harmony search Method with Global Sharing Factor Based on Natural Number Coding for Vehicle Routing Problem

This paper proposes an improved harmony search algorithm, and gives the definition of the Global Sharing Factor of the harmony search (HS) algorithm. In the definition, the number of creations of the HS algorithm is applied to the sharing factor and calculated. In this algorithm, the natural harmony encoding method is used to encode the initial harmony, and the total path length of all vehicles is taken as the optimization objective function. A new harmony generation strategy is proposed as follows: each tone component in an evolution is calculated separately using the new learning strategy and update strategy. In the calculation process, the tone component is judged by whether it needs to be adjusted according to the adjustment strategy. In this way, the problems of singularity and randomness of the new harmony generation strategy of basic HS are solved to improve the diversity of algorithm solutions. Then, a new harmony search method with Global Sharing Factor based on natural number coding and decoding for the Vehicle Routing Problem (GSF-HS-VRP) is proposed. The improved Global Sharing Factor-harmony search-Vehicle Routing Problem (GSF-HS-VRP) algorithm is applied to capacity-limited vehicle path optimization problems compared with the HS, Improved harmony search (IHS), Global-best harmony search (GHS), and Self-adaptive Global Best harmony search (SGHS) algorithms. The small-scale data and Solomon examples were adopted as the experimental data. Compared with the other four algorithms, the GSF-HS-VRP algorithm has the shortest running time, more rapid convergence speed, and higher efficiency. In the multi-vehicle test, with the increase of the number of vehicles, the optimized path of the vehicle is more satisfied in relation to the actual needs of customers. The results showed that this method could effectively improve the optimization performance of the capacity-limited vehicle routing problem.

A FO-PID Controlled Automatic Generation Control of Multi Area Power Systems Tuned by harmony search

Background: Power system stability demands minimum variation in frequency, so that load generation balance is maintained throughout the operation period. An Automatic Generation Control (AGC) monitors the frequency and varies the generation to maintain the balance. A system with multiple energy sources and use of a fractional controller for efficient control of stability is presented in the paper. At the outset a 2-area thermal system with governor dead hand, generation rate constraint and boiler dynamics have been applied. Methods: A variation of load is deliberated for the study of the considered system with harmony search (HS) algorithm, applied for providing optimization of controller parameters. Integral Square Time Square Error (ISTSE) is chosen as objective function for handling the process of tuning controller parameters. A study of similar system with various lately available techniques such as TLBO, hFA-PS and BFOA applied to PID, IDD and PIDD being compared to HS tuned fractional controller is presented under step and dynamic load change. The effort extended to a single area system with reheat thermal plant, hydel plant and a unit of wind plant is tested with the fractional controller scheme. Results: The simulation results provide a clear idea of the superiority of the combination of HS algorithm and FO-PID controller, under dynamically changing load. The variation of load is taken from 15 to 5% of the connected load. Conclusion: Finally, system robustness is shown by modifying essential factors by +/- 30%.

A detailed and comparative work for retinal vessel segmentation based on the most effective heuristic approaches

Computer based imaging and analysis techniques are frequently used for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases. Although retinal images are of high resolution, the contrast of the retinal blood vessels is usually very close to the background of the retinal image. The detection of the retinal blood vessels with low contrast or with contrast close to the background of the retinal image is too difficult. Therefore, improving algorithms which can successfully distinguish retinal blood vessels from the retinal image has become an important area of research. In this work, clustering based heuristic artificial bee colony, particle swarm optimization, differential evolution, teaching learning based optimization, grey wolf optimization, firefly and harmony search algorithms were applied for accurate segmentation of retinal vessels and their performances were compared in terms of convergence speed, mean squared error, standard deviation, sensitivity, specificity. accuracy and precision. From the simulation results it is seen that the performance of the algorithms in terms of convergence speed and mean squared error is close to each other. It is observed from the statistical analyses that the algorithms show stable behavior and also the vessel and the background pixels of the retinal image can successfully be clustered by the heuristic algorithms.

Optimum Design of Hybrid Base Isolation and Tuned Liquid Damper Systems for Structures under Near-Fault Ground Motions

Near-fault movements produce earthquakes with very large displacements, which are known for their destructive properties. The increase in the number of stories of a structure isolated from the base increases the weight of the structure, and this limits the mobility of the isolator. Especially in near-fault earthquakes, the addition of a damper is recommended to address this problem. The focus of this study is to investigate the effect of the hybrid use of a seismic isolator and a tuned liquid damping device on the control performance of a structure under near-fault earthquakes. For the hybrid system, a seismic base isolator is installed at the base of the structure and a tuned liquid damping (TLD) device containing water is installed at the top story of the structure. The performance of the isolator system under near-fault earthquakes for different damping and mobility capacities is investigated. The isolator and damper properties were optimized by the adaptive harmony search algorithm (AHS) to minimize the maximum acceleration, and critical earthquake analyses were performed. The control performance of the hybrid system was compared with the structural system using only the isolator. As a result of the study, it was observed that adding TLD to the isolator system reduces the isolator damage caused by large displacements in the isolator story and that the hybrid system requires a lower isolator period requirement under pulse near-fault earthquakes compared with no-pulse near-fault earthquakes.

