A hierarchy model to use local resources by DSO and TSO in the balancing market

Due to the increasing penetration level of local generating resources at the distribution network, the transmission system operator (TSO) and distribution system operators (DSOs) need to coordinate their operations to use these resources and provide the required energy and regulation for the power system. This work proposes a hierarchy model for scheduling the local flexible resources at the distribution and transmission levels. In the first stage, the optimal bidding strategy of balance service providers (BSPs) and the distribution balancing market-clearing problem are formulated by a bi-level optimization problem, respectively. At this stage, the lower-level subproblem is replaced by the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, and the bi-level problem is formulated as a mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) problem. Results of the first stage are considered as fixed parameters for the second stage problem, which specifies the feasible bids of local resources that the TSO can dispatch. At the second stage, DSO checks the feasibility of remaining bids, which are not dispatched in the distribution balancing market, and determines the maximum regulation capability of the local resources that the TSO can use. Simulation results indicate that in the IEEE 33-bus distribution test system with the total imbalance energy of 4.672 MWh, 32.36% and 67.64% of the required power are compensated by transmission balancing market and local resources, which results in a reduction of 24.32% in balancing costs.

In engineering practice, the compressive strength of concrete of the same strength grade at different positions of a structure is usually treated either as perfectly correlated or as completely independent random variables. However, due to the common factors affecting the randomness, e.g., the mix proportion, placing, consolidating, curing, etc., such treatment is unreasonable and consequently the results may be misleading. In this paper, a hierarchy model is adopted to describe the variability of the constitutive parameters of concrete in a structure. In this model, the total variability of the constitutive parameters of concrete in a structure is separated according to the contributing factors on four hierarchies: the hierarchy of structure, of floor, of component and of representative volume element (RVE). By this model, the correlation between components and that between floors can be captured. In addition, based on a large number of test complete compressive stress-strain curves, the copulabased joint probability distribution of the constitutive parameters of concrete crossing multiple strength grades is given. Combining this joint distribution with the hierarchy model, the compressive constitutive parameters of concrete in a reinforced concrete (RC) structure can be obtained. Then the stochastic response analysis of a 6story RC frame subjected to seismic ground motion is conducted. The results show that the variability of concrete on the hierarchy of floor has a non-negligible impact on the structural response, whereas the variability of concrete on the hierarchy of component and that of RVE may be ignored. In addition, it is found that only considering the variability of concrete on the hierarchy of structure will underestimate the variability of structural response and seriously overestimate the reliability of structure. Multi-projects are quite common in industries, especially in made-to-order enterprises. These projects usually require limited local or global resources distributed and controlled by different departments. The scheduling problem for this kind of multi-projects is known as distributed resource constrained multiprojects scheduling problem (DRCMPSP). It is difficult to resolve the conflict of interest between different departments during scheduling. In this paper, a new hierarchy model using heuristic method based on priority rules for solving the problem. The decision making process is supposed to be hierarchical and decentralized, with one global decision maker and as many local decision makers as the resources managers. The difference between the method proposed and other hierarchical methods is that its decision stages and makers are divided from the department or manager, not from projects. It can achieve the benefit coordination between project managers and resources managers, and thus generate the overall optimal scheduling.

Although Internet addiction has been widely reported as a problematic phenomenon, Internet addiction disorder has still not been officially recognized as a form of behavioral disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical of Manual of Mental Disorders. Nonetheless, studies of Internet addiction have received increased attention from professionals and scientists who find that excessive use of the Internet can lead to detrimental effects on an individual's life. This study aims to take another new look at Internet Addiction. We view internet addiction as a process which involves different stages. We also take a position that current measurement of internet addiction can involve measurement of antecedents or outcomes of Internet addiction. Additionally, we believe that internet addiction, which we define as excessive use of the Internet, can have both negative and positive impacts depending on the activities and the amount of time individuals are spending on the Internet.

An intelligent decision-making system for assembly process planning based on machine learning considering the variety of assembly unit and assembly process

Current assembly process planning of complex products depends mainly on existing process templates and the experience of technical personnel, resulting in low design efficiency, poor process pertinence, low intelligence, and difficulty to extract the assembly knowledge. To address these problems, this paper proposes an intelligent decision-making system for complex products assembly process planning based on the machine learning (ML) method, providing a targeted decision-making scheme with an assembly process structure tree. The characteristics, variations, and similarities of the assembly process for complex products were analyzed. A hierarchical model of the product assembly process is established, based on which the assembly process decision-making for overall structure is decomposed into several units. Then, an intelligent decision-making model for new product assembly process planning was constructed through ML by considering the variability of component composition of different product models and existing product assembly data. Based on these, an optimized decision-making model was established through a swarm intelligence algorithm that automatically optimizes the initial weight, threshold, learning rate, and feedback process, improving the decision efficiency and accuracy of system. To validate the system, the intelligent decision-making assembly process was conducted on a cylinder cap as a case study, and the system capability is discussed in terms of ML performance and industrial applicability.

