harmony search algorithm, which simulates the musical improvisation process in seeking agreeable harmony, is a population based meta-heuristics algorithm for solving optimization problems. Although it has been successfully applied on various optimization problems;it suffers the slow convergence problem, which greatly hinders its applicability for getting good quality solution. Therefore, in this work, we propose a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm that hybridizes a harmonysearch with simulated annealing for the purpose of improving the performance of harmony search algorithm. harmony search algorithm is used to explore the search spaces. Whilst, simulated annealing algorithm is used inside the harmony search algorithm to exploit the search space and further improve the solutions that are generated by harmony search algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested using the Solomon's Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW) benchmark. Numerical results demonstrate that the hybrid approach is better than the harmonysearch without simulated annealing and the hybrid also proves itself to be more competent (if not better on some instances) when compared to other approaches in the literature.

The recent technological advancements have led to an increase in demand of the internet services and hence the power used by the Internet Data Centers has been on an all-time high. Due to this enormous energy consumption of the data centers there is a significant increase in the load at locations where they are built imposing a major impact on the electric grid. In this paper a survey is conducted on grid-aware design optimization problem for cloud computing systems. Thereby, the load in the grid is balanced reasonably by carefully distributing the service requests among the data centers. By doing so the reliability and the robustness of the grid with respect to link breakage and load demand variations is also improve. The optimization problem is studied using Linear Programming Optimization Technique, Minmax Optimization Technique, Genetic algorithm and harmony search algorithm.

This paper presents a new model for capacitated facility location problem, where serve radius and economic benefit are considered. In the new model, the objective is to maximize the total return investment. However, the objective for multiple knapsack problem is to maximize the total profit. So the capacitated facility location problem can be translated into multiple knapsack problem. Because this problem is difficult to solve, we propose a hybrid harmony search algorithm, which incorporates harmony search algorithm with greedy algorithm. Numerical results from computational experiments are presented and analyzed.

This paper presents a new strategy includes of fuzzy PID controller and Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices in power system for damping the oscillation. This models improves the stability in multi-machine power system by coupling the fuzzy controller with an intelligent algorithm and equipping the FACTS devices to control voltages and power flows. Also, the thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) as well as Static VAR Compensator (SVC) effects have been considered in this design. The harmony search algorithm (HSA) is applied in this model for fine tuning of the fuzzy PID parameters through time overriding and stability enhancement of proposed controller. Effectiveness of the proposed approach is applied over standard multi-machine power system through comparison with other techniques. Obtained results demonstrate the validity of proposed strategy.

In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed to limit the fault current in power systems which include distributed generation units. In the normal mode of operation, the series compensator acts as a line compensator. As soon as the fault is sensed, the new control mode is activated to limit the fault current, and properly interrupt the breaker. harmony search algorithm has also been used to optimize the parameters of series compensator controller. Simulations performed in MATLAB/Simulink environment indicate that the proposed control strategy performs well to limit the fault currents of distribution systems and restore the voltage at the point of common coupling to its preset value.

This work investigates the problem of extending the lifetime of dynamic heterogeneous WSNs with energy-harvesting (EH) sensors to enhancing the total WSN lifetime. This problem is modeled as finding the maximal number of covers each of which can cover all targets to be monitored. Since the concerned problem is also NP-complete, this work proposes a novel harmony search algorithm. By simulation, the proposed algorithm is shown to be promising.
