China’s heavy haul trains are moving towards the trend of large marshalling and long marshalling. In this case, if the small marshalling train can be embedded into the software environment by using the computer interface, the software and hardware of the system are required to run in real time, so as to simulate the running state of the whole system. Using the small marshalling train and cascade control scheme, the running state of the long marshalling train is simulated on the semi-physical simulation platform, which has important guiding significance for the development of heavy haul trains. Based on the LabVIEW simulation software, this paper develops a hardware-in-the-loop simulation test platform for the braking system of 150 marshalling freight trains. It has the function of combining the small marshalling physical braking system with the control system model, obtaining the braking performance test data of long and large marshalling trains through the cyclic cascade experiment, and controlling the error between the real experimental results and the experimental results of the hardware-in-the-loop simulation within a reasonable range.

The paper presents a data-driven control design for a steering system, which is based on variable-geometry suspension. The proposed control system into a hierarchical structure with different roles on each layer is ordered, i.e., low-level and high-level controls are designed. The low-level controller is responsible for the realization of the steering angle, while the high-level controller guarantees the trajectory tracking of the vehicle. The low-level controller based on a polytopic model is designed, which model structure through a data-driven identification approach is carried out. The effectiveness and the operation of the hierarchical control structure through a hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation are demonstrated. In the HiL simulation environment, the lateral dynamics of the vehicle by the CarMaker software is modeled, and the motion of the variable-geometry suspension through a testbed is realized.

The SHAKTI pilot is a demonstrator of the IElectrix H2020 project located in Delhi, India. A microgrid solution devoted for an energy community managed by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has been developed and will be set up soon on site. This paper proposes a hardware In the loop simulation (HIL) approach to test and validate the microgrid control system following the IEEE 2030.8 standard. The result of the extensive testing by using the HIL environment will allow validating the robustness of the microgrid solution against transient events on the grid before the implementation of the solution.

The hardware-in-the-loop simulation on the Control System of a Small Launch Vehicle

The hardware-in-the-loop simulation plays an important role in aerocraft design. In hardware-in-the-loop simulation on launch vehicle, some hardware components are connected to the simulation loop and then work driven by data from the running computer which yield different operand quantities in different coordinate frames. According to the analysis on characteristic of the ballistics in the inertial launch reference frame, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation system for a small launch vehicle containing IMU, rocket-borne computer and rudder is established. simulation results indicate the control scheme is accurate, the algorithm of navigation, guidance and attitude control are valid, and the calculation reduction quantity benefited from using the data in the inertial launch reference frame rather than in launch reference is worked out.

Nonlinear semi-active adaptive vibration control of a half vehicle model under unmeasured road input

This study examined automobile vibrations by using a half vehicle model, and its vertical and angular vibrations were suppressed by means of the nonlinear adaptive control of a magneto-rheological damper. The control method was designed in such a way that it did not need to measure the road input to suppress the vibrations by the use of adaptive road observers. Therefore, disadvantages such as measurement difficulty and cost were also eliminated. Instead of completely experimental test rigs, the hardware-in-the-loop simulation which is a hybrid method was preferred due to it being easier to set up, cheaper, and also it had a close response to the full experimental system. The experimental responses obtained by the proposed adaptive control method with adaptive road observers and the nonlinear adaptive control method in which the road disturbances were measured were compared in the time and frequency domains. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method was shown using some figures, root mean square values, and performance indices.

Design of Real-Time hardware-in-the-loop TV Guidance System simulation Platform

This paper presents a novel design of a real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) missile TV guidance system simulation platform, which consists of a development computer, a target computer, a turntable, a control cabin, and a joystick. The guidance system simulation model is created on the development computer by Simulink (R) and then downloaded to the target computer. Afterwards, Simulink Real-Time (TM) runs the model in real-time. Meanwhile, the target computer uploads the real-time simulation data back to the development computer. The hardware in the simulation loop is TV camera, encoders, control cabin, servomotors, and target simulator. In terms of hardware and software, the system has been simplified compared with the existing works. The volume of the turntable integrating the target simulator and the seeker simulator is about 0.036 cubic meters compared to the original 8 cubic meters, so it has a compact structure. The platform can perform the closed-loop control, so the simulation has high precision. Taking the TV guidance simulation as an example, in the case of target maneuvering, the final miss distance of the TV guidance missile is 0.11812 m, while the miss distance of the original systemis 13m. The trajectories obtained from the HIL and mathematical simulations substantially coincide. So the simulation results show that the proposed HIL simulation platform is effective.