Comparative Evaluation of Evapotranspiration and Optimization Schemes for Green Roof Runoff Simulations Using HYDRUS-1D

The use of green roofs, a low-impact development practice, can be an effective means of reducing direct runoff in urban centers. Green roof modeling can enable efficient design by preliminarily grasping the behavior of the green roof system according to specific configurations. In this study, we aimed to find appropriate evapotranspiration and parameter optimization schemes for HYDRUS-1D, a commonly used modeling tool for green roofs. Comparative studies of this sort in the context of green roof runoff modeling have not been conducted previously and are important in guiding users to overcome the difficulties of choosing the right numerical schemes for an accurate prediction of runoff from a green roof. As a study site, the Portland Building Ecoroof in Portland, Oregon, USA, was chosen, as green roof configurations and observed data for climate and runoff were available. From the simulation results of the runoff volume, the Blaney-Criddle method, which was considered an alternative, was found to be appropriate for calculating evapotranspiration from a green roof (R2 = 0.82) relative to the Hargreaves method built in HYDRUS-1D (R2 = 0.46). In addition, this study showed that the optimization method using the harmony search algorithm, which was proposed as an alternative optimizer, was better (R2 = 0.95) than that of the HYDRUS-1D's own optimization module (R2 = 0.82) in calibrating HYDRUS-1D for green roof runoff. The findings are thought to be useful in guiding modelers who are considering using HYDRUS-1D for green roof runoff simulations.

A joint optimization method for multi-UAV deployment and task scheduling in mobile edge computing with large-scale mobile users

In the realm of multi-UAV-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC), the joint optimization of UAV deployment and task scheduling has emerged as a potent approach for mitigating energy consumption while ensuring highquality services for mobile users. Nevertheless, the intricate interdependence between UAV deployment and task scheduling presents formidable challenges when implementing this scheme. In response, we introduce a novel methodology called the Dual-Stage Hybrid Strategy with Genetic-Simulated Annealing and Knowledge Sharing (DSHSGSK). DSHSGSK employs an alternating optimization strategy known as HS-GSK, supplemented by an elimination operator, to simultaneously optimize UAV deployment and task scheduling. In pursuit of heightened efficiency in UAV deployment and a more effective task scheduling strategy, we propose an innovative location encoding scheme for UAVs. To harness the local search capabilities of the harmony search (HS) algorithm and the global search capabilities of the Gaining Sharing Knowledge based algorithm (GSK), we introduce a coordination parameter (CP) to modulate the frequency of alternation between these two optimization techniques. Experimental results validate the superiority of our proposed method over other state-of-theart algorithms for jointly optimizing multi-UAV deployment and task scheduling. Notably, our approach excels in terms of energy consumption, underscoring its exceptional performance.

A novel disturbance rejection factor based stable direct adaptive fuzzy control strategy for a class of nonlinear systems

This paper proposes a unique disturbance rejection factor (DRF) based design of direct stable adaptive fuzzy logic controllers (AFLCs) for a class of non-linear systems with large and fast disturbances. The proposed AFLCs are realized by employing hybrid combinations of Lyapunov theory based local adaptation and harmony search algorithm based global optimization technique. These hybrid AFLCs are designed with the objective of optimizing both the structure and free parameters of it with guaranteed stability and, at the same time, simultaneously achieving satisfactory tracking performance and disturbance rejection. The novelty of the proposed work lies in the fact that, in a bid to perform the disturbance rejection, the nature of the disturbance itself is used in designing the tracking control law. The proposed DRF based hybrid stable AFLCs are implemented for several benchmark case studies and extensive performance evaluations demonstrate their usefulness.

Anti-swing control of the overhead crane system based on the harmony search radial basis function neural network algorithm

The swing of the grab is a main factor affecting the working efficiency of overhead cranes. Thus, planning the optimal motion path can reduce the adverse effects caused by the grab swing and improve the loading and unloading efficiency. The dynamic model of the trolley-grab system is established by considering factors like the change of rope length, wind load, and air resistance. First, the radial basis function neural network is applied to generate a feasible motion trajectory of the crane trolley. Taking the swing angle and angular velocity of the grab at the discharge point as evaluation, the harmony search algorithm is then applied to optimize the neural network parameters and obtain the optimal anti-swing motion trajectory. The numerical simulation and practical testing results show that the harmony search-radial basis function algorithm generates a smooth motion trajectory with good convergence, achieving anti-swing control of the trolley-grab system.

Present-day wireless methods are necessary to support a variety of higher-speed data communication facilities for its subscribers such as cloud-based video streaming facilities. One method to attain this is by using efficient resource allocation systems for transmitters and receivers using wireless communication methods. Wireless strategies and technologies are ubiquitous and enhancing progressively in the present world. In wireless communication technology, power and resource allocation remain the main issue due to the lack of resources by optimizing the number of subscribers and services. Hence, in this paper, we discuss different algorithms and techniques such as power-efficient resource allocation algorithm, real-time scheduling algorithm, NOMA, SCMA, Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, OFDMA, power and resource distribution in 5G, wireless sensor networks (WSNs), smart grids, cloud computing, and fog computing which converges stably and quickly. The harmony search algorithm is also another way used for resources in wireless communication networks and discussed in this paper.

Weight Optimization of Discrete Truss Structures Using Quantum-Based HS algorithm

Recently, a new field that combines metaheuristic algorithms and quantum computing has been created and is being applied to optimization problems in various fields. However, the application of quantum computing-based metaheuristic algorithms to the optimization of structural engineering is insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, we tried to optimize the weight of the truss structure using the QbHS (quantum-based harmony search) algorithm, which combines quantum computing and conventional HS (harmony search) algorithms. First, the convergence performance according to the parameter change of the QbHS algorithm was compared. The parameters selected for the comparison of convergence performance are QHMS, QHMCR, QPAR, & epsilon;, and & theta;r. The selected parameters were compared using six benchmark functions, and the range for deriving the optimal convergence performance was found. In addition, weight optimization was performed by applying it to a truss structure with a discrete cross-sectional area. The QbHS algorithm derived a lower weight than the QEA (quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm) and confirmed that the convergence performance was better. A new algorithm that combines quantum computing and metaheuristic algorithms is required for application to various engineering problems, and this effort is essential for the expansion of future algorithm development.
