A novel robust model for location-allocation of healthcare facilities considering pre-disaster and post-disaster characteristics

Healthcare centers are one of the most important municipal facilities that are responsible for providing personal and social health. Locating medical centers is an important strategy to improve the performance of these facilities and reduce any delay in the relief process. During disasters, these centers play a critical role in reducing the risk of human casualties. In this regard, the current study aims to establish a new robust mathematical model to simultaneously locate and allocate healthcare facilities, including different levels of medical care services, considering the characteristics in normal and disaster situations. Further, to help victims and prevent overcrowding at medical centers during disasters, establishment of temporary and outpatient centers was suggested for emergency provision of basic services. In addition, the possibility of delivering the needed equipment and medical teams to these centers was incorporated in the proposed modeling. To solve the problem, two metaheuristic algorithms, harmony search algorithm and hybrid tabu search combined with variable neighborhood search algorithm, and a lower bound based on Lagrangian relaxation method were employed. To assess the performance of the proposed algorithms, sample problems were randomly generated. The results obtained from the exact solutions and lower bound from the Lagrangian relaxation method were compared with those from the meta-heuristic algorithms, confirming the good performance of the proposed algorithms. Smart Hydropower Water Distribution Networks, Use of Artificial Intelligence Methods and Metaheuristic algorithms to Generate Energy from Existing Water Supply Networks

In this paper, the possibility of installing small hydraulic turbines in existing water-supply networks, which exploit the daily pressure fluctuations in order to produce energy, is examined. For this purpose, a network of five pressure sensors is developed, which is connected to an artificial intelligence system in order to predict the daily pressure values of all nodes of the network. The sensors are placed at the critical nodes of the network. The locations of the critical nodes are implemented by applying graph theory algorithms to the water distribution network. EPANET software is used to generate the artificial intelligence training data with an appropriate external call from a Python script. Then, an improvement model is implemented using the harmony search algorithm in order to calculate the daily pressure program, which can be allocated to the turbines and, consequently, the maximum energy production. The proposed methodology is applied to a benchmark water supply network and the results are presented.

The optimization of dam operations to transform them into multi-objective facilities constitutes a challenge for both hydrology, hydrogeology, and hydropower generation. However, the use of the optimal algorithm for such transformation is critically important. Additionally, the literature has highlighted that dams might negatively influence the recharge of groundwater. Within this study, we provide an overview of the available algorithms for the optimization of dam operations. Additionally, an overview focusing on hydropower generation in Greece illustrates the high potential of the Mediterranean region for hydropower generation and the application of MAR. The water quality of the reservoirs is also highlighted as a critical parameter. Within this study, we present indices for water quality monitoring in dam reservoirs, while the most prevailing index is the SRDD. This study constitutes a guide for researchers in choosing the optimal tools for the optimization of dam operations and the water quality monitoring of reservoirs. The present study suggests a meta-heuristic optimization methodology using the harmony search algorithm. The model uses a geometric model of the reservoir and calculates the level-supply curve. Furthermore, a multi-criteria optimization model was developed with two objective functions: the maximum power output from the hydroelectric power plant turbines and the optimal groundwater recharge. The model with appropriate parameter modifications can be applied to any small dam as it is a decision- and policy-making methodology, independent of local conditions. A further step is the application of these approaches dealing with field data and the numerical modeling of case studies. The interdisciplinary approach of this study links deferent aspect and scientific perceptions, providing a comprehensive guide to optimal water resource management and environmental sustainability.

In this paper, the optimal distribution model of hydropower load is proposed and the operation constraints of wind power and hydropower are taken into consideration. In the process of sending power to the provincial network, the harmonic search algorithm is introduced to optimize the maximum power generation target, and the validity of the model is verified in the case of central China regional power grid.

Fault Diagnosis of On-Load Tap-Changer Based on Variational Mode Decomposition and Relevance Vector Machine

In order to improve the intelligent diagnosis level of an on-load tap-changer's (OLTC) mechanical condition, a feature extraction method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and weight divergence was proposed. The harmony search (HS) algorithm was used to optimize the parameter selection of the relevance vector machine (RVM). Firstly, the OLTC vibration signal was decomposed into a series of finite-bandwidth intrinsic mode function (IMF) by VMD under different working conditions. The weight divergence was extracted to characterize the complexity of the vibration signal. Then, weight divergence was used as training and test samples of the harmony search optimization-relevance vector machine (HS-RVM). The experimental results suggested that the proposed integrated model has high fault diagnosis accuracy. This model can accurately extract the characteristics of the mechanical condition, and provide a reference for the practical OLTC intelligent fault diagnosis.

