This paper presents an in-depth exploration of an advanced transformer differential protection system that utilizes the MiCOM-P645 relay and the IEC 61850 Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event ( GOOSE) communication protocol. Transformer protection is of paramount importance in ensuring the reliable and stable operation of power systems. The integration of these cutting-edge technologies enhances the coordination and fault detection capabilities of transformer protection systems, ultimately improving the reliability and performance of power distribution networks. The study's primary goal is to demonstrate the scheme's effectiveness, improving both the reliability and performance of transformer protection. To aid postgraduate students in comprehending the setup and operational principles of the system, the paper presents a comprehensive approach encompassing theoretical analysis, an extensive literature review, and practical results obtained from simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and real-time simulation using the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). Simulation results validate the success of MiCOM-P645 relay-based differential protection with IEC 61850, highlighting its faster response compared to traditional hardwired signals during real-time testing.

The Image Stabilization Testbed (ISTAT) is a high-bandwidth angular motion system for the simulation of missile dynamics with capability beyond that of current flight motion simulators (FMS). This paper describes the development and initial laboratory integration of the ISTAT. The intention is to mount a missile seeker and any associated inertial measurement sensors, and then allow ISTAT to replicate the dynamic boundary conditions at the base of the seeker resulting from both airframe vibrations (flexible body motion) as well as rigid body motion resulting from vehicle control forces or the flight environment. ISTAT will be driven by the output of deterministic simulations and will replicate the time history of the command signals. It can be used in a standalone mode or possibly in conjunction with a conventional large motion lower bandwidth FMS. ISTAT makes use of high bandwidth hydraulic actuation and advanced feedback and feedforward control algorithms to deliver two- and three-axis motion control at frequencies from DC to greater than 500 Hz. The largest motions, achieved at lower frequencies, are about two degrees. The paper describes the motivation, the servohydraulic, mechanical, and electronic subsystems, control software and algorithms, and the software user interface for the testbed. An initial report on the system integration is also provided.

The test procedure of electrical drives for Distributed Generation (DG) systems generally requires the installation of dedicated prototypes on site: this is an expensive, time and power consuming procedure. In recent years, the availability of high performance calculation platforms have made possible to perform these tests using hardware in the loop (HIL) test benches before the plant installation. A HIL environment allows reducing costs and saving time because an implementation error can be easily identified and it is possible to test fault conditions in a safety way. This paper presents a general HIL test bench for DG electrical drive testing. Experimental results emulating different DG sources and plant have been provided to validate the approach.

In this paper, a concept of Avionics Simulator is described. This simulator consists of six subsystems, which are a large scale flight table (LFT), a small but high precision flight table (HFT), a target simulator (TS), a central processing system (CPS), a central console (CC) an a large anechoic chamber. The LFT physically simulates an own-ship motion (roll-pitch yaw) and a Fire Control Radar (FCR) and an Inertia Reference System (IRS) are installed into the inner roll gimbal of the LFT. The HFT is used for test and evaluation of the IRS. The TS consists of a billboard array antenna and a target generator. This TS can simultaneously generate two targets under the sea clutter or the ground clutter and radiate RF target-echo signals from the billboard array antenna to the FCR. The CC can realtimely simulate a relative motion (6-degree-of-freedom) between own-ship and multi-targets and transfer an own-ship motion command to the LFT and also each relative range and velocity command to the target generator. The CC consists of an operational console, target and outer scene image generator and a projection screen (100 inches). Avionics Simulator can do hardware-in-the-loop testing of the FCR and the IRS under synthetic environments preceding actual in-flight testing.

The aim of this paper is to present a communication network emulator based hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real time test bench. The emulator is used together with Opal-RT simulator to build up the test bench for testing of power system protection applications. The emulator enables us to model and vary new network properties and communication services that can have effect on protection system applications. With the aid of power system protection testing based on IEC 61850, this paper demonstrates how this test bench can be set up. Case studies of how the network emulator can be used to model communication properties and how it has satisfactory performance comparable to practical network switches are presented and discussed. In addition, the flexibility and capabilities of the emulator switch on implementation of router functions for management and control to support IEC 61850 Ethernet network communication have been examined.

In recent years, the model predictive control (MPC) has become a powerful control technique capable of dealing with nonlinearities of complex and non-complex systems. This paper presents the implementation of a Dynamic Matrix Control algorithm applied to a single-phase photovoltaic inverter for its application in isolated areas. The proposed algorithm is evaluated in Matlab/Simulink for reference signal tracking and disturbance rejection. The experimental validation is performed at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro through hardware-in-the-loop testing, using a Typhoon HIL402 real-time emulator machine and a dSPACE DS1103 controller board. The results show that this control algorithm is robust to load variations and has a fast response to reference change and disturbance rejection.

An intelligent controller is developed based on machine learning algorithm incorporated into predictive control strategy. The model of interest is trained during transfer learning process utilizing measurement dataset. The introduced control scheme provides an optimal load dispatching among distributed energy resources (DERs) interconnected with a benchmarked Electric Vehicle (EV) battery charger. The proposed scheme offers an easy realization on various embedded hardware systems independently. In this study, a few operational conditions of an exemplary charging station are examined via hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing. The findings are then compared to the classical finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) which has been widely used in recent studies. Several operation scenarios have been evaluated and the obtained results are paving the way for future solutions addressing the concern of utilities pertaining to DERs load management for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies.

Various technologies have been used to achieve IR dynamic scene simulation for evaluation, testing and training for infrared imaging scene sensors. One of the most promising technologies is the use of arrays of resistively heated plates. This technology comes closest to matching the broadband IR spectra of scenes of interest to the IR sensor community. Recent advances in electronics fabrication techniques and especially in the micro-machining of silicon, are enabling arrays to be built with high pixel densities, low power requirements and reasonable cost. Characterization of these arrays is necessary to verify design models and assess process control and feasibility for applications. Reported here are measurements made on three pixel structure designs: bridge resistor, suspended membrane resistor, and post mounted membrane resistor The bridge resistor and the suspended membrane resistor designs are prototypes;the post mounted membrane resistor is an experimental design. Measurements reported include: near field radiance distributions over the pixel areas with calculated effective fill factors, and rise and fall times in a 4-5.5 mu m band;and near field and temperature measurements in the 8-12 mu m band.

The PWM-controlled Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) are commonly used in industrial and utility applications. In spite of superior features of fast voltage regulation and stable DC-link voltage, PWM-controlled VSCs have the major drawback of being sensitive to the grid disturbances especially the unbalanced conditions and system faults. Unbalanced input voltage generates large negative sequence current flow into the converter which results in oscillations with twice the line frequency on the DC-link voltage. This negative sequence current flow might damage the semiconductor switches. Beside the negative sequence voltage, the input voltage distorted with other harmonics also causes converter performance deterioration by producing harmonics on the DC-link voltage. This paper presents an alternative solution to improve the PWM-controlled VSC performance under unbalanced conditions and system faults and also under distorted input voltage condition caused by other harmonics rather than the negative sequence voltage. This solution is based on direct calculation of the negative sequence (or other harmonics) reference voltage without using any current regulator. This elimination of the current regulator makes the proposed controller very fast and robust. The effectiveness of this solution has been validated by simulation and hardware-In-the-loop test.

This paper describes Quanser's Mobile Robot Control Framework (QMRCF) for an educational robot called Qbot. The QMRCF accelerates the development of mobile robot control algorithms and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing using model-based design techniques of MATLAB Simulink. This paper also validates the performance of QMRCF using several experiments in various research fields of mobile robotics, e.g., teleoperation, navigation, and obstacle avoidance.
