This paper presents an improved harmony search algorithm for the optimal reactive/voltage control problem. Optimal reactive/voltage control is a mixed integer, nonlinear optimization problem which includes both continuous and discrete control variables. The proposed algorithm is used to find the settings of control variables such as generator voltages, tap positions of tap changing transformers and the amount of reactive compensation devices to optimize a certain objective. The objectives are power transmission loss, voltage stability and voltage profile which are optimized separately. In the presented method, the inequality constraints are handled by penalty coefficients. The study is implemented on the IEEE 30 Bus system and the results are compared with other evolutionary programs such as harmony search algorithm (HSA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO).

This paper proposes to optimize the control parameters of DC-link voltage shunt active power filter (SAPF) by harmony search algorithm (HSA) and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) reduction in the system. The aim is motivated by the need to minimize the burden on the DC-link capacitor voltage to enhance performance of a shunt active power filter. In particular the attention has been focused on the Hybrid Compensation (HC), including an active filter and Passive Filter (PF) distributed in Micro-Grid (MG) system. Each passive filter has been designed to eliminate main harmonics;connected to nonlinear load and Dispersed Generation Sources (DGSs) and gain reactive power while it is the duty of active filter with instantaneous power theory (pq), to correct unbalanced system as well as eliminate harmonic left. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed scheme.

In cellular mobile communication network, for using the limited available spectrum to meet the increasing demand of customer, it is important to scheme frequency source by applying some optimized algorithm. To the question, an improved discrete harmonyalgorithm is proposed, particle location update strategies of the particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced, the probability of harmony memory size and the probability of pitch adjusting rate are adjusted dynamically, which improve the global optimization stability of the search results, enhance the universality and robustness of the algorithm, and improve the convergence rating and the convergence speed. Simulation results show that the improved algorithm applied to solve the problem of frequency assignment has achieved good results.

Although the original harmony search algorithm has been widely used in many fields such as numerical optimization, automatic control, there are no theories or formulae for the determination of values for parameters used in this algorithm yielding different assigned values based on different researchers' experiences or some researchers merely adopting recommendation from published references. The values are dynamic determined in consideration of the convergence degree of current individuals used in harmony search algorithm. Two parameters for the definition of convergence degree are adopted in this study. Designing of the composite services with desired quality is an interesting challenge of the web service environments. In a QoS-aware web service composition, appropriate services with acceptable quality are selected among several function-equivalent candidate services. The selection is performed in such a way that creates a composition with optimal quality which can satisfy user's quality constraints. In this paper, the problem of QoS-aware selection of web service composition is modeled as an optimization problem. Then the harmony search algorithm is adopted to find an optimal or near-optimal composition which can satisfy local and global user's constraints on quality attributes. The proposed method is a rapid and lightweight approach which can be applied to large service compositions with many service candidates.

This paper gives one kind of new harmony search algorithm-exponential fine-tuning harmony search algorithm. The specific improvement is to use an exponential function to change the generation mode of fine-tuning probability, and thus gives a new harmony. The new algorithm is tested by using the standard test function of cec2005, and compared with other four existing harmony search algorithms. The numerical results show that the new algorithm is very competitive with the other harmony search algorithms.

In this paper, a continuous harmonysearch (HS) approach is investigated for tackling the Uncapacitated Facility Location (UFL) task. This article proposes an efficient modified HS-based optimizer to improve the performance of HS on complex spatial tasks like UFL problems. For this aim, opposition-based learning (OBL) and chaotic patterns are utilized. The proposed technique is examined against several UFL benchmark challenges in specialized literature. Then, the modified HS is substantiated in detail and compared to the basic HS and some other methods. The results showed that new opposition-based chaotic HS (OBCHS) algorithm not only can exploit better solutions competently but it is able to outperform HS in solving UFL problems.

This paper descries a novel method for classification of human brain activity, such as electroencephalogram (EEG) signals related with motor imagery task using adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference (ANFI) model-based approach. The proposed method was focus on the demonstration of the availability of optimization of ANFI model using harmony search algorithm for classifying the motor imagery EEG signals. Before the optimization, the features of the ANFI model classifier are extracted by Hjorth parameters. HS algorithm is sufficiently adaptable to allow incorporation of other ANFI model training techniques like backpropagation, gradient descent method. In order to simulate the proposed method, three types of motor imagery tasks are performed and the results of the classification of EEG signals shows the good performance compared with previous approaches.

This paper investigates a new approach to find the optimal location and sizing of Distribution STATic COMpensator (DSTATCOM) with an objective function of minimizing the total network power losses. harmony search algorithm is used to find the optimal location and sizing of DSTATCOM. The proposed work is tested on standard IEEE 33-bus radial distribution systems. The obtained result shows that optimal placement and sizing of DSTATCOM in the radial distribution network effectively reduces the total power losses of the system. (C) 2015 The Authors. In the past three decades nature-inspired and meta-heuristic algorithms have dominated the literature in the broad areas of search and optimization. harmony search algorithm (HSA) is a music-inspired population-based meta-heuristic search and optimization algorithm. The concept behind the algorithm is to find a perfect state of harmony determined by aesthetic estimation. This paper starts with an overview of the harmonic phenomenon in music and music improvisation used by musicians and how it is applied to the optimization problem. The concept of harmony memory and its mathematical implementation are introduced. A review of HSA and its variants is presented. Guidelines from the literature on the choice of parameters used in HSA for effective solution of optimization problems are summarized.
