The present work is part of a larger effort to build a competitively performant, distributed-memory parallel, 3-D Euler flow solver in Chapel using the Flux Reconstruction (FR) method. The solver developed in this work has been validated through comparisons of flow solutions to standard CFD test cases, i.e., the Ringleb flow and a subsonic flow over a NACA 0012 airfoil. The tests performed demonstrate the accuracy and correctness of the FR method implementation for resolving critical 2-D benchmark problems and of the Chapel programming language as a viable alternative to the traditional MPI approach. These experiments served as a proof-of-concept for the current effort to expand the solver capabilities to 3-D flow cases and distributed memory parallelism.

Understanding, characterizing and tuning scientific applications' I/O behavior is an increasingly complicated process in HPC systems. Existing tools use either offline profiling or online analysis to get insights into the applications' I/O patterns. However, there is lack of a clear formula to characterize applications' I/O. Moreover, these tools are application specific and do not account for multi-tenant systems. This paper presents Vidya, an I/O profiling framework which can predict application's I/O intensity using a new formula called Code-Block I/O Characterization (CIOC). Using CIOC, developers and system architects can tune an application's I/O behavior and better match the underlying storage system to maximize performance. Evaluation results show that Vidya can predict an application's I/O intensity with a variance of 0.05%. Vidya can profile applications with a high accuracy of 98% while reducing profiling time by 9x. We further show how Vidya can optimize an application's I/O time by 3.7x.

We assess the performance of two iterative mesh optimization algorithms for generating high-order, metric-conforming meshes appropriate for use with high-order, finite-element methods. The three key steps in these metric-based approaches are: 1) obtain the desired high-order, Riemannian metric field, 2) generate a linear, metric-conforming mesh, and 3) place the high-order geometry nodes such that the mesh-implied metric conforms to the desired metric field. The procedure to obtain the desired high-order metric field is similar to the Mesh Optimization via Error Sampling and Synthesis (MOESS) developed by Yano(1) for linear meshes. In this work, we consider two approaches to obtain the desired, higher-order metric field: 1) performing MOESS on a refined mesh, and 2) extending native MOESS to high-order MOESS (HOMES). The mesh regeneration procedures used to obtain the metric-conforming property are also described in detail. The accuracy benefits offered by these two proposed algorithms are presented for a series of one-dimensional problems. A two-dimensional proof of concept is also provided to establish the value of extending the proposed metric-based optimization algorithm to higher dimensions and to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed mesh regeneration procedure in higher dimensions.

Traditionally, airfoil design has been broadly limited to experimental and empirical methods. Over the years, computing power has grown exponentially and computational methods are becoming increasingly relevant. Still, generic airfoils continue to be used in most applications. Such airfoils yield sub-optimal performance and result in compromises in the overall design of the aircraft. With the advent of modern high-performance computing systems and metaheuristic optimization algorithms, optimizing airfoils for their specific use cases has become highly feasible. This paper presents a novel optimization framework for airfoils using the Invasive Weed Optimisation algorithm. The presented framework can be implemented using single or multiple objectives with the multi-objective functionality being realized through integration with NSGA-II. Additionally, this framework has the unique ability to operate in two fidelity modes in order to cater to a range of computational capabilities. The low fidelity mode is coupled with XFOIL while the high fidelity mode utilizes a RANS CFD solver on OpenFOAM. To depict the prowess of this framework, two test cases have been shown. The resulting optimized airfoils perform exceedingly well in their use case as compared to conventional airfoils, thereby validating the efficacy of this framework.

In high performance computing systems running on native hardware or cloud computing resources, parallel applications can reserve a large number of resources for long time periods. Resource failures trigger the failure of applications using this resource. Our investigation of large-scale systems in the field has revealed a difference in the operational reliability of nodes. By adding awareness of this difference to the scheduler along with the predicted reliability needs, we match reliable resources with the most demanding applications to reduce the probability of application failure. In this paper, we describe a new approach we developed to enhance reliability and reduce failure costs. Our approach partitions resources based on expected reliability and sizes each partition to bound the probability of blocking requests. Our approach can be used to size systems for peak loads with a bounded probability of blocking requests, and would be useful for operators seeking to improve the reliability and efficiency of systems.

