This paper investigates how low-cost embedded systems can be tailored to support the interaction between users with disabilities and computers. The main idea is to implement several software solutions for assistive technology to deploy on the user embedded device. When such a device is connected to a whichever computing system (e.g. through an USB connection), it acts as HID (human interface Device) peripheral (e.g., mouse and keyboard), so that the user can work on the computer without any previous configuration setup to adapt the behavior of the computing system to the user disability. The proposed solution exploits Cloud-based services to adapt the device firmware to the user's needs and preferences. To test the whole system, we discuss the design of an alternative input device based on MEMS accelerometers and the Atmega32u4 microcontroller and it is currently intended for individuals with motor disabilities.

A series of four experiments were performed during an iterative design evolution of the human-computer interface (HCI) to a small unmanned surface vehicle (USV). The baseline control system was compared to several alternate designs using a simulated naval mission. User tasks included the monitoring and control of one or two vessels simultaneously. Faults and hazards were included to stimulate emergency responses during vessel transit. Alternate HCI designs varied across these factors: visual integration, synthetic audio feedback, sizing and placement of alerts, and use of a hand-held game controller as a primary input device. Results for N=32 sailors across the four studies indicated that for single or dual USV control conditions, the interface features added to the baseline design significantly improved speed and accuracy across multiple mission tasks. However, all design configurations still yielded some collision errors indicating that operator visual monitoring and manual control may be inadequate in complex, cluttered transit environments. Therefore, on-board automatic obstacle avoidance systems may be needed to safely support multiple vessel operations in cluttered complex transit environments. © 2015 The Authors

An event-driven on-vehicle intelligent human-computer interface has been proposed to solve the problem of complex on-vehicle human-computer interaction. After need analysis of human-computer interaction under the vehicle platform, the framework of intelligent human-computer interface is established, various modules and workflows in the system are designed, and the reasoning feature based on fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) is implemented. The on-vehicle intelligent human-computer interface could help users to complete the interactive operation which is unrelated to the driving operations. Furthermore, the system could analyze the whole information and predict the information required by the user. At last, it could display the information on the interface. So, the on-vehicle intelligent human-computer interface could not only meet the user's demand for secondary interactive tasks, but also could ensure the driving performance and safety.

We have designed LiTu (Lai'Tu - Light Tube) as a customisable and low-cost (ca 30 Euros) human-computer interface. It is composed of an acrylic tube, a ball-bearing mirror, six LEDs and a webcam. Touching the tube causes frustrated internal reflection of light due to a change in the critical angle at the acrylic-skin boundary. Scattered light within the tube is reflected off the mirror into the camera at the opposite end for image processing. Illuminated contact regions in the video frames are segmented and processed to generate 2D information such as: pitch and volume, or x and y coordinates of a graphic. We demonstrate the functionality of LiTu both as a musical instrument and as an interactive computer graphics controller. For example, various musical notes can be generated by touching specific regions around the surface of the tube. Volume can be controlled by sliding a finger down the tube and pitch by sliding the finger radially. We demonstrate the adaptable nature of LiTu's touch interface and discuss our plans to explore future physical modifications of the device.

LightTouch: Harnessing Laser-Based Signal Injection to Manipulate Optical human-computer interfaces

This paper studies the capability of light-based signal injection attacks to remotely inject fake inputs to modern optical sensor-based input devices. We demonstrate how an attacker can successfully inject malicious Character User interface (CUI) commands on different laser-projection keyboards and generate fake mouse-cursor movements in bending mouses, using invisible to human eyes, infrared lasers. Our proof-of-concept evaluation shows how the attack achieves 100% success rate on injecting basic keyboard operations up to 7 meters away from the victim input device and through glass windows, without tampering with the victim computer system, or needing a network connection to pursue the attack. This vulnerability allows the attacker not only to type unauthorized commands but also to prevent the unlocked victim PC or workstation from automatically going to sleep mode, thereby extending the time window for locally committing malicious activities, i.e., lunchtime attacks. Within a wide viewing angle of 30 degrees-45 degrees from the victim input device location, the attacker can continuously inject false movements and press at least 24 consecutive keys without any failure up to 5 meters away. We also verify the attack feasibility in realistic office environments where the laser beam is partially occluded. Our analysis shows the potential security risks of invisible light injection attacks, including providing preventive defense measures to limit exposure of optical input interfaces to such a threat. This work aims to help manufacturers address the vulnerability and build reliable human-computer interfaces.

Eye Tracking Study on Visual Search Performance of Automotive human-Machine interface for Elderly Users

The advancement of Intelligent vehicle is leading to a growing prevalence and importance of automotive interactive interfaces, attracting considerable research focus. With the increasing trend of global aging, the number of elderly drivers is on the rise. Research on the search performance of the automobile interactive interface for elderly users has yet to be carried out. Based on this, this research adopts eye tracking technology to explore the effects of varying icon colors on the preferences and perceptions of elderly drivers within car-human interfaces, employing eye-tracking technology to gauge their impact. This work aims to improve driving experience by enhancing drivers' information processing capabilities and interaction comfort with in-car interfaces. In this study, we examined six distinct foreground colors against two background colors in icon designs, conducting eye-tracking experiments in standard indoor lighting. The analysis results show that elderly drivers have faster search speeds for orange icons and the slowest search speeds for yellow icons. Additionally, the variation in search times for different icon colors is more pronounced on a white background. These conclusions hold significant implications for future automotive interface designers. They can leverage these results to optimize the background and icon designs of interactive interfaces, thereby enhancing drivers' safety and driving experience, and contributing efforts to the transportation industry.

