In order to cooperate with algorithm debugging and internal field testing of an imaging system, a front-end simulator was designed to provide excitation signals for a multi aperture imaging system. Visual simulation technology was utilized to simulate the functionality of the front-end of the imaging system. The dual channel FC cards was employed to simulate the communication between the front-end and ICP. The communication efficiency between front-end and ICP, multichannel image alignment algorithm, object detection algorithm, and error response of the system were tested by the simulator in the hardware in loop mode. © 2024 SPIE.

The path loss contribution in a modern telecommunications system is particularly critical due to the higher frequencies employed. However, this can be mitigated by improving the antenna section gain. Adaptive beam steering systems are an enabling technology to seek for this objective, by focusing the antenna pattern towards a given position in the space. In this work, we propose a novel architecture for adaptive beam steering. The phase shift is introduced in the Local Oscillator (LO) path thanks to a modified DDS-PLL structure. The adaptiveness is realized through the Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) estimation of a pilot tone signal. The proposed approach is validated through a simulation campaign involving hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulations. © 2024 IEEE.

A novel multi-cost function model-based finite-set predictive control method is presented for grid-side converters equipped with LCL filters. This approach aims to overcome the tedious tuning of weighting factors. In the method, the cost functions are established based on various state variables and their references. Then the control options are ranked based on their performance in each of the cost functions. This ranking score determines the selection of the optimal control action. The control method is validated in a low-cost custom hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment using model-based rapid-prototyping tools of Matlab/Simulink. simulation and measurement results show the viability of the method. © VDE VERLAG GMBH · Berlin · Offenbach.

This paper presents a novel anomaly detection methodology termed Statistical Aggregated Anomaly Detection (SAAD). The SAAD approach integrates advanced statistical techniques with machine learning, and its efficacy is demonstrated through validation on real sensor data from a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment within the automotive domain, where physical components of the vehicle are interfaced with simulation models. The HIL setup provides a controlled, real-time testing framework that replicates actual driving conditions, allowing for the validation of the vehicle's control systems under various operational scenarios without the need for a physical vehicle prototype. The key innovation of SAAD lies in its ability to significantly enhance the accuracy and robustness of anomaly detection when combined with Fully Connected Networks (FCNs) augmented by dropout layers. Comprehensive experimental evaluations indicate that the standalone statistical method achieves an accuracy of 72.1%, whereas the deep learning model alone attains an accuracy of 71.5%. In contrast, the aggregated method achieves a superior accuracy of 88.3% and an F1 score of 0.921, thereby outperforming the individual models. These results underscore the effectiveness of SAAD, demonstrating its potential for broad application in various domains, including automotive systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Integration of DC microgrids with the AC leads to second order fluctuations in the DC bus voltage and source currents. The virtual impedance schemes are used to mitigate the ripples without increasing the passive component count. However, the virtual schemes leads to degradation of the dynamic performance of the microgrid. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis is presented for the virtual resistance, band-pass feedback and notch feedback based virtual impedance schemes with implementations in DC microgrid. The transfer functions of output voltage of a node to the desired voltage reference is derived, which is further extended to derive overall microgrid dynamics. A four node buck converter based DC microgrid with DC and AC loads is designed and the VIC schemes are implemented to validate the dynamics in different operating modes. The analysis presented is verified through simulation and hardware in loop validations. © 2024 IEEE.

Modern vehicles are now equipped with the lane detection, a critical safety feature that alerts drivers when their vehicle veers off the road [1]. ResNet-18 excels in lane detection, leveraging a 18-layer architecture with residual learning to overcome gradient challenges in deep networks. It plays a crucial role in driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles by accurately identifying and marking lanes on roads. The network’s depth and hierarchical feature learning empower it to distinguish subtle lane markings from surrounding elements in complex road scenes. Here the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation is used for testing and validation, the LDWS system, integrated with a lane detection deep learning framework and Nvidia Jetson Xavier AGX, can be evaluated across diverse conditions, including varied road geometries, climatic scenarios, and traffic patterns. This approach provides a realistic and reliable platform for comprehensive testing in a virtual environment, facilitated dSPACE Scalexio. Our algorithm achieved an accuracy of 94% at daylight and an accuracy of 81% at night [2]. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

