This paper presents the average bit error rate (BER) performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing using two-layer and three-layer hierarchical modulation (HM) schemes in a multipath Rayleigh fading channel based on a 3GPP tapped delay line channel model. In HM, the basic information bits should be demodulated and decoded using all the users within a cell satisfying the BER requirement. Hence, we investigate non-uniform quadrature amplitude modulation constellations so that the loss in the required average received signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) satisfying the average BER of the basic information bits for HM is minimized compared to that using the original constellation with which only the basic information bits are transmitted. We also investigate the distance from a cell site in the coverage area for the information bits of each layer based on the path loss equations in the Urban Macro and Rural Macro scenarios in terms of the required average received SNR achieving the average BER of 10(-3).

Asymmetric data transmission is a challenge factor in wireless communication channel. In this paper, we study the issue of data processing in asymmetric data transmission from different sources in wireless communication channel, and propose a Joint hierarchical modulation and Network Coding (JHMNC) scheme. In the proposed scheme, the procedure of JHMNC is analyzed and compared with the traditional zero padding and Opportunistic User Selection (OUS) schemes which are the generally existed schemes in asymmetric data transmission in wireless channel, and the closed-form expressions of the End-to-End (E2E) Bit Error Rate (BER) for the aforementioned schemes are derived by analyzing the transmission of each node. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed scheme improves the BER performance without additional complexity compared with the traditional zero padding scheme, also can outperform OUS scheme in terms of the average throughput and the channel access probability.

In this paper, we study the performance of hybrid cognitive radio (CR) system in the presence of channel estimation error (CER) in terms of bit-error-probability (BEP) and outage probability. We assume simultaneous switching between the underlay and overlay modes of CR where in, the secondary user (SU) probabilistically accesses the primary user's (PU) channel in both underlay and overlay modes to utilize the benefits of hybrid CR system. The PU uses two-layer 2/4-ASK constellation with unequal level of bit protection against the interference imposed by the SU's transmitter. The SU wishes to opportunistically use the PU's channel to transmit its own data while maintaining the performance of the PU's layer with the worst level of protection at a desired value. We derive the SU's maximum allowable transmit power in the overlay mode to guarantee the PU reliable communication then, we discuss about the optimum value of the hybrid switching rate that minimizes the outage probability of the SU along with, deriving the exact BEP and outage probability expressions for the secondary system as well as that of the first and the second layers of the PU system.

This paper presents a new cooperation scheme, i.e. partial cooperation, in MB-OFDM UWB systems for performance enhancement with high throughput and power efficiency. We first take advantage of the available subbands and design an efficient scheme in the time-frequency plane to deliver information bits to the relay node. Then, based on Game Theory, we propose to use hierarchical modulation, which is capable to offer adaptability and flexibilities to attract even a busy relay node that keeps its own communication link participating in cooperation. We also obtain the optimal power allocation coefficients for the proposed partial cooperation scheme. In addition, the optimal constellation priority parameter of hierarchical modulation is also evaluated. Both analytic and simulation results show that the proposed partial cooperation scheme not only achieves performance enhancement but also can upgrade system utilities of both links to get a win-win solution.

In the next generation communication protocol "DVB-SH", it offers a new transmitting scheme based on the turbo code, OFDM modulation and 16QAM hierarchical modulation to increase the flexibility in the information delivery. This scheme is using hierarchical modulation to enhance the UE (user equipment) performance which is in the center of a sector and also ensure the basic service when UE move to the region of a sector. hierarchical modulation uses two different hit streams on to different constellation of the constellation map. This scheme ensures two different bit streams have corresponding BER performance and then bring on the flexibility to the transmitting service. The simulation results indicates that in the Rayleigh and Gaussian channel, this scheme can gain a very high BER performance of high priority bit stream, and in the high SNR, it can also gain a high BER performance of low priority bit stream.

Relays are typically used to convey information to users who are unable to decode the direct signal from the base station successfully. In the case where the users are able to successfully decode the direct signal without the help of relays, the use of the latter can only decrease their performance because they will consume, uselessly, additional resources. If, however, hierarchical modulation can also be jointly used, the overall performance of a relay-based system can be enhanced even if the users are able to decode the direct signal successfully, without the need for relays. And this is the rationale behind this paper where we study the joint use of hierarchical modulation and relays, and model such a setting for a dynamic user configuration at the flow level. We validate our model against simulations and quantify the gains thus achieved in comparison with a system without relays, with and without hierarchical modulation.

We develop a scheme to improve data throughput for multiuser cooperative relay communications operating in half-duplex mode. Cooperative relay, while effective in mitigating fading effects, might reduce the overall throughput of the network since it requires additional resources for relay. In order to overcome this limitation, we develop a multiuser cooperative communication scheme that employs hierarchical modulation. This scheme exploits the different fading conditions for each user and allows the system to transmit two independent data streams simultaneously. Since the bit-error rate of the proposed system is a function of the distance parameters of hierarchical modulation, transmission reliability can be controlled flexibly by varying the distance parameter. We derive the error-rate expressions of the proposed scheme and compare its symbol-error rate performance for specific distance parameters with that of conventional relay schemes.

Using hierarchical modulation technology is very prevalence in existing digital broadcast system, such as satellite TV. A video source can be split into two streams, one stream is called basic stream, the other is called enhance stream. The basic stream contains high-priority information, it can offer basic visual effect, while the enhance stream contains low-priority information, it can make the visual effect much better. So the hierarchical modulation (superposition coding) consists of a basic constellation and a enhance constellation, but the fact is that basic constellation and enhance constellation will be to influence each other. Analysis will be performed to find an optimum hierarchical modulation's demodulation algorithm so as to keep the mutual influence to the minimum and let almost receivers can get good reception in larger coverage.

This work shows exemplary applications for combining the hierarchical modulation of DVB-H with the recently approved scalable extension of H.264/AVC (SVC). Although hierarchical modulation is an essential part of the DVB-H standard, it did receive little attention up to now. Compared to a standard modulation scheme, using hierarchical modulation can show a significant gain either in terms of bit-rate or required transmission power. Since with hierarchical modulation the channel capacity is spread over two independent multiplexes, a typical single layer video codec like H.264/AVC cannot fully utilize the given advantages. The combination with Scalable Video Coding (SVC) allows for both introducing new features in a backward compatible way and optimally utilizing the total channel capacity. Three exemplary applications for Mobile TV show, that the combination of the hierarchical modulation and SVC can show a significant benefit compared to current systems.

Real-time communication in underwater environments is essential for a variety of applications, including exploration, conservation, and construction. However, transmitting compressed video streams across various conditions is challenging due to high-frequency attenuation, time-varying Doppler, multipath propagation, and inconsistent throughput. To address these issues and allow for continuous image transmission in rapidly changing channel conditions we propose a communication system that utilizes advanced signal processing techniques, including an adaptive decision feedback equalizer with a circular array, and low-density parity-check channel coding. The use of hierarchical modulation theoretically has been shown to be beneficial for continuous image transmission due to its flexibility in deciding the image quality at the receiver based on the channel conditions. hierarchical modulation was investigated to see if it can demonstrate the benefits when compared to standard 16-QAM, in an underwater acoustic channel. The proposed system is tested in the dynamic environment of the North Sea, with Doppler velocities of up to 3 knots at a vertical depth of 100 m. The system is used to transmit still images, where the receiver can decide whether the greyscale or colour image is recoverable. Our approach demonstrates a reliable and efficient communication link, achieving transmission of continuous images with rates up to 100 kb/s while compensating for Doppler shifts in a noisy, multi-reverberating environment utilising a hierarchical modulation scheme.