Power electronic converters are essential components in the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powertrain, which precisely control the power output of the fuel cell stack, the charging and discharging process of the battery, and the operation of the traction motor. The hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation plays an important role in the rapid validation of power converters in their early development stages. In this study, a device-level model of the power converters in FCEV powertrain is developed for the FPGA-based real-time simulation. By fulfilling the circuit topology partitioning and the switch model partitioning, the FCEV power electronic system can be simulated with sub-microsecond time-step while producing the detailed switching waveforms with 5 ns resolution. Therefore, the device electrical stress, and the switching power losses can be evaluated in real time. Furthermore, the electro-thermal converter model is developed accordingly, which makes it possible to evaluate the IGBT/Diode thermal behaviour in the HIL simulation. In this study, the FPGA hardware is designed with the NI LABVIEW FPGA module and implemented on the NI-7975R FLEXRIO FPGA board. The accuracy of the FPGA-based simulation results is evaluated by the results from offline simulation tools. The effectiveness of the proposed model is then validated by the controller HIL experiments.

Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)-based HVDC power transmission using a real-time simulator is one of the key technologies in power electronics research. This paper introduces the design methodology of a physical MMC-HVDC control system based on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which has the advantage of high-speed parallel operation, and validates the accuracy of MMC-HVDC control when operated with a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). Finally, this paper compares and analyzes the characteristics of capacitor voltage balancing methods such as Nearest Level Control (NLC), NLC with a reduced switching frequency, and tolerance band modulation implemented on physical control system.

Lateral jet and grid fin combined control is a new attitude control method, and has advantage in reducing aerocraft weight and improving control efficiency. For checking the control capability and control method optimization, hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) system should be established. Attitude stability of aerocraft and propellant consumption of lateral jet system can be analyzed based on the simulation data, then the engineers may evaluate the performance of combined control method. hardware-in-the-loop simulation system of aerocraft control based on dSPACE is established in this paper, has real-time simulation capability that complicated model calculating needs, and solves the problems of high data communication and rapid development of simulation system in HILS. This paper introduces the hardware architecture and key technologies of the simulation system. Ground simulation of aerocraft attitude is realized with communication between DS4201s card and turn table, feedback voltage acquisition of two actuating mechanism and A/D conversion is solved using DS2002 card, the control algorithm is downloaded to DSP processor in the onboard computer using the RTW tool. Single instrument tests and interaction between two instruments are finished. Testing results of the hardware indicate that communication and signal transferring are proper. Attitude simulation is realized with serial-port communication between dSPACE and turn table, interference in A/D acquisition channel is reduced by adding filtering module in DS2002. Attitude control in the ascending phase of aerocraft is simulated under the HILS environment. Actuator deflection and on-off status of lateral jet system are derived by analyzing HILS results. We can examine and certify the control capability of lateral jet and grid fin combined control method and optimize the control algorithm.

The hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation is an effective method to verify the overall function of the flexible HVDC transmission control and protection device. With this method, debugging the control and protection device can make the system run safely and stably after being put into operation. Therefore, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform modular multilevel converter (MMC) based on RT-LAB is established in this paper. Data merging between a converter valve control system and the real-time simulator is realized by high-speed optical fiber communication protocol conversion chassis, and the high-speed communication interface is designed to meet the requirements of the communication rate. Aiming at the control performance of the physical device, the test scheme is designed, and the test methods of voltage balance control and circulating current suppression are proposed. The closed-loop test of control and protection device is carried out by the active power step and AC/DC fault test. The above test verifies the validity of the HIL simulation platform of the MMC and the rationality of the testing scheme, and can meet the performance testing requirements of the control and protection device. © IEEE 2021.
