Innovative organizations' CSR signaling: Consumer perceptions, expectations, and outcomes

This research builds upon signaling theory and employs three studies to examine the unique CSR signaling of innovative organizations and the associated consumer perceptions, expectations, and outcomes. Archival data analysis reveals that high innovativeness organizations participate in more and distinct types of CSR signaling, compared to their less innovative counterparts. A theoretical framework integrating signaling and expectations theories explores whether the unique CSR signaling of innovative organizations aligns with consumer expectations and the associated outcomes. Two experimental studies demonstrate that consumers have heightened CSR signaling expectations for innovative brands, leading to greater purchase intentions when CSR practices and expectations align. A final study explores how multiple signals inform consumer expectations, specifically the interactive influence of a CEO transition signal. These findings yield insight into the unique CSR signaling of innovative organizations, the related consumer perceptions, expectations, and outcomes, and the importance of signal portfolio management to attain marketplace advantages.

Risk factors for worse anxiety trajectories among patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy

PurposePatients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer often experience heightened anxiety. While receipt of chemotherapy occurs over multiple cycles, limited research has examined anxiety longitudinally. The purposes of this study, in a large sample of patients with breast, gynecological, gastrointestinal, or lung cancer, were to evaluate, over the course of two cycles of chemotherapy, for inter-individual differences in the trajectories of anxiety and identify associations between demographic, clinical, symptom, and psychological adjustment characteristics and initial levels and trajectories of anxiety. MethodsPatients with breast, gynecologic, lung, or gastrointestinal cancer (n = 1323) were assessed with the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) six times over two cycles of chemotherapy. At enrollment, patients completed self-report instruments assessing demographic, symptom, stress, and coping characteristics. We used hierarchical linear modeling to identify risk factors associated with initial levels and trajectories of state anxiety. ResultsInter-individual differences in initial levels of anxiety were associated with functional status, sleep disturbance, morning fatigue, cognitive function, global and cancer-specific stress, resilience, and several coping characteristics (i.e., sense of coherence, acceptance, using emotional support, self-distraction, denial, venting, and self-blame). Demographic and clinical characteristics associated with interindividual differences in anxiety trajectories were age, employment status, and MAX-2 score. ConclusionThis study provides novel data on the course and predictors of anxiety during two cycles of chemotherapy among a large sample of patients with varied cancer types. Further research focused on risk factors for heightened levels of anxiety during chemotherapy may help point toward more effective interventions for this commonly experienced symptom.

Source of perceived social support and cognitive change: an 8-year prospective cohort study

Objectives:This study explored the longitudinal association between overall and individual sources of social support and global cognitive function in older adults. Methods: Data were drawn from three waves (2006, 2010 and 2014) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). The analytic sample included participants aged 65 and above who were married and had at least one child (N= 1319). Global cognitive function was measured through a 35-pointTelephone Interview Cognitive Screen (TICS). Perceived social support was measured via questions across four sources of support (spouse, child, otherfamily members, and friends). Analyses were conducted using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) with the addition of a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM). Results: There was no significant association between perceived overall social support and global cognitive function overtime (beta= -0.02, p =0.19). However, changes in perceived support from children were positively associated with changes in global cognition (beta= 0.05,p <0.01). In contrast, changes in perceived support from other family members were negatively associated with changes in cognitive function (beta= -0.07,p < 0.01) . Conclusions: Our findings highlight the importance of examining perceived social support from specific elements of one's social networks, rather than in an aggregated variable. Although the positive effect of perceived support from children may be small to moderate, the findings could provide a target for interventions to protect the cognitive function of older adults.

The influence of home-country resources and state ownership on subsidiary's performance: a multilevel perspective

PurposeAlthough emerging markets are distinctly known for the rapid growth and international expansion of their state-owned enterprises, little is known about the influence of parent resource advantages and mixed state ownership on a subsidiary's performance. Using the resource-based view, this study aims to investigate how resource advantages from the parent company and state ownership influence the performance of ***/methodology/approachThis study included a unique data set of 207 subsidiaries from 33 large Brazilian multinationals located in 32 countries from 2000 to 2015. The authors used a hierarchical linear modeling and a multilevel structure based on data at different levels to analyze the influence of home-country parent resource advantages and state ownership on host-country subsidiary's *** study illustrates that state ownership can alleviate the resource advantages of parent companies. Evidence is presented, indicating that low and medium degrees of state ownership have a negative impact on the resource advantages of the parent company, consequently reducing the subsidiary's performance. Moreover, this study highlights that low and medium degrees of state ownership lead to conflicting interests between state ownership and parent resource advantages, resulting in an overall decline in subsidiary ***/valueThis research contributes new evidence regarding state ownership and resource advantages to the field of international business studies and the domain of Latin American multinational enterprises, Multilatinas. The results suggest that low and medium levels of state ownership diminish the influx of resources from parent companies, thereby restricting the subsidiary's performance.

Text-to-Speech Technology and Math Performance: A Comparative Study of Students With Disabilities, English Language Learners, and Their General Education Peers

This study investigates the relationship between text-to-speech (TTS) usage and item-by-item performance in the 2017 eighth-grade National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) math assessment, focusing on students with disabilities (SWDs), English language learners (ELLs), and their general education (GE) peers. Results indicate that all students use TTS more for longer and more difficult math items as well as for multiple-choice or short-response formats. Among SWDs and GE students, lower math proficiency and higher perceived time pressure are linked to higher TTS usage. Moreover, among GE students, factors such as male gender, minority status, lower math persistence, and higher math interest and effort during testing contribute to higher TTS usage. TTS usage is positively associated with item performance for SWDs and ELLs who received extended time accommodations but not for those who did not receive such accommodations or for general education students. The study suggests that the time constraints of speeded digital assessments may limit the potential benefits of TTS for SWDs and ELLs in math problem-solving.