Reduction of Total Harmonic Distortion of Wind Turbine Active Power Using Blade Angle Adaptive PI Controller

Power quality can have a large detrimental effect on industrial processes and the commercial sector. Thus, this paper proposes a new technique to improve the power quality of electric power systems. This technique relies on auto-adjusting of the blade angle to mitigate the harmonics in wind generator active power. A new adaptive PI blade-angle controller is applied in this technique to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output power. The parameters of the adaptive PI controller are initialized by using the harmony search algorithm (HSA), hybrid harmony search optimization and Equilibrium optimization (EO), and hybrid harmony search optimization and Teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO). The execution of the optimization algorithms relies mainly on the optimization objective function. Two optimization objective functions are mathematically modeled and compared to enhance the power quality. The first one is to minimize the sum square of error, while the second objective is to minimize the THD. Many case studies are applied with various wind-speed profiles under normal and faulty conditions. Results show the superiority of HSA hybrid EO algorithm with the second objective functions through reducing the harmonics and enhancing the power quality. Moreover, laboratory studies are applied to investigate the effect of the blade-angle variations on the extracted active power.

An Efficient Hybrid algorithm Based on HS and SFLA

When used for optimizing complex functions, harmony search (HS) and shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) algorithm tend to easily get trapped into local optima and result in low convergence precision. To overcome such shortcomings, a hybrid mechanism of selective search by combining HS algorithm and SFLA algorithm is as well proposed. An HS-SFLA algorithm is designed by taking the advantages of HS and SFLA algorithms. The hybrid algorithm of HS-SFLA is adopted for dealing with complex function optimization problems, the experimental results show that HS-SFLA outperforms other state-of-the-art intelligence algorithms significantly in terms of global search ability, convergence speed and robustness on 80% of the benchmark functions tested. The HS-SFLA algorithm could directly be applied to all kinds of continuous optimization problems in the real world.

Applying optimized relevance vector regression approach for indirect forecasting rock mass deformation modulus

Rock mass deformation modulus is a significant design parameter in surface/underground projects such as foundations, slopes and tunnels. Due to the presence of discontinuities in the rock mass, determining this deformation modulus by analyzing cylindrical core samples is very difficult. Since it is difficult to determine the deformability of rock masses at the laboratory scale, several in situ test techniques have been developed, such as dilatometer, plate-loading tests, and so on. However, determining the deformation modulus from in situ test techniques is highly costly, time-consuming and sometimes impossible to perform. To address this issue, in this paper, the results of the application of relevance vector regression (RVR) optimized by harmony search (HS) to create an estimation model for the indirect predicting rock mass deformation modulus was presented. The RVR-HS model was applied to data from open access literature. In this model, the deformation modulus was used as the output, while elastic modulus of intact rock (E-i), uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock (UCS), rock mass rating (RMR) and depth were as the input variables. The RVR-HS model, with MSE = 0.0172 and R-2 = 0.8696, is a dependable technique for forecasting the deformation modulus with a high level of precision and reliability.

Improving water quality modelling for green roof runoff using Storm Water Management Model

Modelling of green roof is important for assessing its effectiveness as a low impact development (LID) practice. This study evaluated the performance of Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)'s LID Controls for modelling runoff water quality load from a green roof in Portland, Oregon, USA, for possible improvement. Such an attempt has been made rarely, although plenty of studies have evaluated SWMM's LID Controls for predicting green roof runoff. From the evaluation, the applicability of the SWMM for evaluating water quality such as total phosphorous (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) was "not satisfactory". Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) value was 0.27 for TN and -1.45 for TP when using "rain concentration", the only parameter available for water quality simulation of green roof runoff. The applicability was improved to "very good" level for TP with an NSE value of 0.66 when buildup and washoff were made possible by creating an imaginary twin subcatchment of the same size as the original one. However, NSE value for TN was not improved. The value of the work is that it could lead to a more accurate green roof design by minimizing pollutant release with improved prediction technology for TP.

A hybrid backtracking search optimization algorithm for nonlinear optimal control problems with complex dynamic constraints

Nonlinear optimal control (NOC) problem with complex dynamic constraints (CDC) is difficult to compute even with direct method. In this paper, a hybrid two-stage approach integrating an improved backtracking search optimization algorithm (IBSA) with the hp-adaptive Gauss pseudo-spectral methods (hpGPM) is proposed. Firstly, BSA is improved to enhance its convergent speed and the global search ability, by adopting the harmony search strategy and an adaptive amplitude control factor with individual optimum fitness feedback. Then, at the beginning stage of the hybrid search process, an initialization generator is constructed using IBSA to find a near optimum solution. When the change in fitness function approaches to a predefined value which is small enough, the search process is replaced by hpGPM to accelerate the search process and find an accurate solution. By this way, the hybrid algorithm is able to find a global optimum more quickly and accurately. Two NOC problems with CDC are examined using the proposed algorithm, and the corresponding Monte Carlo simulations are conducted. The comparison results show the hybrid algorithm achieves better performance in convergent speed, accuracy and robustness.
