Optimum design of steel space frames under earthquake effect using harmony search

This paper presents an optimization process using harmony search algorithm for minimum weight of steel space frames under earthquake effects according to Turkish Earthquake Code (2007) specifications. The optimum designs are carried out by selecting suitable sections from a specified list including W profiles taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The stress constraints obeying AISC- Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications, lateral displacement constraints and geometric constraints are considered in the optimum designs. A computer program is coded in MATLAB for the purpose to incorporate with SAP2000 OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface) to perform structural analysis of the frames under earthquake loads. Three different steel space frames are carried out for four different seismic earthquake zones defined in Turkish Earthquake Code (2007). Results obtained from the examples show the applicability and robustness of the method.

Furnace temperature influencing factors are complicated in regenerative aluminum smelting furnace. Traditional modeling ways of neutral networks are complex and their generalization abilities are poor. Therefore, this paper used the method of Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) to extract the main components of networks inputs. KPCA can reduce the relevance of inputs and simplify network structure. The improved extreme learning machine (ELM) is adapted as the prediction model of furnace temperature. ELM improved by harmony search algorithm (HS) can effectively enhance the performance of ELM. In the end, the furnace temperature prediction model was established by KPCA-HS-ELM were compared with the model were established by BP, ELM and HS-ELM. Results show that the prediction model of furnace temperature based on KPCA-HS-ELM has better prediction ability and higher generalization ability. The KPCA-HS-ELM model can provide reference for furnace temperature control.

Power allocation is an important research topic of communication research. In view of the shortcomings of the current power allocation methods in communication networks, such as poor fairness, communication interruption and low frequency, a new power allocation method based on harmony search algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the current research on power allocation in communication is advanced. The mathematical model of communication power allocation is established by line analysis. Then the mathematical model of communication power allocation is solved by harmony search algorithm. Finally, the simulation experiment of communication power allocation is carried out. The experimental results show that under the condition of high SNR, the harmony search algorithm can quickly find the communication power allocation scheme, improve the communication capacity, and greatly reduce the frequency of communication interruption.

In this paper, a hybrid meta-heuristic search algorithm is proposed with the combination of harmony search (HS) algorithm and differential evolution (DE) algorithm, which is named as HS-DE. HS is an optimization method mimicking the music improvisation process where musicians invent their instruments' pitches searching for a perfect state of harmony. DE is a stochastic and population-based heuristic approach having the capability to solve global optimization problems. The main idea is to hybrid together the fine tuning capability of DE with the ability of exploration in HS to get better near-global solution by utilizing both algorithms' strengths. Here, HS-DE is used for optimal symmetric switching characterization of CMOS inverter. The performance of HS-DE is compared with conventional particle swarm optimization reported in the recent literature. HS-DE-based design results are also compared with the PSPICE results. Extensive simulation results justify superior optimization capability of HS-DE over the afore-mentioned optimization technique for the examples considered and can be efficiently used for optimal CMOS inverter design.

In this work, we evaluate performance of home energy management system(HEM) by using three meta-heuristic optimization techniques: harmony search algorithm (HSA), Bacterial foraging optimization (BFO) and Enhanced deferential evolution(EDE). We categorize appliances into three groups on the basis of their energy consumption pattern. Real time pricing (RTP) scheme is used for electricity bill calculation. Our objectives are to minimize electricity cost, energy consumption, reduction in peak to average ratio while maximizing user comfort. However, there exists a trade-off between different objectives. Our simulation results show that there exist a trade-off between user comfort and cost. Results also show that in terms of cost HSA perform better among other techniques.

harmony search(HS) algorithm is a good meta-heuristic intelligent optimization method,which has been paid much attention recently by many ***,there is a shortage of these intelligent optimization methods are easily trapped into local *** is no exception.A new variant of harmony search algorithm with random mutation strategy(HSRM),which is used to improve the performance of HS is proposed in this *** HSRM uses a random mutation strategy to instead of the pitch adjusting operation,and dynamically adjust the key parameters pitch adjusting rate(PAR).Furthermore,experiment results demonstrated that the proposed method is superior to the HS and recently developed variants(IHS,and GHS) and other meta-heuristic algorithms.