A dynamic hand gesture recognition dataset for human-computer interfaces

computer vision systems are commonly used to design touch-less human-computer interfaces (HCI) based on dynamic hand gesture recognition (HGR) systems, which have a wide range of applications in several domains, such as, gaming, multimedia, automotive, home automation. However, automatic HGR is still a challenging task, mostly because of the diversity in how people perform the gestures. In addition, the number of publicly available hand gesture datasets is scarce, often the gestures are not acquired with sufficient image quality, and the gestures are not correctly performed. In this data article, we propose a dataset of 27 dynamic hand gesture types acquired at full HD resolution from 21 different subjects, which were carefully instructed before performing the gestures and monitored when performing the gesture;the subjects had to repeat the movement in case the performed hand gesture was not correct, i.e., the authors of this paper that were observing the gesture found that it did not correspond to the exact expected movement and/or the camera recorded a viewpoint did not allow for a plain visualizing of the gesture. Each subject performed 3 times the 27 hand gestures for a total of 1701 videos collected and corresponding 204,120 video frames.

Evaluation of a silicone-based flexible dry electrode for measuring human bioelectrical signals

The development of conductive polymer-based dry electrodes with high conductivity is promising for practical applications in daily life due to their biocompatibility, flexibility, lightweight, and comfort. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of using a novel silicone-based dry electrode for measuring various bioelectrical *** silicone-based electrode, manufactured using an optimized polymer matrix, combines high conductivity with flexibility, ensuring superior wearability and reliable bioelectrical signal monitoring. To evaluate its performance, we compared its impedance and flexibility with those of a commercial electrode. Additionally, its compatibility for measuring biological signals was assessed through performance comparisons across various bioelectrical signals. Fourteen healthy participants performed three experimental paradigms: (1) eyes closed and open to measure alpha electroencephalography (EEG) as well as resting-state electrocardiography (ECG), (2) eye blinking to measure electrooculography (EOG), and (3) wrist movement to measure electromyography (EMG). All bioelectrical signals were measured simultaneously using both the silicone-based dry electrode and a commercial dry electrode. The performance of the silicone-based dry electrode was evaluated by comparing the signal quality of both electrodes. The silicone-based dry electrode exhibited lower electrical impedance (39.43 k Omega on average, p = 0.0058) and greater flexibility (Young's modulus: silicone 1.51 +/- 0.10 MPa vs. commercial 2.46 +/- 0.38 MPa) compared to the commercial dry electrode. Overall, there were minimal differences in signal quality between the two electrodes: i) EEG (alpha power SNR: silicone 1.39 +/- 0.34 vs. commercial 1.36 +/- 0.29), ii) ECG (R-peak recall: 99.20 +/- 2.50%, correlation coefficient: 0.96 +/- 0.08), iii) EOG (eye blink recall: 100.00%, correlation coefficient: 0.98 +/- 0.03), and iv) EMG (no significant difference in SNR values)

Effect Analysis of Wearing an Lumbar Exoskeleton on Coordinated Activities of the Low Back Muscles Using sEMG Topographic Maps

Lumbar exoskeleton has potential to assist in lumbar movements and thereby prevent impairment of back muscles. However, due to limitations of evaluation tools, the effect of lumbar exoskeletons on coordinated activities of back muscles is seldom investigated. This study used the surface electromyography (sEMG) topographic map based on multi-channel electrodes from low back muscles to analyze the effects. Thirteen subjects conducted two tasks, namely lifting and holding a 20kgweight box. For each task, three different trials, not wearing exoskeleton (NoExo), wearing exoskeleton but power-off (OffExo), and wearing exoskeleton and power-on (OnExo), were randomly conducted. Root-mean-square (RMS) and median-frequency (MDF) topographic maps of the recorded sEMG were constructed. Three parameters, average pixel values, distribution of center of gravity (CoG), and entropy, were extracted from the maps to assess the muscle coor dinated activities. In the lifting task, results showed the average pixel values of RMS maps for the NoExo trial were lower than those for the OffExo trial (p<0.05) but the same as those for the OnExo trial (p>0.05). The distribution of CoG showed a significant difference between NoExo and OnExo trials (p<0.05). In the holding task, RMS and MDF maps' average pixel values showed significant differences between NoExo and OnExo trials (p<0.05). These findings suggest that active lumbar exoskeletons can reduce the load on low back muscles in the static holding task rather than in the dynamic lifting task. This proves sEMG topographic maps offer a new way to evaluate such effects, thereby helping improve the design of lumbar exoskeleton systems.

Task-value motivational prompts in a descriptive dashboard can increase anxiety among anxious learners

Despite the ubiquitous use of learning analytics dashboards in computer-mediated learning environments, there is still a knowledge gap on how these tools can support learners' academic performance and motivation. This article describes an experimental study that investigated the influence of motivational prompts (task-value scaffolding) in a descriptive learning analytics dashboard on learners' motivation, statistics anxiety, and learning performance in an authentic semester-long online statistics course. The study was based on a two-group experimental design during two semesters (Fall 2020 and Spring 2021). A total of 122 graduate students completed the study. The results showed that despite learners' mostly positive perceptions of the dashboard, the use of motivational prompts did not influence learners' cognitive outcomes. Test anxiety was the only affective outcome influenced by the intervention, with motivational prompts having a negative effect on learners who started the course with a higher level of test anxiety. This study provides needed empirical evidence on how the design of these tools can influence learners' affective outcomes, with implications for theory and practice. However, additional experimental studies that account for sources of heterogeneity (e.g., intrapersonal characteristics, contextual factors) are necessary to uncover theoretical gaps and opportunities in the design of effective learning analytics dashboards.