In the context of grid-connected power electronic devices, particularly power conversion systems (PCS), traditional bilateral reactive power perturbation techniques are plagued by challenges associated with unpredictable detection times and pronounced detrimental effects on power quality. Meanwhile, unilateral reactive power perturbation methods encounter similar difficulties in effectively managing detection durations. This paper, taking into account the operational conditions both preceding and following the occurrence of islanding, conducts a thorough analysis of the fundamental principles of reactive power perturbation. It subsequently establishes an approximate linear correlation between reactive power perturbation and the frequency at the point of common coupling (PCC) subsequent to islanding. Building upon this analysis, the paper introduces the design rationale for a dual-Trigger mechanism for reactive power perturbations, which integrates the strengths of both perturbation methodologies. Consequently, a novel hybrid reactive power perturbation-based islanding detection method, conditioned upon these dual triggers, is proposed. Through comprehensive hardware-in-The-loop (HIL) simulations, the results conclusively demonstrate that this method exhibits minimal disruption to output power quality, exhibits robust adaptability to grid frequency fluctuations, effectively eliminates detection blind zones, and ensures precise control over the timing of islanding detection. © 2024 IEEE.

Air bearings have long served as a cornerstone in the development, testing, and validation of attitude control systems (ACS). Utilizing such test platforms presents a balance between pure analytical and software evaluations of attitude determination and control algorithms versus the integration of hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) and software-in-the-loop simulation (SILS) alongside an air bearing test setup. Past experiences [1], [5-7] show that these test platforms often unearth errors not always detectable in purely software-based verification environments, particularly evident in novel missions, processes, or personnel unfamiliar with established verification tools and strategies. Detecting critical software or algorithmic flaws pre-launch can significantly impact mission success. This paper provides an overview of the testbed and details the development of the NanoSat testbed, including its general setup and findings regarding disturbance torques. Furthermore, it explains the autocalibration of the CoG using a model-based approach and presents corresponding test results. © 2025 The Authors.

Direct current grid-based doubly-fed induction generator wind turbines: Real-time control and stability analysis

Commonly, a simple topology consisting of a single diode-rectifier and pulse-width-modulation (PWM) converter is used for the connection of the doubly-fed induction generator-based wind turbines (DFIG-WTs) to the DC grid, in which the rotor-side converter (RSC) and the stator diode-rectifier are linked to the common DC bus. But, this topology suffers from less flexibility due to the requirement of matching the stator nominal voltage with the DC grid. Hence, in this paper, a buck converter is added to the DFIG-WT topology and two methods are proposed to control the power converters, where in the first one, the RSC regulates the active power and stator flux linkage, and in the second one, the RSC regulates the DC bus voltage and stator flux linkage. Then, the small-signal stability and the performance of the DFIG-WT system with the mentioned control strategies are compared analytically and through the off-line simulations. At last, a real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulation-based OPAL-RT is carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed control methods from a practical perspective.

This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the HVDC system's impact on distance protection via systematic and realistic experimental tests, along with theoretical analysis of the root causes of the identified compromised protection performance. A methodology for quantifying the impact of Synchronous Compensation (SC) in supporting the distance protection operation is also established. In this work, the performance of two widely used physical distance protection relays have been evaluated using a realistic hardware'In'the'loop (HIL) testing environment, where a total of 480 cases have been tested under a wide range of system scenarios. Representative cases with compromised protection performance are selected, where issues of under/over'reach, faulted phase selection and impedance measurement are identified and analysed. Furthermore, a method for quantifying the required SC level to address the under/over'reach issues resulting from HVDC systems is presented. The method establishes the relationship between the angle difference of the two'end fault current infeeds of the protected line and the SC level. Based on this relationship, the required SC capacity to constrain the angle difference within a targeted limit can be estimated, which offers a useful tool for system operators to appropriately size the SC's capacity with additional valuable insights from the distance protection perspective.
