Most of the real-time control systems at the existing ESO telescopes were developed with "traditional" methods, using general purpose VMEbus electronics, and running applications that were coded by hand, mostly using the C programming language under VxWorks. As we are moving towards more modern design methods, we have explored a model-based design approach for real-time applications in the telescope area, and used the control algorithm of a standard telescope main axis as a first example. We wanted to have a clear work-flow that follows the "correct-by-construction" paradigm, where the implementation is testable in simulation on the development host, and where the testing time spent by debugging on target is minimized. It should respect the domains of control, electronics, and software engineers in the choice of tools. It should be a target-independent approach so that the result could be deployed on various platforms. We have selected the Mathworks tools Simulink, Stateflow, and Embedded Coder for design and implementation, and LabVIEW with NI hardware for hardware-in-the-loop testing, all of which are widely used in industry. We describe how these tools have been used in order to model, simulate, and test the application. We also evaluate the benefits of this approach compared to the traditional method with respect to testing effort and maintainability. For a specific axis controller application we have successfully integrated the result into the legacy platform of the existing VLT software, as well as demonstrated how to use the same design for a new development with a completely different environment.

This paper delves into the practical application of transactive energy markets within community microgrids, making use of an innovative openADR-based microgrid emulator for thorough testing and validation. The emulator serves as a crucial conduit between theoretical concepts and real-world deployment, faithfully emulating the intricate behaviors of microgrids. Four distinct scenarios were meticulously examined: "Surplus Energy Selling,"involving the return of excess energy to the grid;"Prioritized Community Sharing,"which prioritizes local energy consumption within the community;a "Demand Response (DR)"scenario with a 10% load reduction to explore demand-side management potential;and "Energy Auction model using Q-learning,"introducing Q-learning models to optimize energy bidding strategies for efficient distribution within the community. Through rigorous testing in the community microgrid emulator, these scenarios were effectively verified, underscoring the emulator's adaptability and versatility. This unique combination of advanced simulation and hardware-in-loop testing facilitates the exploration of a wide array of energy market strategies and demand-side management techniques, affirming the practical significance and robustness of community microgrid applications in real-world contexts. © 2023 IEEE.

QUBE is a 3U CubeSat that establishes a secure communication link between a satellite and Earth using quantum key exchange. An accurate Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) is a crucial aspect of this mission. To calibrate the sensors and verify the system performance pre-flight, the team at Zentrum für Telematik e.V.(ZfT) has developed a realistic ADCS test environment. This paper describes the development of a test setup for an ADCS designed specifically for CubeSats and Small Sats. The setup is currently being used for the verification of QUBE, which is scheduled to be flight-ready in 2023, as well as subsequent similar CubeSats. Initial results of the sensor calibration and attitude determination verification are presented. The test setup places the CubeSat on a lightweight 3-axis air bearing, where it is observed by an optical tracking system to measure the satellite's attitude. The air bearing is situated within a Helmholtz cage to simulate the magnetic field of Earth. We envision an integration into an external simulation environment, which can interact with the system under test through a wireless interface to provide the option of closed-loop system testing. The optical tracking system is calibrated using a higher resolution system and its results are also presented. The setup will be used for the calibration of the magnetometers on the air bearing, as well as to assess the attitude determination accuracy and target pointing capability. Laboratory validation is an important step in the development of new navigation and estimation algorithms. The laboratory validation process often requires the simulation and/or emulation of vehicles, sensors, and operational environments. At Texas A&M University’s Land, Air, and Space Robotics (LASR) Laboratory, robotics is utilized to provide the necessary motion and sensing capabilities to meet this end. A new robotic platform - the Navigation, Estimation, and Sensing Testbed (NEST) - was developed for the LASR Laboratory to aid the algorithm testing and validation process. NEST combines a suite of sensors, powerful onboard computer, rechargeable battery, and supporting power electronics into a compact, modular chassis. The result is a versatile, reusable vehicle emulation and sensing platform that can be applied to a variety of projects and operated on its own or in conjunction with other robotic platforms and computing units. NEST’s hardware and software are discussed, along with typical utilization within the laboratory.

Fidelity assessment of Real-Time Hybrid Substructuring based on convergence and extrapolation

High quality of products and quick development cycles require reliable verification of the products. An applicable method for component testing is Real-Time Hybrid Substructuring (RTHS), which is a cyber-physical testing method combining numerical simulation and experimental testing. For the broad application of such testing methods, confidence in the test results must be gained. For this purpose, fidelity measures are required to indicate to the user how trustworthy the results are. The fidelity of an RTHS test does not only depend on the amount of errors in the loop, but also on the dynamics of the reference system and the interface locations. Current assessment measures do either not consider these dynamics/partitioning or require a reference solution or need knowledge about the dynamics of all involved components. This work proposes a novel strategy for fidelity assessment that circumvents these shortcomings: Fidelity Assessment based on Convergence and Extrapolation (FACE). The main idea is to deliberately vary the amount of error in the RTHS loop and monitor how this changes the RTHS result. From this relation, system understanding can be gained that is used in a further step to estimate the dynamics of the reference solution (i.e., if there was no error in the loop). The proposed method is applied to two application examples. In the first example, which is a virtual RTHS test of a linear system, the true reference solution is available and the prediction capability of the FACE method is verified. The second example uses data from a real RTHS test. Both examples reveal that the FACE method captures the dynamics influence of an error on the RTHS result and therefore helps the user to decide whether the conducted test was successful. This method can therefore be a valuable tool to assist users in the application of RTHS to a large variety of systems.

