Optimum surface roughness prediction in face milling by using neural network and harmony search algorithm

This paper presents a new approach to determine the optimal cutting parameters leading to minimum surface roughness in face milling of X20Cr13 stainless steel by coupling artificial neural network (ANN) and harmony search algorithm (HS). In this regard, advantages of statistical experimental design technique, experimental measurements, analysis of variance, artificial neural network and harmony search algorithm were exploited in an integrated manner. To this end, numerous experiments on X20Cr13 stainless steel were conducted to obtain surface roughness values. A predictive model for surface roughness was created using a feed forward neural network exploiting experimental data. The optimization problem was solved by harmony search algorithm. Additional experiments were performed to validate optimum surface roughness value predicted by HS algorithm. The obtained results show that the harmony search algorithm coupled with feed forward neural network is an efficient and accurate method in approaching the global minimum of surface roughness in face milling.

A comparative meta-heuristic and mathematical optimization approach is addressed in this paper to illustrate the weakness and strength of these optimization techniques in solving a large-scale optimization problem. harmony search algorithm (HSA) is selected as a meta-heuristic and combined CIPLEX with MINOS under Generalized Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) as mathematical ones. Combined Heat and Power Economic Dispatch (CHP-EDC) is considered in this paper as an aforementioned large-scale optimization task which has a convex nonlinear optimization model. Three types of thermal units are considered co-generation units, electrical only and heat-only units. Two adopted case studies are addressed to compare the meta-heuristic and mathematically optimization algorithm results and a well-defined large-scale case study also presented to illustrate the feasibility and tractability of proposed HSA. Optimal allocation of shunt Var compensators in power systems using a novel global harmony search algorithm

In this paper, a novel global harmony search algorithm (NGHS) is used to determine the optimal location and size of shunt reactive power compensators such as shunt capacitors, static Var compensators (SVCs), and static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) in a transmission network. The problem is decomposed into two subproblems. The first deals with the optimal placement of shunt Var compensation devices using the modal analysis method. The second subproblem is the optimization of the load flow using the NGHS algorithm. A multi-criterion objective function is defined to enhance the voltage stability, improve the voltage profile, and minimize power loss while minimizing the total cost. The results from a 57-bus test system show that the NGHS algorithm causes lower power loss and has better voltage profile and greater voltage stability than the improved harmony search algorithm (IHS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques in solving the placement and sizing problem of shunt Var compensators. Finally, a comparison of the convergence characteristics of three optimization methods demonstrates the greater accuracy and higher speed of the proposed NGHS algorithm in finding better solutions compared with PSO and IHS. Solving Multi-Objective Two-Sided Assembly Line Balancing Problems by harmony search algorithm Based on Pareto Entropy

Two-sided assembly lines are designed to produce large and complex products, where workers can perform on both sides at the same time. This paper establishes a mathematical model for the multi-objective two-sided assembly line balancing problems with additional constraints (MOATALBP). The model considers both workers skills and the balance of the assembly line, aiming to maximize efficiency and minimize workers cost and smoothness index. A harmony search algorithm (HS) based on Pareto entropy (PE-MHS) is proposed to solve MOATALBP. The difference entropy of Pareto solutions is employed to adjust the algorithm parameters to enhance the optimization ability of PE-MHS. Moreover, a fine-tuning operation combining insertion and inverse sequence is utilized to avoid the algorithm from falling into local optima. Ultimately, non-dominated sorting ensures a set of well-distributed Pareto solutions. The experimental results of different problems indicate that the proposed algorithm can achieve better solutions than three classical algorithms (NSGAII, SPEA2 and HS) for the MOATALBP.

Application of an Improved harmony search algorithm on Electric Vehicle Routing Problems

Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained considerable popularity, driven in part by an increased concern for the impact of automobile emissions on climate change. Electric vehicles (EVs) cover more than just conventional cars and trucks. They also include electric motorcycles, such as those produced by Gogoro, which serve as the primary mode of transportation for food and package delivery services in Taiwan. Consequently, the Electric Vehicle Routing Problem (EVRP) has emerged as an important variation of the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). In addition to the CVRP's constraints, the EVRP requires vehicles to visit a charging station before the battery level is insufficient to continue service. EV battery consumption is linearly correlated to their weight. These additional constraints make the EVRP more challenging than the conventional CVRP. This study proposes an improved harmony search algorithm (HSA), with performance validated by testing 24 available benchmark instances in the EVRP. This study also proposes a novel update mechanism in the improvement stage and a strategy to improve the routes with charging stations. The results show that in small and large instances, the proposed HSA improved the number of trips to the charging stations by 24% and 4.5%, respectively. These results were also verified using the Wilcoxon signed-rank significant test.

