There is a rapidly growing, cross-domain demand for interactive, high-quality visualization techniques as components of web-based applications and systems. In this context, a key question is how visualization services can be designed, implemented, and operated based on Software-as-a-Service as software delivery model. In this paper, we present concepts and design of a SaaS framework and API of visualization techniques for tree-structured data, called HiVISER. Using representational state transfer (REST). the API supports different data formats, data manipulations, visualization techniques, and output formats. In particular, the API defines base resource types for all components required to create an image or a virtual scene of a hierarchy visualization. We provide a treemap visualization service as prototypical implementation for which subtypes of the proposed API resourceshave been created. The approach generally serves as a blue-print for fully web-based, high-end visualization services running on thin clients in a standard browser environment.

Through their recursive definition, many fractals have an inherent hierarchical structure. An example are binary branching Pythagoras Trees. By stopping the recursion in certain branches, a binary hierarchy can be encoded and visualized. But this binary encoding is an obstacle for representing general hierarchical data such as file systems or phylogenetic trees, which usually branch into more than two subhierarchies. We hence extend Pythagoras Trees to arbitrarily branching trees by adapting the geometry of the original fractal approach. Each vertex in the hierarchy is visualized as a rectangle sized according to a metric. We analyze several visual parameters such as length, width, order, and color of the nodes against the use of different metrics. Interactions help to zoom, browse, and filter the hierarchy. The usefulness of our technique is illustrated by two case studies visualizing directory structures and a large phylogenetic tree. We compare our approach with existing tree diagrams and discuss questions of geometry, perception, readability, and aesthetics.

The power of interactively linked hierarchy visualizations

This paper describes an interactive web-based tool for visualizing hierarchical data including the recently developed concept of space-reclaiming icicle plots and several more traditional hierarchy visualizations. The tool provides ways to upload, share, explore, and compare hierarchical data using a multitude of different linked hierarchy visualizations. The current version supports up to eight hierarchy visualizations, focusing on user-friendly interactive navigation by a dynamic graphical user interface with a variety of functions while each visualization is interactive by itself. Moreover, color deficiency issues are taken into account in the tool, further improving the usability for this user group. All of the visualizations can be shown in linked views while typical hierarchy parameters and visual variables can be changed on user demand. The interactive tool makes use of OpenGL and Angular, an industry standard JavaScript platform, and runs in a web browser. We illustrate the usefulness of the visualization tool by applying it to the NCBI taxonomy that consists of more than 300,000 hierarchically organized species while filtering for the tetrapoda subhierarchy as an application example. To further test the usability of the tool we did a performance test with increasing sizes of processed hierarchy datasets and even support a GPU implementation. Also user feedback on the eight visualizations was collected. Finally, we explain implementation details and discuss limitations and scalability issues of the linked visualization techniques.

In this paper we describe a web-based tool combining several hierarchy visualization techniques. Those run in a browser and support the communication of hierarchy data that is omnipresent in many application fields like biology, software engineering, sports, or in algorithmic approaches like hierarchical clustering. To this end we provide node-link diagrams, Pythagoras trees, circular, as well as 3D treemaps also called 3D step-trees to give several visual perspectives on the same data and to improve data exploration tasks. The visualizations are interactive and linked, while the tool is available online, making it easily accessible for people all around the world without installing extra software or relying on additional libraries and frameworks. hierarchy datasets can be uploaded to a server and shared with others. The visualizations were primarily implemented using JavaScript, and more specifically, rendered using the *** library. We illustrate the usefulness of the interactive visualization by applying them to the NCBI taxonomy and the Influenza dataset.

