Allpass group delay equalizer design using harmony search algorithm is presented. Elliptic IIR lowpass and bandpass digital filters are first designed to meet given passband and stopband(s) magnitude response specifications. For each of the lowpass and bandpass digital filters, a cascaded allpass digital filter is then designed to equalize the IIR passband group delay such that the normalized group delay error of the combined passband group delay is minimized The allpass equalizer design results indicate that the approach using harmony search algorithm can achieve slightly improved results as compared to other methods.

Loss reduction planning is considered one of the most significant and sensitive distribution system designing studies. The planning process to reduce losses along with distributed generation sources results in a non-convex, non-linear optimization problem, mixed with integer variables, which requires complicated calculations. To solve this problem, evolutionary optimization algorithms can be used. In the present paper, loss reduction is carried out by reconfiguration the network in the light of distributed generation sources, and as a solution, a new set of harmony search algorithms, called self-adaptive algorithms are used. To verify the efficiency of the algorithm the results have been analyzed in the IEEE standard system. The findings show the strength and efficiency of this algorithm in comparison to other optimization algorithms.

In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with the increased flying times, improved command-control systems and carrying capacities have been used successfully for the various military and commerical projects. However, the time and qualities of the services provided by the mentioned vehicles are directly related with the locations determined previously or found instantly. In this study, an appropriate location of an UAV equipped with the base station capability for serving to the users is tried to be determined by utilizing from the harmonysearch (HS) algorithm. The results obtained by the HS algorithm are also compared with the results obtained by the PSO and ABC algorithms. Comparative results show that the mobile base station is capable of serving more successfully when its location is determined with the HS algorithm compared to the locations determined by the PSO or ABC algorithms.

A fair, efficient, and reasonable strategy for benefit transfer to multi-stakeholders is critical for preserving cooperation stability and development sustainability for cascade reservoirs under current comprehensive watershed development. This research proposes a novel approach to cascade reservoir planning that considers the need for multi-objective water resource development and benefit distribution to multiple stakeholders. The cascade reservoirs planning is modeled as the optimal dispatching model function and optimized by applying an enhanced harmony search algorithm (EHSA). Compared results with the previous methods show that the proposed method with EHSA produces total power generation higher and the calculation time faster convergence speed, respectively, than other competitive methods. The proposed method provides a feasible way to solve the optimal dispatching model of cascade reservoir planning in power generation.

Many optimisation problems are dynamic in the sense that changes occur during the optimisation process, and therefore are more challenging than the stationary problems. To solve dynamic optimisation problems, the proposed approaches should not only attempt to seek the global optima but be able to also keep track of changes in the track record of landscape solutions. In this research work, one of the most recent new population-based meta-heuristic optimisation technique called a harmony search algorithm for dynamic optimization problems is investigated. This technique mimics the musical process when a musician attempts to find a state of harmony. In order to cope with a dynamic behaviour, the proposed harmony search algorithm was hybridised with a (i) random immigrant, (ii) memory mechanism and (iii) memory based immigrant scheme. The performance of the proposed harmonysearch is verified by using the well-known dynamic test problem called the Moving Peak Benchmark (MPB) with a variety of peaks. The empirical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is able to obtain competitive results, but not the best for most of the cases, when compared to the best known results in the scientific literature published so far.

One of the important problems and active research topics in digital image precessing is image segmentation where thresholding is a simple and effective technique for this task. Multilevel thresholding is computationally complex task so different metaheuristics have been used to solve it. In this paper we propose harmony search algorithm for finding optimal threshold values in color images by Otsu's method. We tested our proposed algorithm on six standard benchmark images and compared the results with other approach from literature. This paper addresses the nurse rostering problem (NRP), whose objective is to minimize a total penalty caused by the roster. A large number of constraints required to be considered could cause a great difficulty of handling the NRP. A hybrid harmony search algorithm (HHSA) with a greedy local search is proposed to solve the NRP. A personal schedule is divided into several blocks, in which a subset of constraints is considered in advance. Based on these blocks, the pitch adjustment and randomization are carried out. Every time a roster is improvised, a coverage repairing procedure is applied to make the shift constraints satisfied, and the greedy local search is used to improve the roster's quality. The proposed HHAS was tested on many well known real-world problem instances and competitive solutions were obtained.

In order to modify the optimization performance of HS, a new variant of harmony search algorithm is proposed in this paper. The variant integrate the position updating of the particle swarm optimization algorithm with pitch adjustment operation, and dynamically adjust the key parameter pitch adjusting rate (PAR) and bandwidth (BW). Several standard benchmarks are to be tested. The numerical results demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method to the HS and recently developed variants (HIS, and GHS).