Co-Design Optimization and Total Cost of Ownership Analysis of an Electric Bus Depot Microgrid with Photovoltaics and Energy Storage Systems

Due to the increasing share of battery electric buses (BEBs) in cities, depots need to be adapted to the increasing load demand. The integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into a depot can increase the self-consumption, but optimal sizing is required for a cost-efficient and reliable operation. Accordingly, this paper introduces a co-design optimization framework for a depot microgrid, equipped with photovoltaics (PVs) and an energy storage system (ESS). Three European cities are considered to evaluate the effect of different environmental conditions and electricity prices on the optimal microgrid design. Accurate models of the different subsystems are created to estimate the load demand and the power generation. Different energy management strategies (EMSs), developed to properly control the power flow within the microgrid, are compared in terms of operational costs reduction, one of which was also experimentally validated using a hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) test setup. In addition, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the depot microgrid is analyzed, showing that an optimally designed depot microgrid can reduce the charging-related expenses for the public transport operator (PTO) by 30% compared to a scenario in which only the distribution grid supplies the BEB depot.

Extended-Kalman-filter-based equilibrium manifold expansion observer for ramjet nonlinear control

A high-accuracy control-oriented model is an important prerequisite for the design of a ramjet controller, which can provide good engine performance and ensure safe and reliable operation under various environments and working conditions. In this study, we established a control-oriented equilibrium manifold expansion (EME) model for ramjets based on engine operation data. Furthermore, according to the EME model, an uncertainty term was introduced to reflect the steady-state error of the system. Meanwhile, in combination with the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm, an EME observer was developed to eliminate the steady-state error and amend the model. Then, we established a model that can reflect the maneuvering characteristics of a ramjet in a large envelope range. Moreover, a feasible nonlinear controller was designed using the EME model and the sliding mode control (SMC) method to further eliminate the influence of model parameter perturbations and enhance the robustness of the control system. A direct control target was designed to further verify the estimation accuracy of the unmeasurable output of the EKF-based EME observer, and to achieve the direct control of the thrust performance and safety performance of a ramjet. Finally, the results of the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiment showed that the state variable tracking error of the EME + EKF SMC system was reduced by at least 40% under continuous variable Mach number instructions, and the tracking error was reduced by more than 70% under more extreme simulation instructions. The control system was robust, and the accuracy of the model significantly improved. In addition, the results of the HIL experiment showed that a EME + EKF SMC control system with high accuracy and stability was established with thrust and inlet stability margin as control objectives.(c) 2023 Elsevier Masson SAS. Research on an Intelligent Vehicle Trajectory Tracking Method Based on Optimal Control Theory

This study aims to explore an intelligent vehicle trajectory tracking control method based on optimal control theory. Considering the limitations of existing control strategies in dealing with signal delays and communication lags, a control strategy combining an anthropomorphic forward-looking reference path and longitudinal velocity closure is proposed to improve the accuracy and stability of intelligent vehicle trajectory tracking. Firstly, according to the vehicle dynamic error tracking model, a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) transverse controller is designed based on the optimal control principle, and a feedforward control strategy is added to reduce the system steady-state error. Secondly, an anthropomorphic look-ahead prediction model is established to mimic human driving behavior to compensate for the signal lag. The double proportional-integral-derivative (DPID) control algorithm is used to track the longitudinal speed reference value. Finally, a joint simulation is conducted based on MatLab/Simulink2021b and CarSim2019.0 software, and the effectiveness of the control strategy proposed in this paper is verified by constructing a semi-physical experimental platform and carrying out a hardware-in-the-loop test. The simulation and test results show that the control strategy can significantly improve the accuracy and stability of vehicle path tracking, which provides a new idea for future intelligent vehicle control system design.

The major tasks of Battery Management Systems (BMS) are to guaranty safe operation conditions and to maintain every single cell of the hole battery pack. These tasks require measurements and balancing processes for each cell. Modern BMS take advantage of the wealth of information to estimate hardly measurable conditions like State of charge (SoC) or State of Health (SoH). This paper describes a method to estimate the State of Charge for every single cell in a battery pack using an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) running on an electronic control unit of the BMS. The verification of the developed algorithms on the control unit takes a long time on a real battery system. For that purpose a real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) test bench is developed. In this test bench a LiFePO_4 cell model was implemented by Matlab/Simulink. So the developed and embedded algorithm can be verified by means of various test cases. In this paper the results are presented on signal level. Future work will include a HiL test bench on power level together with an cell emulator. Beside this the test bench offers the opportunity to develop models and sophisticated algorithms for further beneficial state variables like the SoH or the inner temperature of each single cell of the battery pack.

The ever growing penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), involving both conventional and renewable technologies, is changing the power system face. International Standards are being revised for including new requirements for DERs such as wider voltage amplitude and frequency protection thresholds and new local P/f and Q/V power regulation. This scenario has led to an increasing concern about the problem of uncontrolled islanding on distribution networks. The purpose of this paper is to describe a hardware in the loop (HIL) test-bed, where the effects of the DER inverter control actions and of the physical interface protection systems (IPSs) on the unintentional islanding can be addressed. The analysis has shown that the frequency measurement under transient conditions is very important, influencing the P/f DER control action and the IPS tripping. Thus, the preliminary results on the HIL test-bed suggest the need of standardization for the frequency measurement. This solution would be of fundamental importance to predict system behavior of distribution network having large DER diffusion and its protection system during unintentional islanding and other transient conditions.