This article reiterates on the recently presented hierarchy visualization service HiViSer and its API [51]. It illustrates its decomposition into modular services for data processing and visualization of tree-structured data. The decomposition is aligned to the common structure of visualization pipelines [48] and, in this way, facilitates attribution of the services' capabilities. Suitable base resource types are proposed and their structure and relations as well as a subtyping concept for specifics in hierarchy visualization implementations are detailed. Moreover, state-of-the-art quality standards and techniques for self-documentation and discovery of components are incorporated. As a result, a blueprint for Web service design, architecture, modularization, and composition is presented, targeting fundamental visualization tasks of tree-structured data, i.e., gathering, processing, rendering, and provisioning. Finally, the applicability of the service components and the API is evaluated in the context of exemplary applications.

We present a novel type of circular treemap, where we intentionally allocate extra space for additional visual variables. With this extended visual design space, we encode hierarchically structured data along with their uncertainties in a combined diagram. We introduce a hierarchical and force-based circle-packing algorithm to compute Bubble Treemaps, where each node is visualized using nested contour arcs. Bubble Treemaps do not require any color or shading, which offers additional design choices. We explore uncertainty visualization as an application of our treemaps using standard error and Monte Carlo-based statistical models. To this end, we discuss how uncertainty propagates within hierarchies. Furthermore, we show the effectiveness of our visualization using three different examples: the package structure of Flare, the S&P 500 index, and the US consumer expenditure survey.

VisUPI: visual analytics for University Personality Inventory data

It is a feasible way to investigate the mental health status of college students through University Personality Inventory (UPI). However, the analysis of original UPI data is a difficult and tedious task, because the traditional software always requires the users to select and reload slices of data by hand. Also, the limited constant functions provided by the software cannot meet the various requirements of domain experts. In this paper, we propose VisUPI, a specialized visualization framework for UPI datasets, aiming at an in-depth analysis of the mental health status of college students. A circular view is firstly designed to layout the questionnaires and visualize the answers of individuals. Then, a decision tree model is employed to classify the investigated students, and a radial hierarchy chart is designed to present the relationship of different groups of students. According to the prior knowledge of UPI, we restructure the network relationship of specified questionnaires, and use the force-directed model to layout the questionnaires, enabling users to better perceive the answers of those students with serious mental health problems. Furthermore, multi-dimensional scaling is used to visualize the dissimilarity between different questionnaires, and the statistical answers are presented through bar charts in detail. Finally, the effectiveness and scalability of VisUPI are demonstrated through case studies with the real-world datasets and the domain-expert interviews.

We propose a tree visualization technique for comparison of structures and attributes across multiple hierarchies. Many software systems are structured hierarchically by design. For example, developers subdivide source code into libraries, modules, and functions. This design propagates to software configuration and business processes, rendering software hierarchies even more important. Often these structural elements are attributed with reference counts, code quality metrics, and the like. Throughout the entire software life cycle, these hierarchies are reviewed, integrated, debugged, and changed many times by different people so that the identity of a structural element and its attributes is not clearly traceable. We argue that pairwise comparison of similar trees is a tedious task due to the lack of overview, especially when applied to a large number of hierarchies. Therefore, we strive to visualize multiple similar trees as a whole by merging them into one supertree. To merge structures and combine attributes from different trees, we leverage the Jaccard similarity and solve a matching problem while keeping track of the origin of a structure element and its attributes. Our visualization approach allows users to inspect these supertrees using node-link diagrams and indented tree plots. The nodes in these plots depict aggregated attributes and, using word-sized line plots, detailed data. We demonstrate the usefulness of our method by exploring the evolution of software repositories and debugging data processing pipelines using provenance data.

Oftentimes we come across information that is organized as a tree structure. visualization of large trees is challenging because of the limited space available on computer displays. In this work we explore 3D space as an alternative that intends to maximize the available space on the screen. We developed Den3D, an interactive web-based multi-user 3D environment that implements cone trees for the visualization and management of hierarchies in the domain of biological taxonomies. In addition to its visualization capabilities, a novel editing functionality was introduced for users to flexibly create and maintain their own taxonomies. Volume tests were performed to determine size limits for the deployment of hierarchies. Additionally, a user study with high school science and biology teachers was conducted to assess the potential of Den3D to support biodiversity education.
