Internet-distributed hardware-in-the-loop (IDHIL) simulation integrates HIL setups between geographically dispersed engineering teams and fosters concurrent systems testing early in the design process. The question naturally arises: what is the cost in fidelity incurred by distributing the simulation across Internet links? The degree to which an Internet-distributed simulation loses fidelity relative to a single-location HIL setup is referred to as distortion in this paper. Various factors affect distortion, including the Internet's delay, jitter, and loss, as studied extensively in the literature. Additional considerations, however, such as the coupling points, i.e., the particular points at which the system model shall be divided to enable distribution across the Internet, also affect distortion. The aim of this paper is to turn coupling point selection into a design decision that can be used to minimize distortion. To quantify distortion, a frequency-domain metric is proposed using a linear systems framework. This metric is then used to analyze how the choice of the coupling point affects distortion, and it is also linked to a sensitivity function, which is easier to interpret physically. This analysis can be used in an ID-HIL setup to pick a coupling point that gives minimal distortion, and is the first step towards analyzing the trade-off between stability robustness and transparency in an ID-HIL system. © 2011 AACC American Automatic Control Council.

Aiming at the problems that the construction process of distributed hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) system is tedious and inflexible due to the lack of general architecture, and the previous distributed simulation architectures cannot meet the dynamic interactive relationships, a general architecture of distributed HILS supporting dynamic interactive relationships is developed. Based on this architecture, a rapid construction of distributed HILS systems can be carried out. The architecture supports the dynamic change of the data sending and receiving relationships in the distributed simulation. After testing, the architecture can support the real-time advance of distributed HILS in 1 millisecond step and meet the requirement of millisecond delay in data sending and receiving. © 2019 IEEE.

hardware-in-the-loop simulation allows ECUs to be tested in a simulated environment in closed loop. Engines, vehicles, and other components the ECU normally controls are replaced by high-fidelity models executed on a real-time computer system. This paper shows that today's hardware/software technology makes comprehensive and powerful low-cost desktop simulators feasible. It is also shown that it is now possible to use the same tools for hardware-in-the-loop simulation that have been used in the control development. Ship-mounted cranes are widely used in transportation and installation of heavy loads to the seabed. To minimize adverse effect caused by harsh environment, the cranes are equipped with compensation equipment for the motion. When we design the compensation equipment for the cranes, anti-sway control algorithms in the equipment should be included. To test the feasibility of the algorithms effectively at the early design stage, the hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) framework can be used as one of alternatives. The proposed method consists of several components: virtual mechanical system based on multibody system dynamics, virtual actuator and sensor, and hardware controller. In this study, it is applied to an example of the anti-sway control of the crane on an offshore supply vessel (OSV) during the installation operation of a subsea equipment using the proposed HILS framework. Distributed engine control architecture presents a significant increase in complexity over traditional implementations when viewed from the perspective of system simulation and hardware design and test. Even if the overall function of the control scheme remains the same, the hardware implementation can have a significant effect on the overall system performance due to differences in the creation and flow of data between control elements. A hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation system is under development at NASA Glenn Research Center that enables the exploration of these hardware dependent issues. The system is based on, but not limited to, the Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System simulation 40k (C-MAPSS40k). This paper describes the step-by-step conversion from the self-contained baseline model to the hardware in the loop model, and the validation of each step. As the control model hardware fidelity was improved during HIL system develop- ment, benchmarking simulations were performed to verify that engine system performance characteristics remained the same. The results demonstrate the goal of the effort;the new HIL configurations have similar functionality and performance compared to the baseline C-MAPSS40k system. © 2016, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc. For some years now, studies have proved the feasibility and the interest of providing simulation solutions on the functional and detailed I&C specifications of nuclear units. This is a first step to detect design errors upstream of I&C engineering process. Indeed, the rupture in the design process between detailed specifications and final programmed or wired I&C systems (different tools and different people/staffs are involved for these activities) increases the risk of errors detected late, during on-site requalification tests. Generally, platform tests are performed to verify the final implementation of I&C, but they are often limited to logical functions and performed in open-loop. For several years, EDF Research and Development has been working jointly with EDF engineering units to add I&C closed-loop verifications in design process, especially by studying Model-In-the-loop (MIL) and hardware-In-the-loop (HIL) simulations. In HIL simulation, an I&C platform is connected to a numeric model that simulates the plant dynamic behavior. The advantage to connect control system to a process model is that exchanged data, namely process and I&C data are more realistic and have a functional meaning. It presents a real interest to have physical feedbacks (for example water level or pressure in a circuit) for the verification of analog controls. Furthermore, the use of real programmed I&C systems allow to perform more realistic tests by taking into account the hardware characteristics of the platform (filtering time, delays, etc.). This approach ultimately increases confidence level in engineering studies before on-site tests and earn time and money by detecting problems during platform tests. The paper details the approach adopted by EDF R & D for the implementation of HIL simulation (in terms of tools, testing platforms), and will present its application on a concrete case study of an analog regulation modification, on 1300MW French Nuclear Power Plants. © 2018 Westinghous

