A human-computer interface based on the "voluntary" pupil accommodative response

Objectives: Changes in pupil size are governed by the autonomic nervous system but may be systematically driven by voluntary shifting the gaze in depth. Thus, the pupil accommodative response (PAR) that accompanies voluntary gaze shifts from a far to a near target might be exploited as a simple human-computer interface (HCI), bypassing the somato-motor system. Here we aim to characterize PAR in quasi-natural conditions with low-cost equipment and test the possibility to use PAR as a binary communication tool. Methods: Nineteen healthy subjects were instructed to voluntary switch the focus from a far to a near target upon presentation of an auditory cue. Three protocols addressed the effects of monocular/binocular vision, eye illuminance, duration of near vision, target texture and target brightness on PAR features. In a fourth protocol PAR was used to establish binary communication at different bit rates. Results: PAR amplitude decreased with increasing eye illuminance and was modulated by monocular/binocular vision, duration of near vision or target texture. PAR amplitude was larger with a bright near target and a dark far target than vice-versa. However, PAR was always clearly present, regardless of the experimental manipulations. PAR-based communication performance achieved an accuracy of 100% at 10 bits/min and 96% at 15 bits/ min. Significance: Voluntary PAR is a robust signal, and can achieve a high communication speed when used as an HCI. This study provides a proof of concept for a PAR-based HCI, potentially useful to communicate with locked in patients with preserved visual and autonomic functions.

Disable persons are facing a lot of problems in daily life activities. They need some help from others to fulfil their needs every day. To avoid this condition modern technology help such persons to overcome the problem in a natural way like bio signal based-human-computer interaction. In this paper, we focused to study the performance of male subjects compared with female subjects to analyze the performance to design Electrooculographgy-based HCI using periodogram and neural network. Five male subjects and five female subjects are involved in this experiment. From the experimental analysis, we identified that male performance was maximum compared to female performance. From this paper, we analyzed that subject S4 from male subjects and subject S10 from female subjects performance was marginally high compared with other subjects performance took part in this experiment. From the classification accuracy, we conclude that male subject performance was encouraged with 93.67 % and 92.28% for female subjects. The offline test was conducted in the indoor environment to identify the tasks to confirm the performance of individual subjects. From the offline analysis, we conclude that subject S4 performance was high compared to other subjects take part in this paper. Subject S4 took less time to perform the task as per the protocol. Through this paper, we confirm that scheming HCI is achievable.

A human-computer interface for wrist rehabilitation: a pilot study using commercial sensors to detect wrist movements

Health conditions might cause muscle weakness and immobility in some body parts;hence, physiotherapy exercises play a key role in the rehabilitation. To improve the engagement during the rehabilitation process, we therefore propose a human-computer interface (serious game) in which five wrist movements (extension, flexion, pronation, supination and neutral) are detected via two commercial sensors (Leap motion controller and Myo armband). Leap motion provides data regarding positions of user's finger phalanges through two infrared cameras, while Myo armband facilitates electromyography signal and inertial motion of user's arm through its electrodes and inertial measurement unit. The main aim of this study is to explore the performance of these sensors on wrist movement recognition in terms of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. Eight healthy participants played 5 times a proposed game with each sensor in one session. Both sensors reported over 85% average recognition accuracy in the five wrist movements. Based on t test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test, early results show that there were significant differences between Leap motion controller and Myo armband recognitions in terms of average sensitivities on extension (p=0.0356), flexion (p=0.0356) and pronation (p=0.0440) movements, and average specificities on extension (p=0.0276) and pronation (p=0.0249) movements.

For several years the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has been questioned as a reason to diminish the social interaction between people. Although, it is not possible to remove ICT from our lives as we depend on them in many aspects, we can adapt them so that their use allows us to improve our social skills. This is the case of the human-computer interface (HCI) and, especially those that involve emotions in a communication with machines similar to human interaction between peers. In this article, the implementation of an HCI based on an intelligent virtual agent is presented, with the possibility of learning basic information about the interlocutor and maintaining a short interaction on topics of general interest. The implementation was made in open-source software, generating not only a tool, but a development platform for other people to make contributions. The virtual agent was evaluated through short sessions with university students, who, according to a survey conducted, showed their acceptance of the interaction process.

