This paper is concerned with the application of computational intelligence techniques to the conceptual design and development of a large-scale floating settlement. The settlement in question is a design for the area of Urla, which is a rural touristic region located on the west coast of Turkey, near the metropolis of Izmir. The problem at hand includes both engineering and architectural aspects that need to be addressed in a comprehensive manner. We thus adapt the view as a multi-objective constrained real-parameter optimization problem. Specifically, we consider three objectives, which are conflicting. The first one aims at maximizing accessibility of urban functions such as housing and public spaces, as well as special functions, such as a marina for yachts and a yacht club. The second one aims at ensuring the wind protection of the general areas of the settlement, by adequately placing them in between neighboring land masses. The third one aims at maximizing visibility of the settlement from external observation points, so as to maximize the exposure of the settlement. To address this complex multi-objective optimization problem and identify lucrative alternative design solutions, a multi-objective harmony search algorithm (MOHS) is developed and applied in this paper. When compared to the Differential Evolution algorithm developed for the problem in the literature, we demonstrate that MOHS achieves competitive or slightly better performance in terms of hyper volume calculation, and gives promising results when the Pareto front approximation is examined.

Considering the low efficiency and instability of traditional genetic algorithm optimized PID controller, an improved algorithm named harmonysearch genetic algorithm to optimize PID controller's parameters of mechanical arm is proposed in this paper. Using harmony search algorithm in the initial population generation process of genetic algorithm improved the algorithm's performance. harmonysearch genetic algorithm is more suitable to optimize PID controller's parameters than traditional genetic algorithm in six degrees of freedom mechanical arm system. Compared to the traditional control optimization method, as shown in the simulation results, the new kind of optimization method is better in both validity and stability.

To come up with the problem of designing aperiodic linear arrays with multiple constraints, a pattern synthesis technique based on vector mapping and Improved harmonysearch (IHS) algorithm is proposed to reduce the peak side-lobe level (PSLL) of the array. The constraints include the number of elements, the array aperture, and the minimum and the maximum distance between neighboring elements. On the condition that the feasible solution space remains unchangeable, a special vector mapping is applied between the element spacings and the initial variables. Thus, the constrained optimization problem is simply transformed to a non-constrained problem with greater degree of freedom (DoF). Design case found in the literature is simulated to compare the performance of these algorithms. Simulation results reveal the high efficiency, robustness and low computation cost of the proposed method.

In this paper, the problem of automatic data clustering is treated as the searching of optimal number of clusters so that the obtained partitions should be optimized. The automatic data clustering technique utilizes a recently developed parameter adaptive harmonysearch (PAHS) as an underlying optimization strategy. It uses real-coded variable length harmony vector, which is able to detect the number of clusters automatically. The newly developed concepts regarding "threshold setting" and "cutoff" are used to refine the optimization strategy. The assignment of data points to different cluster centers is done based on the newly developed weighted Euclidean distance instead of Euclidean distance. The developed approach is able to detect any type of cluster irrespective of their geometric shape. It is compared with four well-established clustering techniques. It is further applied for automatic segmentation of grayscale and color images, and its performance is compared with other existing techniques. For real-life datasets, statistical analysis is done. The technique shows its effectiveness and the usefulness.

A hybrid technique for solving the congestion management problem in an electricity market based on harmony search algorithm (HAS) and Fuzzy mechanism is presented in this article. This algorithm does not require initial value setting for the variables and does not require differential gradients, thus it can consider discontinuous functions as well as continuous functions. The HAS is a recently developed powerful evolutionary algorithm, inspired by the improvisation process of musicians, for solving single/multiobjective optimization problems. In the proposed technique, each musician plays a note for finding a best harmony all together. Transmission pricing and congestion management are the key elements of a competitive electricity market based on direct access. They also focus of much of the debate concerning alternative approaches to the market design and the implementation of a common carrier electricity system. This article focuses on the tradeoffs between simplicity and economic efficiency in meeting the objectives of a transmission pricing and congestion management scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is applied on 30 and 118 bus IEEE standard power system in comparison with CPSO, PSO-TVAC, and PSO-TVIW. The controller parameters are designed by considering as an optimization with minimization of square error using harmony search algorithm. This paper addresses the nurse rostering problem (NRP), whose objective is to minimize a total penalty caused by the roster. A large number of constraints required to be considered could cause a great difficulty of handling the NRP. A hybrid harmony search algorithm (HHSA) with a greedy local search is proposed to solve the NRP. A personal schedule is divided into several blocks, in which a subset of constraints is considered in advance. Based on these blocks, the pitch adjustment and randomization are carried out. Every time a roster is improvised, a coverage repairing procedure is applied to make the shift constraints satisfied, and the greedy local search is used to improve the roster's quality. The proposed HHAS was tested on many well known real-world problem instances and competitive solutions were obtained.

Helical piles are a manufactured steel foundation composed of one or multiple helix plates affixed to a central shaft. A helical pile is installed by rotating the central shaft with hydraulic torque motors. There are three representative theoretical predictions for the bearing capacity of helical piles: individual bearing method, cylindrical shear method, and torque correlation method. The bearing capacity of helical piles is governed by the helical pile's configuration, geologic conditions and penetration depth. The high variability of influence factors makes an optimum design for helical pile configuration difficult in practice. In this paper, the harmony search algorithm is adopted to minimize the material cost of helical piles by optimizing the components composing a helical pile based on the proposed bearing capacity prediction. The optimization process based on the combined prediction method with the aid of the harmony search algorithm leads to an economical design by saving about 27percent of the helical pile material cost.

In the last four decades, many studies have been conducted for least-cost and maximum-reliability design of water supply systems. Most models employed multi-objective genetic algorithm (e.g., non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II, NSGA-II) in order to explore trade-off relationship between the two objectives. This study proposes a reliability-based design model that minimizes total cost and maximizes seismic reliability. Here, seismic reliability is defined as the ratio of available demand to required water demand under earthquakes. Multi-objective harmony search algorithm (MoHSA) is developed to efficiently search for the Pareto optimal solutions in the two objectives solution space and incorporated in the proposed reliability-based design model. The developed model is applied to a well-known benchmark network and the results are analyzed.