Purpose: Despite several initiatives taken by government of India since 2013 to improve the performance of major ports, growth was not as anticipated. Hence, there is a need to understand the performance of these major ports during 2013-2020 and to identify the critical challenges that affect their performance. Design/methodology/approach: Performance analysis was conducted using Malmquist productivity index (MPI) and critical challenges were identified using interpretive structural modelling (ISM) technique as well as the cross-impact matrix multiplication (MICMAC).Findings: Ten major ports in terms of operational, 12 ports in terms of service quality, and six ports in terms of financial performance have been categorised as high performers, based on the MPI values. 19 challenges affecting the performance were identified in an eight layered ISM model. Research limitations: This research is limited to major ports of India and does not cover the non-major ports of India due to unavailability of dataPractical implications: This study will enable the port decision-makers to identify the ports which are high performers in terms of operational, service quality, and financial performance, and thereby the best practices followed across can be replicated. Originality/value: This study explored the multi dimensions of performance of Major ports of India and there was no such study in the past. Understanding the slow diffusion of alternative delivery systems using interpretive structural modelling

The slow uptake of the alternative delivery systems (ADSs) can potentially waste an astronomical amount of precious public funds that can be used to meet other critical needs (e.g. education and healthcare). The existing literature mainly focussed on performance evaluation of the ADSs and few provided decision support to select ADSs matching a particular project's characteristics or external environment. Nonetheless, there lacks of research exploring the slow diffusion of ADSs, especially a deep understanding of the interaction mechanisms of the influencing factors. This research aims to increase the use of ADSs in practice. To achieve the objective, based on the data retrieved from literature, case study and interviews, this study, therefore, aims to: identify the internal and external influencing factors;reveal the interplays of these factors using interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and analyse the driving and dependence power of the factors based on Matrice d'Impacts Croises-Multiplication Appliquee a un Classement analysis (MICMAC). Based on the 25 identified factors, the ISM built a hierarchical structural model, which reveals the interaction mechanism of the factors and the fundamental factors. The MICMAC analysis discovered the high driving, high dependent, transitive/linkage and independent factors on the diffusion of ADSs. The findings contribute to the body of knowledge about what and how the factors influencing the slow diffusion of ADSs and help contractor administrators formulate effective strategies to improve the usage of ADSs.

Hazardous waste landfill site selection in Western Ghana: An integration of multi-criteria decision analysis and geographic information system

Most cities in developing countries are fast industrialising, leading to an increased hazardous waste generation. Though disposal occupies the bottom of the waste management hierarchy, it is an important component of the waste management chain, requiring greater focus to mitigate its environmental and human health effects. The selection of a hazardous waste landfill site is a complex decision-making process since it requires the consideration of several laws and regulations and the integration of various data. This study presents a multi-criteria decision analysis for selecting hazardous waste landfill sites in Western Ghana. Thirty-two evaluation criteria arranged according to four hierarchy levels were selected for the study. The selected criteria considered geo-environmental, economic and social factors. Twenty-one intermediate suitability maps were created, which were then aggregated to produce a composite landfill suitability map of the study area. To narrow down the search for space for landfill sites, optimality criteria were applied on the composite suitable map to select the best locations for landfill. The application of the optimality criteria led to the selection of 5% of the study area as optimal for landfill sites. However, the final decision for landfill site selection will require further in situ studies. Overall, this research provides a proven landfill site selection methodology, which provides essential support for decision-makers.

Purpose - Consumers have the multiple options to choose their products and services, which have a significant impact on the pattern of consumer decision making in digital market and further increases the challenges for the service providers to predict their buying pattern. In this sense, the purpose of this paper is to propose a structural hierarchy model for analyzing the changing pattern of consumer decision making in digital market by taking an Indian context. Design/methodology/approach - To accomplish the objectives, the research is conducted in two phases. An extensive literature review is performed in the first phase to list the factors related to the changing pattern of consumer decision making in digital market and then fuzzy Delphi method is applied to finalize the factors. In the second phase, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is employed to find the priority weights of finalized factors. The fuzzy set theory allows capturing the vagueness in the data. Findings - The findings obtained in this study shows that consumers are much conscious about innovative and trendy products as well as brand and quality;therefore, the service providers must think about these two most important factors so that they can able to retain their consumer in their online portal. Practical implications - The analysis shows that "innovative and trendy" is the first priority factor for the consumers followed by "brand and quality" and "fulfilment and time energy." The proposed model can help the marketers and service providers in predicting customers' preferences and their changing pattern efficiently under vague surroundings. The outcomes of this research work not only help the service provider to update their products and services according to consumers' needs but can also help them to increase profit and minimize their risk. In the process industries, steady state operation consumes the most part of the operating cost. The overall process system is typically implemented by a hierarchy model with various layers. The steady state optimization layer obtains the optimal setpoints based on a nonlinear model of the process. The optimal setpoints are implemented by means of the model predictive control layer. In this paper, the null space method is presented to integrate steady state optimization and model predictive control in the presence of expected and unexpected disturbances. Through using null space method to select the controlled variables as a combination of the measurements, the main advantage is to reduce the need for frequent setpoint changes as well as reject both expected and unexpected disturbances. An example is presented to illustrate the superiority of the proposed method.
