Optimum Design of Hybrid Base Isolation and Tuned Liquid Damper Systems for Structures under Near-Fault Ground Motions

Near-fault movements produce earthquakes with very large displacements, which are known for their destructive properties. The increase in the number of stories of a structure isolated from the base increases the weight of the structure, and this limits the mobility of the isolator. Especially in near-fault earthquakes, the addition of a damper is recommended to address this problem. The focus of this study is to investigate the effect of the hybrid use of a seismic isolator and a tuned liquid damping device on the control performance of a structure under near-fault earthquakes. For the hybrid system, a seismic base isolator is installed at the base of the structure and a tuned liquid damping (TLD) device containing water is installed at the top story of the structure. The performance of the isolator system under near-fault earthquakes for different damping and mobility capacities is investigated. The isolator and damper properties were optimized by the adaptive harmony search algorithm (AHS) to minimize the maximum acceleration, and critical earthquake analyses were performed. The control performance of the hybrid system was compared with the structural system using only the isolator. As a result of the study, it was observed that adding TLD to the isolator system reduces the isolator damage caused by large displacements in the isolator story and that the hybrid system requires a lower isolator period requirement under pulse near-fault earthquakes compared with no-pulse near-fault earthquakes.

A new generation of centrifugal pumps for high conversion efficiency

Centrifugal pumps are fundamental machines in our daily life. Indeed, they can be found everywhere, for instance, in domestic, civil, industrial, and agricultural fields. In the last years, the pump market has newly gained a boost coherently with the world demographic growth. Pumps are among the main responsible for electric energy consumption, therefore even a slight efficiency improvement (+1%) can be effective in contrasting the growth of the global Greenhouse Gas Emissions (at least -570 tCO(2)/day in Europe). For this reason, a new generation of centrifugal pumps is here proposed. In particular, the impeller has been redesigned improving the flow guidance inside the vanes and simultaneously reducing the number of blades, with the aim to increase the blade loading, reducing manufacturing costs, and enhancing the conversion efficiency with respect to conventional configurations. Furthermore, the new impeller design respects all the geometrical constraints of the corresponding conventional configuration, allowing its retrofit with a boost of performance. To reach these goals, a 1D in-house code has been developed implementing a harmony search algorithm (HSA) for the selection of the most suitable design point (H and Q), and introducing two parameters for the blade loading evaluation, namely, the blade pressure coefficient (C-p,C- blade), computed locally along the impeller blade walls, and the blade lift coefficient (C-L), achieving an optimal vane arrangement. Starting from a baseline centrifugal pump, the novel impeller has been designed, manufactured, and finally experimentally tested. The resulting new generation of centrifugal pumps actually proves to have a higher performance (maximum efficiency at BEP +1%), a flatter efficiency curve, and a monotone bending characteristic curve, while keeping unchanged the required Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH3%).

Structural Behavior of a Composite Curtain Wall Fabricated by the Fused Deposition Modeling 3D Printing Method

In this era of the fourth industrial revolution, the integration of big data and 3D printing technology with the construction industry has maximized productivity. Currently, there is an active effort to research the optimal cladding structure through 3D printing technology to reduce production costs. This paper proposes a new type of 3D print curtain wall, using a high-strength ABS-M30 polymer panel, which is stronger than the standard acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer, as an internally reinforced structure. This structure is fabricated via fused deposition modeling, a 3D printing method, to reduce the weight of the general cement panel. In addition, the shape of the polymer board was designed;three shapes were considered-O, W, and X types-which aided in further reducing the weight of the cladding. After comparing the center deformation of the structure through a lateral load test and finite element method analysis, the optimal model was selected. The measured data of the two methods at a design wind speed of 100% showed a difference of approximately 10%;however, at 150% of the design wind speed, the difference between the two sets of data increased to 27%.

This research presents the synthesis of the concentric ring antenna arrays for a wide coverage pattern. The synthesis process is formulated as an optimization of the antenna excitations. harmony search algorithm and particle swarm optimization are implemented for this optimization problem. The antenna array considers disk patches at the L-band. First, the synthesis regards the behavior of the antenna array modeled by the cavity model. Second, the mutual coupling is included by using the full wave simulation. This synthesis could be very useful in satellites with terrestrial global coverage. The obtained antenna array provides a wide uniform power density and reduces considerably the hardware complexity for a satellite antenna system. Copyright (c) 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Comparative Evaluation of Evapotranspiration and Optimization Schemes for Green Roof Runoff Simulations Using HYDRUS-1D

The use of green roofs, a low-impact development practice, can be an effective means of reducing direct runoff in urban centers. Green roof modeling can enable efficient design by preliminarily grasping the behavior of the green roof system according to specific configurations. In this study, we aimed to find appropriate evapotranspiration and parameter optimization schemes for HYDRUS-1D, a commonly used modeling tool for green roofs. Comparative studies of this sort in the context of green roof runoff modeling have not been conducted previously and are important in guiding users to overcome the difficulties of choosing the right numerical schemes for an accurate prediction of runoff from a green roof. As a study site, the Portland Building Ecoroof in Portland, Oregon, USA, was chosen, as green roof configurations and observed data for climate and runoff were available. From the simulation results of the runoff volume, the Blaney-Criddle method, which was considered an alternative, was found to be appropriate for calculating evapotranspiration from a green roof (R2 = 0.82) relative to the Hargreaves method built in HYDRUS-1D (R2 = 0.46). In addition, this study showed that the optimization method using the harmony search algorithm, which was proposed as an alternative optimizer, was better (R2 = 0.95) than that of the HYDRUS-1D's own optimization module (R2 = 0.82) in calibrating HYDRUS-1D for green roof runoff. The findings are thought to be useful in guiding modelers who are considering using HYDRUS-1D for green roof runoff simulations.