Examining student, parent, and school factors predicting science achievement using a multilevel approach: the case of Hong Kong from the Program for International Student Assessment 2015

This study utilizes the 2015 data from the Hong Kong sample of the Program for International Student Assessment to examine the relative importance of various factors on the science learning performance of Hong Kong students. Using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), we examined the effect of students' affective characteristics, involvement, and perceptions of science by parents and school environment on science achievement in Hong Kong. The results of HLM demonstrated that school characteristics explain 33% variance in science achievement, which indicates that school is a critical predicting factor in identifying science achievement. The findings highlighted that identifying as male, having high socioeconomic status (at the student and school levels), high self-efficacy, low test anxiety, less parental support, positive view of science by parents, more school resources, and less teacher autonomy positively influence the science achievement of students. In the final model, school-level predictors, such as disciplinary climate in science classes and teacher-directed science instruction, explained 58% of variance at the school level in positive directions. Lastly, the study discussed the implications of achievement gaps between gender and socioeconomic status and between parents and school influence.

Is the buyer really king? A meta-analysis of the buyer advantage in sales negotiation

This meta-analysis investigates the existence of a potential buyer advantage in economic outcomes of sales negotiations, i.e., greater mean buyer profit than seller profit. Role theory predicts such an advantage due to different role characteristics and behavioral prescriptions between buyers and sellers. Related research on heuristic decision-making comes to the same conclusions based on different loss- and gain framing due to role. This main effect, i.e., the buyer advantage, is expected to be context-dependent. Therefore, role context-related and negotiation advantage-related moderators are analyzed, which are expected to amplify or attenuate the main effect. Using a hierarchical linear modeling approach to meta-analysis, this study includes k = 669 effect sizes from 196 primary studies or data sources, amounting to N = 24,757 negotiation dyads. Per our prediction, buyers fare slightly better than sellers in sales negotiations, albeit this buyer advantage qualifies as rather small. The effect is attenuated when male sellers negotiate with female buyers, when negotiators are experienced professionals or MBA students, and when the negotiation setting is B2B. Well-known negotiation advantage variables (information, power, goal, first offer advantage) largely amplify or reverse the effect, depending on which side holds the negotiation advantage.

Does the sharing of leadership increase the coherence of a school's instructional framework?

PurposeExisting research suggests that organizational learning, jointly implemented by principals and teachers may reduce agency risks and improve school management effectiveness. However, research investigating how this process occurs is lacking. The relationship between school leaders promoting the involvement of teachers in school-wide processes focused on instructional improvement and the coherence characterizing a school's instructional program remains ***/methodology/approachThe authors identified shared instructional leadership and instructional coherence, as two key variables describing the process of organizational learning and the outcome of agency risk reduction. The authors employed hierarchical linear modeling to test the hypothesis that shared leaderships positively predicts differences among schools in instructional *** on a sample of 113 public high schools selected from a U.S. Midwestern state, the results confirm the *** limitations/implicationsThis study uses the existing theoretical and empirical findings to interpret the potential relationship between shared leadership and instructional coherence, and validates it through empirical data analysis. The findings expand the understanding of the shared leadership theory. Although the design of this study is strictly based on theoretical and empirical findings, and part of the purpose of the research is to find the reasons why shared leadership seems to be insignificant in some countries and regions, readers should still note that the sample source is American schools. NGSS-Designed Curriculum Materials for the Middle Grades: Results from a Study on Student Learning in Physical Science

A new generation of science curriculum materials is being developed and made widely available across K-12. These materials, along with their associated professional learning, are expected to play a pivotal role in transforming science instruction to meet the vision of A Framework for K-12 Science Education and the performance expectations of the Next Generation Science Standards. This study investigated one of the first widely available middle school curriculum programs designed for the NGSS, Amplify Science 6-8. The study team conducted a randomized experiment to examine the implementation and efficacy of the middle school curriculum program (materials plus teacher professional learning) for improving seventh grade students' learning in physical science. Findings show that students in schools where the program was implemented significantly outperformed peers in the comparison condition on an NGSS-focused physical science assessment. These findings underscore the importance of conducting additional research on NGSS-designed curriculum programs across other grade levels and within different science domains.

Exploring Patterns of Absenteeism from Prekindergarten Through Early Elementary School and Their Associations With Children's Academic Outcomes

Using statewide administrative data from a sample of children enrolled in public prekindergarten (pre-K) programs in Massachusetts, I examined heterogeneity in children's absenteeism patterns from pre-K to Grade 3 and linked these patterns to their Grade 3 academic outcomes. After latent class growth analysis, six absenteeism patterns emerged. The vast majority of children (85%) had consistently low absenteeism, and only a small percentage of children (1%) demonstrated consistently high absenteeism. Four patterns showed variation in absenteeism over time, with two characterized by high absenteeism in only the pre-K year, another with a peak during kindergarten, and a final one with rising absenteeism across grades. Children with always low absenteeism had higher average English language arts and math scores than did children in the other patterns, and children in the two high pre-K absenteeism patterns and peak in kindergarten pattern had higher math scores than those with rising and always high absenteeism patterns.
