Our daily lives are expected to change dramatically due to the popularity of ubiquitous computing technologies. These will make it possible to integrate various aspects of our lives. However, a hew approach is required to seamlessly deal with devices embedded in our environments. Future embedded systems will embody a new approach that will take into account a variety of new issues, for example, spontaneous interaction, personalization, privacy protection, and interoperability. In this paper, we propose a personal home server that will make it possible to coordinate home appliances. Since everyone will have a different personal home server, it will allow us to personalize how the appliances are used according to individual preferences. Our personal home server can seamlessly discover and configure appliances at any locations, such as at railroad stations, cars, and streets as well as houses. We also discuss its design and implementation and present its current status.

Broadcast teletext, as operated by the broadcasting authoriities in the UK has been available as a public service since 1974. As well as being an efficient means of decoding and displaying textual data, it was soon realised that the standard teletext decoder already contained many of the components required for a home computer: it has a character-generator for visual- display; a page-store, and a very convenient numeric keypad for data-entry. With the addition of a few other components, the result is quite a powerful stand-alone computer right inside the TV set. By utilising the teletext system to broadcast programs for such a terminal, a user needs only to select the teletext pages containing a desired program; once this has been read in, it may be loaded and executed by the terminal microprocessor without the need for expensive-storage peripherals, telephone lines or special knowledge by the user.

This study explores digital equity by examining gender and socioeconomic differences in students' use of computers at home. It presents research findings of a territory-wide survey of 825 eighth-graders from 36 secondary schools in Hong Kong. Results of MANOVAs and ANOVAs indicate significant socioeconomic and gender effects on the home computing of students, including (1) socioeconomic difference in access and hours of computer use, learning-related use and parental mediation in guidance and (2) gender difference in learning-related use, and parental mediation in guidance and worry. No interaction effect was observed. The research provides empirical evidence that will stimulate discussion on issues regarding digital equity and students' home computing.

Currently, many companies have been working to build home servers that manage home appliances in our houses. However, the approach is not appropriate for future ubiquitous computing environments because it is very difficult to allow us to use home appliances in a seamless way when we move at several places. The UPnP technology is widely employed to enable networked devices interconnected in home computing environments. The UPnP eventing protocol on top of HTTP over TCP performs in a unicast manner, however, suffering from scalability problem and performance degradation against highly frequent event notifications. This paper devises an efficient event multicast mechanism to mitigate above circumstances. The proposed mechanism can group service subscribers of the same access interest and synchronously inform all subscribers in a group of event notifications through a specific administratively scoped multicast delivery. Its design is compliable with GENA specification and so is able to coexist with the original UPnP eventing method. The experimental prototype shows that this mechanism is lightweight and does not complicate the UPnP system design.

In the future, microprocessors will be embedded in various appliances such as home appliances, digital AV appliances, and personal appliances. These appliances will be connected to various types of networks, such as Internet, and communicate with each other The communication of appliances would integrate some services provided by these appliances and make new services. The future home computing environment requires home computing middleware on which we can control home appliances easily and develop new services without a great effort. Most of recent middleware for home computing such as Jini and HAVi has no compatibility and adaptability with each other Therefore it is not easy for these appliances to communicate with other appliances which are controlled by any other middleware. Although there are some protocol bridges such as bridge between HAVi and Jini by Philips, Sony and Sun, these are almost only bridges of one and one. We need a framework with which we can integrate any middleware in a simpler way. In this paper, we propose a framework for connecting home computing middleware. It enables any appliance under any middleware's control to communicate any other appliances. We show also a service integration framework with Internet service and home computing middleware.