In Handwritten Character Recognition (HCR), interest in feature extraction has been on the increase with the abundance of algorithms derived to increase the accuracy of classification. In this paper, a metaheuristic approach for feature extraction technique in HCR based on harmony search algorithm (HSA) was proposed. Freeman Chain Code (FCC) was used as data representation. However, the FCC representation is dependent on the route length and branch of the character node. To solve this problem, the metaheuristic approach via HSA was proposed to find the shortest route length and minimum computational time for HCR. At the end, comparison of the result with other metaheuristic approaches namely, Differential Equation (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic algorithm (GA) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) was performed.

The legacy electric power system is defined as a one-way power flow from a centralized power generation plant to customers (consumers). In the smart distribution systems, the customers are allowed to produce electricity through the distributed energy resources (e. g. solar photovoltaics), as well as to consume energy, hence, the smart distribution systems can be defined as a two-way power flow. The Micro-Grid system is defined as a part of the smart distribution system that may include distributed energy resources, energy storage systems and loads. In addition, the Micro-Grid system can operate in two modes, grid-connected or non-grid-connected (i. e., islanded mode). The protection of the Micro-Grid system represents one of the major operational challenges, in particular when considering the integration of distributed energy resources, which may result in different fault current levels, especially in islanding mode. However, the capability of protection system equipment to be more accurate and dependable for faults diagnostic in the Micro-Grid is considered a challenge until now. In this thesis, an automated wavelet-based fault detection and diagnosis technique based on a combination of Wavelet Transform, harmony search algorithm, and Machine Learning approaches is developed for fault diagnosing in the Micro-Grid systems. The harmony search algorithm as an optimization technique is used to identify the optimum wavelet function(s) and the optimum wavelet decomposition level(s) to extract the most prominent features that are hidden in the current/voltage waveforms when applying the discrete wavelet transform. This is unlike previous works in which only one arbitrary wavelet function is used based on a trial and error process. Power loss reduction in distribution system is a vital target for any power utility. Distribution system losses can be optimally reduced using Photovoltaic (PV) units as a source of renewable energy. To guarantee optimal reduction in power losses, these PV units should be optimally located at certain nodes with certain sizes (power). In this paper, a Grey Wolf optimization technique is employed to determine the optimal location and size of PVs on the distribution network for reducing power loss, and consequently, improving the voltage profile especially in the radial system with long feeders. The Grey Wolf technique is compared with other two heuristic techniques which are;Genetic algorithm and harmony search technique to validate the proposed technique. The proposed technique is applied to the standard IEEE 69 bus for validation. Due to the uncertainty of solar radiation and wind speed, a probabilistic optimal load flow technique is implemented to formulate appropriate penetration levels to determine the optimal size and location of PV units in order to minimize the power losses. The obtained results have been compared with those of other techniques and superior improvement has been obtained.

The worldwide challenge for energy has become acuter than ever before. The shortage of fossil fuels as the number one resource of energy carrier has emphasized the need for revising the current trend of energy consumption. Additionally, the public awareness of carbon footprint problems has compelled experts to take proper environmental measurements. Energy efficiency measures are widely spread nowadays, and the main issue is to determine the most effective strategies. Recent statistics show that building sector is the main contributor to the world total energy consumption, which makes it responsible for a significant amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In particular, commercial buildings are under a special focus as they consume about 18% of total energy in the United States (U.S.). Since over 80% of the total energy use in buildings happens during the operational phase, governments have been employing several policies to support energy consumption reduction during buildings operation phase as an instantaneous and cost-effective method to decrease GHG emissions. Several factors including design and installation of suitable technology and occupants can significantly contribute to the success of energy efficiency measures. The proper design of buildings necessitates paying specific attention to the conceptual stage since numerous possible design options are made and roughly assessed to achieve the optimum solution. The diversity of proposed measures in the literature requires the decision maker to recompense several factors including environmental, energy, cost, and social factors to achieve the optimum solution. This requires designers to have access to a unique energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly model to address the interdependency of building design parameters and occupancy behaviors considering the whole life cycle of commercial buildings.