A joint optimization method for multi-UAV deployment and task scheduling in mobile edge computing with large-scale mobile users

In the realm of multi-UAV-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC), the joint optimization of UAV deployment and task scheduling has emerged as a potent approach for mitigating energy consumption while ensuring highquality services for mobile users. Nevertheless, the intricate interdependence between UAV deployment and task scheduling presents formidable challenges when implementing this scheme. In response, we introduce a novel methodology called the Dual-Stage Hybrid Strategy with Genetic-Simulated Annealing and Knowledge Sharing (DSHSGSK). DSHSGSK employs an alternating optimization strategy known as HS-GSK, supplemented by an elimination operator, to simultaneously optimize UAV deployment and task scheduling. In pursuit of heightened efficiency in UAV deployment and a more effective task scheduling strategy, we propose an innovative location encoding scheme for UAVs. To harness the local search capabilities of the harmony search (HS) algorithm and the global search capabilities of the Gaining Sharing Knowledge based algorithm (GSK), we introduce a coordination parameter (CP) to modulate the frequency of alternation between these two optimization techniques. Experimental results validate the superiority of our proposed method over other state-of-theart algorithms for jointly optimizing multi-UAV deployment and task scheduling. Notably, our approach excels in terms of energy consumption, underscoring its exceptional performance.

Multi-UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle)-supported mobile edge computing system deploys multiple UAVs as flight edge clouds for large-scale users. In this system, how to optimize the deployment of UAVs is important for providing good service for all mobile users. Specifically, for each mobile user, we need to determine whether the task can be performed locally or on the drone (i.e., the unload decision) and how much resources should be allocated. In this paper, a new two-level optimization method is proposed for UAV deployment and task scheduling problem to minimize the system energy consumption. The proposed algorithm is named TSHGHSDE algorithm, in which a few features are designed to enhance the algorithm performance. Firstly, a two-stage optimization strategy is proposed based on HS-DE algorithm. In the early stage, HS algorithm is used for the local search in a limited space, and the DE algorithm is employed for the global search in the late stage. Secondly, we design an effective control parameter to adjust the search process, which aims to effectively combine the local search ability of HS algorithm and the global search ability of DE algorithm. Thirdly, a novel encoding mechanism is proposed in the process of the UAV deployment optimization. A global search strategy is designed to enhance the performance of the proposed algorithm. To assess the performance of the proposed algorithm, some well-known algorithms are used for comparison in experiments. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs better in terms of the search efficiency, search accuracy and stability.

Size and Topology Optimization of Truss Structures Using Quantum-Based HS algorithm

With the development of various metaheuristic algorithms, research cases that perform weight optimization of truss structures are steadily progressing. In particular, due to the possibility of developing quantum computers, metaheuristic algorithms combined with quantum computation are being developed. In this paper, the QbHS (Quantum based harmony search) algorithm was proposed by combining quantum computation and the conventional HS (harmony search) algorithms, and the size and topology optimization of the truss structure was performed. The QbHS algorithm has the same repetitive computational structure as the conventional HS algorithm. However, the QbHS algorithm constructed QHM (Quantum harmony Memory) using the probability of Q-bit and proposed to perform pitch adjusting using the basic state of Q-bit. To perform weight optimization of truss structures using the proposed QbHS algorithm, 20 bar, 24 bar, and 72-bar truss structures were adopted as examples and compared with the results of the QE (Quantum Evolutionary) algorithm. As a result, it was confirmed that the QbHS algorithm had excellent convergence performance by finding a lower weight than the QE algorithm. In addition, by expressing the weight optimization results of the truss structure with an image coordinate system, the topology of the truss structure could be confirmed only by the picture. The results of this study are expected to play an important role in future computer information systems by combining quantum computation and conventional HS algorithms.

Joint optimization of space allocation and yard crane deployment in container terminal under uncertain demand

The fluctuation of container transportation volume caused by trade policy, epidemic disease and other factors has a significant impact on the terminal yard management. Especially, the decision of yard space problem and yard crane deployment problem is depending on the arriving container volume. Due to the limited space and mechanical resources of the terminal yard, the uncertain container demand will lead to the waste or shortage of yard resources. In order to improve the efficiency of yard management, this paper studies the integrated optimization of yard resources considering the impact of uncertain container demand, and a stochastic optimization model is established to improve the robustness of the daily yard management. Due to the complexity of the model, a harmony search algorithm based on two-stage decomposition strategy is designed to solve the proposed model. To accelerate the solving speed, a scoring method is developed to generate the initial space allocation plan, and a Tabu list is added to improve the solution quality. The numerical experiments are conducted to validate effectiveness and efficiency of the method.

A metaheuristic-based optimum tuning approach for tuned liquid dampers for structures

This study focuses on the optimization of tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) by using metaheuristic methods using a natural phenomenon as inspiration. Unlike tuned mass dampers (TMDs), TLDs consist of two parts of bodies that contain the passive liquid that is stationary and the active part of the liquid that involves in sloshing. To optimize the amount of optimum active and passive liquids by finding the best dimensional properties of the liquid tank, a two-degree-of-freedom (DOF) model was used as TLD in the dynamic analysis used in the optimization that aims to reduce the maximum displacement of the structure under earthquake excitations. For this purpose, water, oil, and glycerin liquids were selected for TLD. TLD parameters were optimized with the help of Jaya algorithm, flower pollination algorithm (FPA), harmony search (HS) algorithm, and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO). Total acceleration and maximum displacement were evaluated after optimization. The performance of TLD under earthquake excitations has been also compared with TMDs. According to the results, the optimized TLD has a better performance than TMD, and Jaya algorithm has a slightly better performance than the other algorithms.
