An automatic image processing based on hough transform algorithm for pavement crack detection and classification

PurposeIncipient detection of pavement deterioration (such as crack identification) is critical to optimizing road maintenance because it enables preventative steps to be implemented to mitigate damage and possible failure. Traditional visual inspection has been largely superseded by semi-automatic/automatic procedures given significant advancements in image processing. Therefore, there is a need to develop automated tools to detect and classify ***/methodology/approachThe literature review is employed to evaluate existing attempts to use hough transform algorithm and highlight issues that should be improved. Then, developing a simple low-cost crack detection method based on the hough transform algorithm for pavement crack detection and *** results reveal that model accuracy reaches 92.14% for vertical cracks, 93.03% for diagonal cracks and 95.61% for horizontal cracks. The time lapse for detecting the crack type for one image is circa 0.98 s for vertical cracks, 0.79 s for horizontal cracks and 0.83 s for diagonal cracks. Ensuing discourse serves to illustrate the inherent potential of a simple low-cost image processing method in automated pavement crack detection. This paper proposes an eye control system employing eye gaze tracking techniques that might be helpful for those limb disabled people with healthy eyes. Eye gaze tracking technique is attracting more and more research interest in recent years. With an aim to overcome the shortcomings of existing methods (e.g., high hardware complexity and low detection accuracy), we use the pupil-corneal reflection technique to develop an ameliorated hough transform algorithm, which is the core unit of the proposed system. We also design a typing function as well as an efficiently blink detection function. With these functions, users can input numbers into the computer with their eyes only through a specifically designed head mount eye control device. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ameliorated hough transform algorithm provides a satisfactory typing accuracy of 87%, much higher than its counterpart in the literature.

In this paper, the implementation of a new algorithm for the calculation of the hough transform (HT) with on-line arithmetic is introduced. This algorithm allows reducing considerably the use of multipliers and tables of transfer. The main idea consists in using a combination of incremental method with the usual HT expression calling on-line calculation mode, which is efficient for real time applications.

Lane detection techniques have been widely studied in the last two decades and applied in many advance driver assistance systems. However, the development of a robust lane detection system, which can deal with various road conditions and efficiently evaluate its detection results in real time, is still of great challenge. In this study, a vision-based lane detection system with dynamic integration and online evaluation is proposed. To increase the robustness of the lane detection system, the integration system dynamically processes two lane detection modules. First, a primary lane detection module is designed based on the steerable filter and hough transform algorithm. Then, a secondary algorithm, which combines the Gaussian mixture model for image segmentation and random sample consensus for lane model fitting, will be activated when the primary algorithm encounters a low detection confidence. To detect the colour and line style of the ego lanes and evaluate the lane detection system in real time, a lane sampling and voting technique is proposed. By combining the sampling and voting system system with prior lane geometry knowledge, the evaluation system can efficiently recognise the false detections. The system works robustly in various complex situations (e.g. shadows, night, and lane missing scenarios) with a monocular camera.

Distributed asteroid discovery system for large astronomical data

Thanks to the advanced technology in astronomical observations, astronomers have collected massive data sets. One of the research tasks is to discover asteroids based on observational data. However, with the fast-growing volume of astronomical data sets, this task becomes enormously relied on computing power. Therefore, the cloud-enable distributed computation and super powerful computation power can offer a good solution to this field. We adopt the hough transform to link the sequential DETECTIONs of asteroids, and also design a distributed algorithm to process this task on distributed cloud environment for flexible and efficient calculation. Our designs are developed on MapReduce and Spark frameworks. We also utilizes HDFS and HBase in order to reduce disk I/O overhead and increase reliability and scalability. The system architecture is built on the OpenStack which allocates hardware resources flexibly. Our experiment results show significant improvements of calculation time. We believe this will help astronomers to interactively access and analyze data to discover asteroids. The system can also incrementally update DETECTIONs linking with new observed data. It also provides the visual interface to inspect the linked DETECTIONs of asteroids.

Comparison of estimation algorithms for individual tree diameter at breast height based on hand-held mobile laser scanning

Hand-held mobile laser scanning (HMLS) can quickly and effectively obtain tree point cloud data, which has great potential to conduct forest resource survey at the plot or stand scale. To improve the estimation precision of Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) for individual trees based on HMLS data, four algorithms were compared and the ideal conditions (slice thickness, inclination, point cloud integrity) of use for each algorithm were evaluated. First, the original point cloud data were denoised, sliced, layered, and clustered based on the normalized point cloud data. Then, the tree DBH was estimated by the four algorithms under different conditions. Results showed that: (1) The optimal point cloud thickness for estimating tree DBH was 5 cm for the two-dimensional algorithms and 15 cm for the three-dimensional algorithm. (2) The root mean square error (RMSE) varied by approximately 0.5 and 0.18 cm with the change of inclination for two-dimensional algorithms and three-dimensional algorithm, respectively. (3) A reduction in point cloud integrity can affect the accuracy of all four algorithms, while the fast convex hull algorithm was the most impacted. The two-dimensional algorithms were computationally more efficient than the three-dimensional one. However, the former was less robust than the latter.

Track-Before-Detect (TBD) is a detection technique that simultaneously tracks and detects a target. The technique is specially useful for targets whose back-scattered return is significantly lower than the surrounding noise and background environments. Different algorithms proposed to perform TBD include particle filter, dynamic programming and hough transform algorithms have been proposed. These techniques work well in a highly noise environment with constant velocity targets. However, some of these techniques are not applicable to targets that have acceleration as well as targets embedded in sea clutter. In this paper, we present a beamlet track-before-detect technique for maritime detection. Due to the sea clutter, two different adaptive sea clutter filtering methods are applied before the aforementioned TBD technique. Overall, the paper introduces and studies a beamlet TBD technique for maneuverable maritime targets in sea clutter.

The identification of the PSF can be converted to the identification of the parameter of the degradation function. A fine estimation of the blur parameters is a key point for restoration of blurred images. In this paper we propose an approach for estimating PSF parameters. The blur angle estimation based on hough transform is improved. In addition, some pre-processing steps are applied to the system, such as smoothed filter, spectrum optimization. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method estimates the blur angle and the blur length more accurately than the algorithm proposed by ***.