A new approach for forecasting enrollments using harmony search algorithm

In this paper, we report the development of a method for forecasting enrollments at the University of Alabama using the harmony search algorithm and fuzzy time series. In recent years, researchers have proposed many methods of forecasting, including forecasting enrollments at the University of Alabama or financial markets such as FOREX. In recent research efforts, it was determined that the lengths of the intervals in the universe of discourse and forecasting rules influence the accuracy of forecasting. Some forecasting methods use meta-heuristic algorithms (such as the genetic algorithm) to determine the optimum length of the intervals in the universe of discourse. In this paper, we propose a new, meta-heuristic algorithm (i.e., the harmony search algorithm) that is based on a high-order, fuzzy time series and overlapping intervals. In previous methods, it was assumed that the universe of discourse is partitioned into separate intervals that do not overlap. Here, it is shown that overlapping intervals in the universe of discourse can influence the accuracy of forecasted values.

The interaction parameter estimation problem in thermodynamic models is an important requirement and a common task in many areas of chemical engineering because these models form the basis for synthesis, design, optimization and control of process systems. Recently, this problem has been solved using minimization of Gibbs free energy, using global optimization techniques. In this paper, liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data of ternary system (water + alcohol + isopropyl ether) at 298.15 K is experimentally investigated, A newly developed heuristic algorithm, harmony search algorithm (HSA) is applied for solving the liquid-liquid phase equilibrium and estimation of binary interaction parameters of this ternary systems. The results of the proposed method are compared with the results given by other optimisation techniques such as genetic algorithm (GA). Feature selection method based on multi-fractal dimension and harmony search algorithm and its application

Feature selection is an important method of data preprocessing in data mining. In this paper, a novel feature selection method based on multi-fractal dimension and harmony search algorithm is proposed. Multi-fractal dimension is adopted as the evaluation criterion of feature subset, which can determine the number of selected features. An improved harmony search algorithm is used as the search strategy to improve the efficiency of feature selection. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of other feature selection algorithms on UCI data-sets. Besides, the proposed method is also used to predict the daily average concentration of PM2.5 in China. Experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain competitive results in terms of both prediction accuracy and the number of selected features.

IHSCR: Energy-efficient clustering and routing for wireless sensor networks based on harmony search algorithm

Clustering and routing are two key techniques to improve the energy efficiency of wireless sensor networks. As clustering and routing for improving the energy efficiency of wireless sensor networks are NP-hard problems, increasing meta-heuristic algorithms are introduced for solving them. However, due to their discreteness and strong constraints, most meta-heuristics are unsuitable or inefficient to optimize them. harmony search algorithm is one of the most suitable meta-heuristics for solving these problems. This article proposes a new energy-efficient clustering and routing algorithm based on harmony search algorithm to improve the energy efficiency of wireless sensor networks. The proposed approach contains two parts: clustering phase and routing phase. First, a new objective function model, which has considered balancing the energy consumption of both gateways and regular nodes as well as considered routing, is established for the clustering phase. Then, a new energy-efficient clustering algorithm is designed based on several improvements made to harmony search algorithm: (1) a discrete encoding scheme of a harmony for clustering is proposed;(2) a roulette wheel selection method is designed to choose a gateway for a regular sensor node to join, which is employed by two steps (i.e. initialization of harmony and improvisation of a new harmony);(3) the dynamically changed harmony memory considering rate is designed for improvisation of a new harmony;(4) a local search scheme is proposed to improve the best harmony within the harmony memory in iterations. In addition, the improved harmony search based energy-efficient routing algorithm that we proposed previously is employed to balance the energy consumption of gateways in the routing phase. The proposed approach is compared with several popular meta-heuristic-based clustering algorithms over extensive wireless sensor networks cases. Enhanced harmony search algorithm with non-linear control parameters for global optimization and engineering design problems

harmony search algorithm (HSA), inspired by the behaviors of music improvisation process, is a widely used metaheuristic to solve global optimization problems arises in various fields. The reason of its popularity is its simplicity of algorithm structure and good performance. However, the conventional harmony search algorithm (HSA) experiences prone towards the local optima, tedious task of tuning parameters, and premature convergence. To overcome all these drawbacks of conventional HSA and further improve the precision of numerical results, a new variant of the HSA called modified harmony search algorithm (MHSA) is proposed in the present study. This MHSA utilizes the valuable information stored in the harmony memory and modifies the search strategy to make an efficient search procedure by adopting a new formulation to the pitch adjustment process, randomization process, harmony memory considering rate (HMCR), and pitch adjustment rate (PAR). The experimental validation and comparative performance study with conventional HSA, variants of HSA such as adaptive harmony search with best based search strategy (ABHS), enhanced self-adaptive global-best harmony search (ESGHS), novel self-adaptive harmony search (NSHS), parameter adaptive harmony search (PAHS), Gaussian global-best harmony search algorithm (GGHS) and other metaheuristics such as sine cosine algorithm (SCA), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization (CLPSO), gbest-guided artificial bee colony (GABC), and covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) is conducted on a set of 23 well-known benchmark problems. In addition to this benchmarking, the proposed MHSA is also used to solve three structural engineering design problem. The statistical test and convergence behaviour analysis are used to analyze the quality of search and significance of improved accuracy.
