The recent technological advancements have led to an increase in demand of the internet services and hence the power used by the Internet Data Centers has been on an all-time high. Due to this enormous energy consumption of the data centers there is a significant increase in the load at locations where they are built imposing a major impact on the electric grid. In this paper a survey is conducted on grid-aware design optimization problem for cloud computing systems. Thereby, the load in the grid is balanced reasonably by carefully distributing the service requests among the data centers. By doing so the reliability and the robustness of the grid with respect to link breakage and load demand variations is also improve. The optimization problem is studied using Linear Programming Optimization Technique, Minmax Optimization Technique, Genetic algorithm and harmony search algorithm.

This paper presents a new model for capacitated facility location problem, where serve radius and economic benefit are considered. In the new model, the objective is to maximize the total return investment. However, the objective for multiple knapsack problem is to maximize the total profit. So the capacitated facility location problem can be translated into multiple knapsack problem. Because this problem is difficult to solve, we propose a hybrid harmony search algorithm, which incorporates harmony search algorithm with greedy algorithm. Numerical results from computational experiments are presented and analyzed.

Constraint multiproduct joint-replenishment inventory control problem using uncertain programming

An uncertain economic order quantity (UEOQ) model with payment in advance is developed to purchase high-price raw materials. A joint policy of replenishments and pre-payments is employed to supply the materials. The rate of demand is considered LR-fuzzy variables, lead-time is taken to be constant, and it is assumed that shortage does not occur in the cycles. The cycle is divided into three parts;the first part is the time between the previous replenishment-time to the next order-time (t(0)), the second part is the period between t(0) to a payment-time (t(k)), and the third part is the period between t(k) to the next replenishment-time. At the start of the second part (t(0)), alpha% of the purchasing cost is paid. The (1 - alpha)% remaining purchasing cost is paid at the start of the third part (t(k)). The cost of the model is purchasing under incremental discount for each order with rough cost per unit, clearance cost, fixed-order cost, transportation cost, holding, and capital cost. Holding cost is for on-hand inventory and capital cost is for the capital that is paid for the next order. The constraints of the problem are space, budget, and the number of orders per year. Further, lead-time is considered less than a cycle time. We show that the model of this problem is a fuzzy integer-nonlinear-programming type and in order to solve it, a hybrid method of harmony search, fuzzy simulation, and rough simulation is proposed. In order to validate the results and examine the performance of the proposed method, a genetic algorithm, as well as a particle swarm optimization method is also employed. The results of a numerical example show that the proposed procedure has the best performance in terms of the mean of the objective function in different simulation runs. At the end, a case study along with a sensitivity analysis is given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methodology in real world inventory control problems and to provide some managerial insights.

Generalised multi-scale image reconstruction algorithm for electrical capacitance tomography

Successful applications of electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) depend mainly on the precision and speed of the image reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, based on the wavelet multi-scale analysis method, a generalised multi-scale model of considering the inaccuracy of the capacitance data and reconstruction model is proposed, in which the original inverse problem is decomposed into a sequence of inverse problems based on the scale variables and then solved successively from the largest scale to the smallest scale until the solution of the original inverse problem is found. A generalised multi-scale objective functional, which has been developed using the least trimmed squares (LTS) estimation and theM-estimation, is proposed. This objective functional unifies the regularised LTS estimation, the regularised M-estimations, the regularised least squares (LS) estimation, the regularised combinational estimation of the LTS estimation and the M-estimations, the regularised combinational estimation of the LS estimation and the M-estimations into a concise formulation. An efficient solver, which integrates the beneficial advantages of the homotopy algorithm, the harmony search (HS) algorithm that has been developed using the multi-harmony techniques based on the cooperation of solutions, and the particle collision (PC) algorithm, is designed for searching a possible global optimal solution. The proposed algorithm is tested by six typical reconstruction objects using a 12-electrode square sensor. Numerical results show the efficiency and superiority of the proposed algorithm in solving ECT image reconstruction problem. In the cases considered in this paper, good results that show great improvement in the spatial resolution and accuracy are observed. The spatial resolution of the reconstructed images by the proposed algorithm is enhanced and the artefacts in the reconstructed images can be eliminated effectively. A new hybrid approach for nonconvex economic dispatch problem with valve-point effect

In literature, economic dispatch problems are generally categorized as convex and nonconvex optimization problems. In this study, a solution is proposed for economic dispatch problem with valve point effect, which is one of the nonconvex optimization problems. For this reason the hybrid approach used for solution of this problem is formed as a combination of modified subgradient (MSG) and harmony search (HS) algorithms. This approach (MSG-HS) is applied in three different lossy test systems (Three machines 6-bus, IEEE 5-machines 14-bus, IEEE 6-machines 30-bus systems) solved with different methods in the literature. System losses are calculated by using B loss matrix. The resulting optimal solution values are compared with the solution values in the literature and the results are discussed. On the Shape Optimization of Self-Adaptive Grooves

Microscale mechanical self-adaptive bearings are a recent development in the field that offer promising features such as enhanced load-carrying capacity compared to conventional bearings. This study aims to improve the load-carrying capacity of these bearings by introducing novel deformable groove designs. The objective is to find the optimum groove's top surface shape that maximizes the load-carrying support. Assuming that the thickness can vary along the groove's length, three different thickness patterns including constant, linear, and spline are considered. A hybrid optimization algorithm based on the harmony search (HS) algorithm and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is utilized to find the optimum shape for each thickness pattern. A benchmark problem is considered to show the performance of new designs. Results show that the optimally designed grooves with spline thickness profile can have load-carrying capacities up to 45% larger than the original ones.

This paper presents an adaptive harmony search algorithm for solving structural optimization problems. The harmony memory considering rate and pitch adjusting rate are conceived as the two main parameters of the technique for generating new solution vectors. In the standard implementation of the technique appropriate constant values are assigned to these parameters following a sensitivity analysis for each problem considered. The success of the optimization process is directly related on a chosen parameter value set. The adaptive harmony search algorithm proposed here incorporates a new approach for adjusting these parameters automatically during the search for the most efficient optimization process. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is numerically investigated using two large-scale steel frameworks that are designed for minimum weight according to the provisions of ASD-AISC specification. The solutions obtained are compared with those of the standard algorithm as well as of the other metaheuristic search techniques. It is shown that the proposed algorithm improves performance of the technique and it renders unnecessary the initial selection of the harmony search parameters.

One major problem in the area of wireless sensor networks is the coverage problem. The coverage problem deals with the ability of the network to cover a certain area or some certain events. In this paper, we focus on the area coverage problem. We propose SRAHS, a sensing radius adjusting protocol, to deal with the problem of area coverage. In this protocol, proper sensing radius can be determined using the harmony search algorithm. Due to the proposed protocol accuracy in adjusting the nodes sensing radius, it is able to provide the full coverage in less densities. Moreover, as the result of increasing nodes density, the proposed protocol decreases both the nodes sensing radius and the energy consumption. We have simulated our protocol and simulation results show high efficiency of the proposed protocol

Music-inspired harmony search algorithm is a recently developed metaheuristic technique. It has been extensively used in the development of structural optimization algorithms. Several enhancements are suggested to standard harmony search method. In this paper, firstly these improvements are summarized and later they are used to determine the optimum design of three dimensional steel frames. The design constraints are implemented according to LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Corporation) in the formulation of the optimization problem. The minimum weight is taken as objective function. Two design examples are considered to evaluate the performance of seven different versions of harmony search algorithm.
