Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to optimize the fusion zone grain size and hardness using hooke and jeeves algorithm. Design/methodology/approach - Experiments are conducted as per four factors, five levels response surface method based central composite design matrix. Empirical relations for predicting grain size and harness are developed. The effect of welding variables on grain size and hardness are studies. Grain size and hardness are optimised using hooke and jeeves algorithm. Findings - The developed empirical relations can be effectively used to predict grain size and hardness values of micro plasma arc welded Inconel 625 sheets. The values of grain size and hardness obtained by hooke and jeeves algorithm matches with experimental values with great accuracy. Research limitations/implications - The developed mathematical models are valid for 0.25mm thick Inconel 625 sheets only. Practical implications - In the present paper only four important factors namely peak current, back current, pulse rate and pulse width are considered, however one may consider other parameters like plasma gas flow rate, shielding gas flow rate, etc. Originality/value - The present work is very much useful to sheet metal industries manufacturing metal bellows, diaphragms, etc.

Greedy algorithms are the major algorithmic approaches to sparse signal reconstruction from an incomplete set of linear measurements. All the greedy algorithms involve solving linear least-square problems. This is usually implemented via CGLS. Though CGLS uses a fixed number of iterations, experiments confirm that CGLS costs more than 50 percent of the total running time of greedy algorithms. In order to reduce the running time, we introduce a method called HJLS, which applies hooke and jeeves algorithm to solve the least-square problems. As the columns of the measurement matrix are nearly orthogonal, HJLS also converges in a fixed number of iterations. Comparative experiments between HJLS and CGLS show that the number of iterations used in HJLS is fewer and implementing HJLS instead of CGLS reduces the total running time of greedy algorithms by more than 20 percent.

Discrete hybrid PSO algorithm for design of laminate composites with multiple objectives

This article presents a multi-objective discrete hybrid adaptive swarm intelligence algorithm for combinatorial optimization and applied for design optimization of fiber-reinforced composite structures. An approach is presented in this article to integrate a Pareto dominance concept into the adaptive PSO algorithm developed earlier by the first author in order to handle multi-objective optimization problems. In fact, a hybrid version of the adaptive PSO algorithm is now proposed in this article for multi-objective optimization by integrating with discrete as well as continuous neighborhood search algorithms. Further, an external archive technique is also integrated in order to collect the historical Pareto optimal solutions. The design constraints are handled in this article by treating them as additional objectives. Numerical studies have been carried out through the optimization of a hybrid fiber-reinforced composite plate, laminate composite cylindrical shell, and also a pressure vessel problem with varied number of design objectives. Standard performance metrics are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed multi-objective hybrid PSO algorithm with both discrete as well as continuous neighborhood search algorithms. Studies clearly favor hybrid PSO with variable-depth neighborhood search algorithm. Finally, comparisons have also been made with other popular evolutionary algorithms like NSGA-II, PAES, Micro-GA, and SPEA2 to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid multi-objective PSO algorithm.

Analog filter pair design on the basis of a gyrator-capacitor prototype circuit

The paper presents an algorithmic approach to a low-sensitivity design strategy for analog filter pairs based on a gyratorcapacitor prototype circuit. The general structure of the prototype circuit is proposed. It assumed that the generic structure of the prototype circuit can evolve, with the use of additional gyrators, into a circuit with increased redundancy. It is shown that symbolic analysis of the prototype circuit, used to formulate a set of nonlinear algebraic equations, is necessary to achieve a sufficiently high algorithm operation speed. To find a solution to this specific system of nonlinear algebraic equations, different numerical methods are compared. The modified hooke and jeeves algorithm is found to be the most effective. The elaborated algorithms and programs are illustrated with the seventh-order filter pair example. The obtained filter is better than the filter obtained using LC ladder structures with respect to chip area and power consumption, and these improvements are obtained without loss of sensitivity properties. Optimizing Friction Stir Welding Parameters to Maximize Tensile Strength of AA2219 Aluminum Alloy Joints

AA2219 aluminium alloy (Al-Cu-Mn alloy) has gathered wide acceptance in the fabrication of lightweight structures requiring a high strength-to-weight ratio and good corrosion resistance. In contrast to the fusion welding processes that are routinely used for joining structural aluminium alloys, the friction stir welding (FSW) process is an emerging solid state joining process in which the material that is being welded does not melt and recast. This process uses a non-consumable tool to generate frictional heat in the abutting surfaces. The welding parameters such as tool rotational speed, welding speed, axial force etc., and the tool pin profile play a major role in determining the joint strength. An attempt has been made here to develop a mathematical model to predict the tensile strength of friction stir welded AA2219 aluminium alloy by incorporating FSW process parameters. A central composite design with four factors and five levels has been used to minimize the number of experimental conditions. The response surface method (RSM) has been used to develop the model. The developed mathematical model has been optimized using the hooke and jeeves search technique to maximize the tensile strength of the friction stir welded AA2219 alluminium alloy joints.

Application of an heuristic procedure to solve mixed-integer programming problems

An heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve mixed integer programming problems. The optimal and suboptimal continuous solutions are first identified. Then, an integer solution is found in the neighborhood of each suboptimal and optimal point. If an integer point provides an infeasible solution, then the dual simplex method is used to derive a feasible integer solution. The suggested algorithm is derived under the framework of an integer exploratory search principle. Once an integer solution is found at each optimal and suboptimal point, the best point is called the heuristic solution for the underlying problem. The heuristic algorithm has successfully been applied to solve a production planning problem and it is compared with a well known commercial computer package, CPLEX. Optimising the management of a heterogeneous stand

The study presents a method for taking the heterogeneity of the stand into account in the optimisation of stand management. Heterogeneity refers to within-stand variation in stand density and/or other characteristics. A set of plots, corresponding to different sub-areas of the stand, represents the stand in calculations. Cuttings and other treatments of the plots are done simultaneously. The method was used to analyse how the optimal management depends on the heterogeneity of a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand. The results supported the hypothesis that the heterogeneity of a stand decreases its optimal prior-thinning density. Also the remaining stand basal areas were lower in heterogeneous stands, especially in spruce. The effect of stand heterogeneity prior to the first commercial thinning still affected the timing of the second thinning, which had to be conducted earlier and at lower prior-thinning basal areas in heterogeneous stands. This happened despite the fact that the first thinning greatly decreased the within-stand variation in stand basal area. In addition, heterogeneity decreased the soil expectation value, net income and timber harvests.

The Lorentz model parameters for alumina, aluminum arsenide, zinc oxide, potassium bromide, graphene and gallium arsenide are optimized using a nonlinear optimization algorithm based on the hooke and jeeves method. The complex relative permittivity of each of the mentioned materials is calculated over a long wavelength range using the optimized parameters. The obtained permittivity curves exhibit very good match with those obtained from the experimental results. The symmetric SPP mode propagation through MDM waveguides containing alumina and aluminum arsenide as dielectric layers sandwiched between layers of silver has been investigated using their optimized modeling parameters.