Demonstration of LFMCW radar system by hardware-in-the-loop simulation based on tunable microwave photonics generated radar signal and electric receiving link is presented. The seed signal is given by Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) with tunable signal wave forms, which can afford the system with different time-width and bandwidth. The microwave photonics electro-optic modulation and photoelectric transformation system turns the seed signal with low-frequency and narrow-bandwidth into the signal by 4 times at frequency carried on the laser through the dualparallel electro-optic modulator, and obtain the high-frequency and broadband radar signal after the photoelectric detector, and then transmit the radar signal into the input port of the hardware-in-The-loop simulator with time delay function. The radar signal is set as different delay corresponding to different transmission distance, such as 1km, 2km, and other distances. After the hardware-in-The-loop simulator with some distance delay, the signal is transmitted from the output ort of the hardware-in-The-loop simulator into the receiver. In the receiving link, the electric de-chirping method is carried out to down convert the radar echo signal. After electric ADC, the ranging data is processed. Two typical wave forms, such as the wave form with 1GHz bandwidth and 2ms pulse width, and the other wave form with 2GHz bandwidth and 8ms are operated through the system respectively. The demonstration by hardware-in-the-loop simulation has been given, and the experimental results show that the range of frequency modulated continuous wave radar based on this system can reach 5 km. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. This paper studies hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) based PV grid-connected inverter system. The MATLAB / Simulink is used to build the model of photovoltaic grid-connected inverter system. The adapter boards are connected to the inverter's physical control board to build a hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform and perform corresponding functional test, that is an MPPT static performance test of PV source. Through the test, the performance is analyzed and the result deviation in the hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform is less than 0.1%. What's more, the experiment is not restricted by the power performance and weak light in the actual environment. Thus the development process can be greatly improved. © 2020 IEEE.

In this paper, a new method of the hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation test of aircraft guidance, navigation and control (GNC) system is proposed based on cable-driven parallel robot and triaxial turntable. The traditional HWIL simulation test methods of the aircraft GNC system, which depends on the five axes motion platform or the six-degree-of-freedom motion system, have a series of problems such as expensive and complex test equipment, single test mode, and monotonous simulation trajectory. Aiming at the needs of teaching and scientific research, this paper proposes a low-cost and efficient HWIL simulation test scheme for GNC system. Validating control units with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulators is an established method for quality enhancements in automotive software. It is primarily used for testing applications, but in view of increased networking between electronic control units, it can also be used for testing communication scenarios. The testing of electronic control unit (ECU) communication often includes only positive testing. Simple communication nodes are used for this, and communication analyzers are used for verifying communication up to the physical level. However, it is not only an ECU's positive communication behavior that has to be tested, but also its correct behavior in the event of communication errors. In HIL communication scenarios, it is not only possible to emulate the missing bus nodes (restbus simulation) with a link to real-time signals;correct ECU behavior in the event of communication errors can also be tested. This requires the ability not only to mimic errors in bus communication by means of simulated nodes, but also to insert errors into communication with real ECUs that are actually present. This paper describes the challenges and solutions to bus communication testing and simulation during hardware-in-the-loop testing, using the CAN bus (Controller Area Network) as an example. © 2008 SAE International.