We propose a new structure for multilevel pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signal generation for on-chip optical interconnects and data center networks. Our proposed architecture use only one 3 x 3 multimode interference (MMI) Based ring resonator with two segmented phase shifters. Two segmented phase shifters applied the plasma dispersion effect in silicon waveguide are used in the feedback ring resonator waveguide. The structure provides a very steep slope compared with the conventional structure based on Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZM). As a result, an extreme reduction of power consumption is achieved. Based on this structure, an extreme high bandwidth and compact footprint are also achieved. The device is designed and analyzed using the Beam Propagation Method (BPM) integrated with the Finite Difference-Time Difference (FDTD) simulations.

Tiltrotors, like the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey, have a distinct advantage functioning as a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft. Its ability to outrun conventional helicopters and still operate in hover makes it uniquely qualified for many missions. The rotor/airframe interactions produce complex flow fields that, to a large extent, have been understood with high-quality wind tunnel and flight-test data. Advances in high performance computing systems and CFD software make it possible to improve the understanding of the aerodynamics. Complementary simulations fill in the gaps between data points and add supplemental information to existing test conditions. The HPCMP CREATE-AV Helios software was used to model the V-22 at various wheel heights above the ground and at several gross weights to first, replicate hover in-ground effect performance as measured in several flight tests and second, to understand aircraft download as a function of wheel height, rotor thrust, aircraft pitch attitude, and light winds. The results correlate well to flight test power data and simulations quantify hover performance sensitivity to deck angle and winds. The simulations suggest deck angle should remain level with winds less than 3 knots to obtain consistent hover flight test measurements.

high performance computing systems have shown an impressive growth so far with a performance increase of 10x every 3.6 years. performance predictions seem to confirm this trend for the future: Roadrunner achieved 1 petaFLOPS in 2008 and 10 petaFLOPS system are expected to be operational in the next few years. If these predictions are correct, exascale performance will be achieved by 2018. Power consumption is increasing at a faster rate than performance, which is making HPC not sustainable with current technologies. A DARPA [1] study states that exascale systems will be limited to a total power budget of 20-25 MW: in order to achieve 1 exaFLOPS, HPC systems have to provide 40 GLOPS/W, two orders of magnitude higher than the current fastest supercomputer. It seems clear that current technologies will not provide such efficiency and that there are new research challenges and opportunities on the way to the exascale era. This paper shows how a closer hardware/software interaction can improve HPC system's efficiency. New technologies will provide better power management but will also slow down applications. System software, on the other hand, can detect applications behavior and trigger the most effective hardware mechanisms without introducing excessive performance degradation.

This proposal describes a hardware-software interface which can put into effect a practically unlimited number of processing resources and which allows for completely describing and exploiting the inherent parallelism of the application problems. Appropriate hardware consists of processing resources, platform resources, and storage means. The particular processing resource is not a complete processor but some kind of a comparatively simple operation unit. The proposed architectural principles may lead to: Instruction set architectures which can cope with a trans-finite number of hardware resources. Processing circuits containing resources of intermediate granularity and appropriately optimized interconnects.

Accurate estimates of aerodynamic loads are required to certify the safe carriage of external stores on aircraft. Reduced-order models have the potential to provide faster load estimates than traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods while maintaining sufficient accuracy. In this paper, two reduced-order models are created from a training set of CFD simulations, generated by CREATE-AV's Kestrel CFD solver. These models are created using stepwise regression system identification and proper-orthogonal decomposition. The accuracy of each model is compared to direct CFD simulations at flight conditions not included in the training set.
