This article assesses transformer differential protection and out-of-step blocking (OOSB) schemes during blackstart in Dominion Energy’s system. The protective functions are validated by hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations involving the relay hardware with the configurations deployed on the field. Additionally, we introduce a systematic methodology to generate OOSB testing scenarios based on the analytic linearization of the system dynamical model. Our results show that both protective functions perform satisfactorily despite the weak grid condition of the network during restoration.

This paper presents an advanced out-of-step (OOS) splitting protection simulation platform considering high frequency generation tripping and low frequency load shedding. In the proposed simulation platform, Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) is utilized as the real-time power system simulator. Through the high-speed I/O card, real industry OOS splitting protection device is integrated into the proposed simulation platform. Based on the real China South Power Grid (CSG) control strategy, high frequency generation tripping and low frequency load shedding components are modelled in the simulation. CSG real grid is modelled in the RTDS to perform the Real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation. simulation results present that there is a clear difference between with high frequency generation tripping results and without high frequency generation tripping results.

This paper develops a novel intrusion detection system for power distribution systems that utilizes cyber-physical real-time reference model to accurately replicate the complex behavior of power distribution components for attack detection. The proposed intrusion detection system analyzes the consistency of the physical data from sensor readings and control commands in contrast with their digital counterpart obtained from the real-time reference model. Therefore, a residual-based online attack detection mechanism that utilizes the chi-square test is able to determine the presence of malicious data. The proposed mechanism is implemented on a hardware-in-the-loop simulation testbed on a test power distribution system with distributed energy resources and energy storage systems. The results show that the proposed solution is able to quickly detect multiple types of cyber attacks for different levels of accuracy of the real-time reference model. The simulations illustrate that the proposed approach outperforms conventional attack detection mechanisms such as one-class classifiers and residual-based approaches that utilize Kalman filters or neural networks.

The Navigation, Guidance, and Control (NGC) Department at Sandia National Laboratories needed a sustainable replacement for a difficult-to-maintain home-grown hardware-in-the-loop simulation visualization tool for spin-stabilized and thrust vector controlled (TVC) rocket system projects. Created and maintained by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), SIMDIS, or simulation analysis and Display), has the capability to display, both as a playback and in real-time, the simulation output of HWIL simulations. Although the playback of simulation data is mostly out-of-the box, real-time display required a custom plugin to be developed and several plugin data flow configurations were explored and the configuration that produced the best results found. Displaying both HWIL simulation truth data and navigational telemetry data side-by-side is possible, and by leveraging SIMDIS display capabilities such as these, the NGC Department has accelerated the flight software development, debugging, and verification and validation (V&V) processes. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

DC microgrids are suitable for a local area power system which includes dc output distributed generations, batteries and dc loads. In this paper, we propose an analysis method for a dc microgrid using hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS). In this case, a fast response bidirectional dc voltage source is essential for high accuracy analysis. We developed the bidirectional dc source, and installed it to a small scale experimental system of dc microgrid with a real-time simulator. The experimental results showed the validity of the proposed analysis method under some simple cases. © 2012 IEEE.

In the past, the use of computer simulations and real experiments were separated from each other when developing electromechanical components or systems. However, using a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) approach, the two processes can be combined and exhibit a great increase in efficiency. Therefore, the search for hardware-in-the-loop simulation of any system requires the establishment of appropriate mathematical and simulation models for the digital part of the system. With this in mind, this article conducts a detailed HIL simulation on the means implemented and performance obtained in different operating scenarios to test, analyze, and validate a linear PID corrector for the nanosatellite reaction wheel used in the attitude control subsystem.

This paper presents an interleaved bidirectional buck-boost DC/DC converter (IBBBC) developed for charging and discharging high voltage battery energy storage system. The IBBBC is part of a hybrid photovoltaic-battery system and connects to the DC bus of a single-phase hybrid inverter. The adoption of an interleaved topology helps reduce current and voltage ripple, which can enhance converter’s performance and efficiency. This benefit reduces costs, as well as the size and weight of the converter. MATLAB/Simulink and hardware-inthe-loop (HiL) simulations were used to simulate the control performances of IBBBC in both on-grid and off-grid scenarios. In addition, the prototype of single-phase hybrid inverter with IBBBC was implemented in the laboratory. The experimental results revealed that the control responses of charge and discharge processes, during on-grid and off-grid operations, are similar to the simulation results.

Active rectifiers are commonly used converters in interfacing AC and DC grids due to their bidirectional power flow capabilities. Nowadays the development workflow of power converters includes real-time simulation steps to validate control concepts with hardware implementation in a safe environment. The paper presents the development process of a real-time HIL simulation framework for rapid-prototyping of advanced control algorithms of an Active-Front-End (AFE) rectifier. The control concepts and the main circuit models are realized in Matlab/Simulink and fitted for code-generation.

On-board chargers in electric vehicles often include a totem-pole PFC, as this compact active rectifier provides bidirectional energy flow and can be easily adapted to single-phase or three-phase grid operation. To test its control unit in terms of HIL simulations, a real-time capable model of the topology is required. This paper deals with the modeling and realization of a universal real-time model for versatile totem-pole configurations in single-phase or three-phase grid operation. The proposed model uses the ideal switch representation. An extended approach to detect switch-state changes caused by Dirac impulses is introduced. Additional focus is placed on the implementation of the final model on an FPGA. simulation results prove the validity of the proposed model.

hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation technique provides a solution to perform tests without risking damage to Line-Replaceable-Unit (LRU) and reduce costs via increasing the speed of continuous verification and validation. As an important part of verification and validation phase of a system, the hardware-in-the-loop simulation is one of the most effective techniques for an LRU system testing and makes a substantial contribution in avionics model integration process and realization of the system. Based on the hardware-in-the-loop simulation method, this paper designs the structure and parameters of a hardware-in-the-loop simulation test system for an indigenous flight control computer system test. This test system comprises of plant models, signal generation module, data acquisition module, record module, switching module for signal loss and error injection scenarios, and a graphical user interface. Test system includes a Peripheral Component Interconnect Extension for Instrumentation (PXI) chassis with a real-time operating system, hardware capable of converting the digital signals generated by an aircraft model into analog signals proper to LRU input signals and transmitting to LRU, also hardware capable of converting the digital signals generated by the flight control computer into analog signals to the control model and, moreover a recording unit in which all these signals are logged in parallel with data acquisition process.