Stroke affects the population worldwide, with a prevalence of 0.58% worldwide. One of the possible consequences is the negative impact in the motor function of the patient, limiting their quality of life. For these reason, Brain-computer interfaces are studied as a tool for improving rehabilitation processes. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there are no Brain-computer interface systems which use video-games for upper limb motor rehabilitation. This study aimed to design and assess a human-computer interface that includes electroencephalography, forearm motion and postural analysis, with healthy subjects. This assessment was made by designing two scenarios in which the participant carried out exercises involving the mouth and the hand and forearm trajectory symmetry. Results show that the system is ready to be tested on patients, since the participants were comfortable using it. Also, the quantitative results, particularly, the metrics used in the video-game, are an important start for health professionals to characterize motor rehabilitation in stroke patients, enabling the path to the use of the designed system in motor rehabilitation therapies.

Impact Localization on Rigid Surfaces Using Hermitian Angle Distribution for human-computer interface Applications

We propose an algorithm to localize impacts on rigid surfaces using induced vibration signals. This allows for the conversion of daily objects, such as tabletops and glass panels, into human-computer touch interfaces using low-cost piezoelectric sensors. Impact localization is achieved by estimating the time-of-arrivals and subsequently time-difference-of-arrivals of the sensor-received signals. Time-of-arrival estimation is highly challenging with increasing source-sensor distance due to the occurrence of a gradual noise-to-signal transition at the sensor output. We address this problem by first converting the signal into Hermitian angle distributions. The time-varying probability contributions of the background noise and vibration signal in each of the distributions are subsequently monitored to identify the instant when the signal begins to dominate the noise, signifying the signals arrival. The proposed framework also allows simultaneous time-of-arrival estimation across all the sensors to minimize errors in the resultant time-difference-of-arrival estimates. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing techniques for source localization on solid surfaces of different materials.

In this note, we propose a human-computer interface glove based on flexible piezoelectric sensors. We select polyvinylidene fluoride as the piezoelectric material for the sensors because of advantages such as a steady piezoelectric characteristic and good flexibility. The sensors are installed in a fabric glove by means of pockets and Velcro bands. We detect changes in the angles of the finger joints from the outputs of the sensors, and use them for controlling a virtual hand that is utilized in virtual object manipulation. To assess the sensing ability of the piezoelectric sensors, we compare the processed angles from the sensor outputs with the real angles from a camera recoding. With good agreement between the processed and real angles, we successfully demonstrate the user interaction system with the virtual hand and interface glove based on the flexible piezoelectric sensors, for four hand motions: fist clenching, pinching, touching, and grasping.

An Adaptive Hardware and Software Based human computer interface for People with Motor Disabilities

This paper introduces IOM (an acronym for interface Oculos Mouse, in Portuguese), an adaptive human-computer interface for people with motor disabilities in the upper limbs. The device, designed to be a low-cost hardware solution, consists of an eye frame glasses with integrated sensors responsible for detecting head movements and eyes blinks. IOM is accompanied by a user-friendly software interface that allows its users to adjust configuration options according to their needs and preferences. The goal of the interface is to enable the users to control the computer entirely. The paper presents the main components of both hardware architecture and software design that make up the developed prototype. At the end, the paper also reports the first evaluation process of the IOM device. Initial experiments performed using the AttrakDiff tool evaluate IOM, specifically from the end user's perspective, emphasizing desirable characteristics related to both hedonic and attractiveness dimensions. A comparison between some same purpose devices and the IOM using the Fitt's Law is presented in the paper. The preliminary experimental results show that the proposed platform attends to the usability aspect to computer requisites, in special for people with disabilities.

human-computer interfaces are designed to allow the control and interaction of a computer using uncommon methods. A method that has gained popularity in recent years due to the advancement of technology, specifically video technology and processing power of portable devices, is the eye tracking method for human-computer interface. The application presented is designed for people with neuro-motor disabilities and is represented by an on-line web interface. The interface is based on the selection of ideograms that are suggestive for different actions/desires of the patient. The paper presents the selection method implemented and the analysis of the precision of this method using a testing interface implemented in Matlab that allows the quantification of clicks/selections for different areas of the screen and the selection time required.

From the human-computer interface perspectives, the challenges to be faced are related to the consideration of new, multiple interactions, and the diversity of devices. The large panel of interactions (touching, shaking, voice dictation, positioning …) and the diversification of interaction devices can be seen as a factor of flexibility albeit introducing incidental complexity. Our work is part of the field of user interface description languages. After an analysis of the scientific context of our work, this paper introduces HCIDL, a modelling language staged in a model-driven engineering approach. Among the properties related to human-computer interface, our proposition is intended for modelling multi-target, multimodal, plastic interaction interfaces using user interface description languages. By combining plasticity and multimodality, HCIDL improves usability of user interfaces through adaptive behaviour by providing end-users with an interaction-set adapted to input/output of terminals and, an optimum layout.
