Selection of machining parameters in any machining process significantly affects the production rate, quality, and cost of a component. This paper presents the multi-objective optimization of process parameters of a grinding process using various non-traditional optimization techniques such as artificial bee colony, harmonysearch, and simulated annealing algorithms. The objectives considered in the present work are production cost, production rate, and surface finish subjected to the constraints of thermal damage, wheel wear, and machine tool stiffness. The process variables considered for optimization are wheel speed, workpiece speed, depth of dressing, and lead of dressing. The results of the algorithms presented are compared with the previously published results obtained by using other optimization techniques.

This study proposes a linked simulation-optimization model for solving the unknown groundwater pollution source identification problems. In the proposed model, MODFLOW and MT3DMS packages are used to simulate the flow and transport processes in the groundwater system. These models are then integrated with an optimization model which is based on the heuristic harmonysearch (HS) algorithm. In the proposed simulation-optimization model, the locations and release histories of the pollution sources are treated as the explicit decision variables and determined through the optimization model. Also, an implicit solution procedure is proposed to determine the optimum number of pollution sources which is an advantage of this model. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated on two hypothetical examples for simple and complex aquifer geometries, measurement error conditions, and different HS solution parameter sets. Identified results indicated that the proposed simulation-optimization model is an effective way and may be used to solve the inverse pollution source identification problems. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A novel random-guided optimization method is proposed for multiuser detection (MUD) in DS-CDMA systems employing the so-called harmonysearch (HS) algorithm. We specifically design the HS-aided MUD for the communications problem considered and apply it in an iterative joint MUD and channel decoding framework. Our simulation results demonstrate that a near-single-user performance can be achieved without the employment of the full-search-based optimum MUD even in extremely highly loaded DS-CDMA systems.

This paper presents a novel optimization approach using Improved harmonysearch (IHS) algorithm to solve economic power dispatch problem. The proposed methodology easily takes care of different equality and inequality constraints of the power dispatch problem to find the optimal solution. To show its efficiency, the proposed algorithm is applied to single area and multi area system of four area having 16 units with and without Prohibited Operating Zones (POZ). The results are compared with other existing relevant approaches. The result obtained by the proposed method confirmed that the robustness and efficiency of the algorithms over other reported methods.

This study investigates the use of global sensitivity analysis (GSA) and harmonysearch (HS) algorithm for design optimization of air cooled heat exchangers (ACHEs) from the economic viewpoint. In order to reduce the size of the optimization problem, GSA is performed to examine the effect of the design parameters and to identify the non-influential parameters. Then HS is applied to optimize influential parameters. To demonstrate the ability of the HS algorithm a case study is considered and for validation purpose, genetic algorithm (GA) is also applied to this case study. The increasing costs of fuel and operation of thermal power generating units warrant development of optimization methodologies for economic dispatch (ED) problems. Optimization methodologies that are based on meta-heuristic procedures could assist power generation policy analysts to achieve the goal of minimizing the generation costs. In this context, the objective of this study is to present a novel approach based on harmonysearch (HS) algorithm for solving ED problems, aiming to provide a practical alternative for conventional methods. To demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the proposed method and for the purposes of comparison. various types of ED problems are examined. harmonysearch method based optimum topology design algorithm is presented for single layer lamella domes. The harmonysearch method is a numerical optimization technique developed recently that imitates the musical performance process which takes place when a musician searches for a better state of harmony. Jazz improvisation seeks to find musically pleasing harmony similar to the optimum design process which seeks to find the optimum solution. The optimum design algorithm developed imposes the behavioral and performance constraints in accordance with LRFD-AISC. The optimum number of rings, the height of the crown and the tubular cross-sectional designations for dome members are treated as design variables. The member grouping is allowed so that the same section can be adopted for each group. The design algorithm developed has a routine that build the data for the geometry of the dome automatically that covers the numbering of joints, and member incidences, and the computation of the coordinates of joints. Due to the slenderness and the presence of imperfections in dome structures it is necessary to consider the geometric nonlinearity in the prediction of their response under the external loading. Design examples are considered to demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm presented.

In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed to limit the fault current in power systems which include distributed generation units. In the normal mode of operation, the series compensator sets as a line compensator. As soon as the fault is sensed, the new control mode is activated to limit the fault current, and properly interrupt the breaker. harmony search algorithm has also been used to optimize the parameters of series compensator controller. Simulations performed in MATLAB/Simulink environment indicate that the proposed control strategy performs well to limit the fault currents of distribution systems and restore the voltage at the point of common coupling to its preset value.
