Controlling Media Player with Hands: A Transformer Approach and a Quality of Experience Assessment

In this article, we propose a Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR) system based on a novel deep transformer (DT) neural network for media player control. The extracted hand skeleton features are processed by separate transformers for each finger in isolation to better identify the finger characteristics to drive the following classification. The achieved HGR accuracy (0.853) outperforms state-of-the-art HGR approaches when tested on the popular NVIDIA dataset. Moreover, we conducted a subjective assessment involving 30 people to evaluate the Quality of Experience (QoE) provided by the proposed DT-HGR for controlling a media player application compared with two traditional input devices, i.e., mouse and keyboard. The assessment participants were asked to evaluate objective (accuracy) and subjective (physical fatigue, usability, pragmatic quality, and hedonic quality) measurements. We found that (i) the accuracy of DT-HGR is very high (91.67%), only slightly lower than that of traditional alternative interaction modalities;and that (ii) the perceived quality for DT-HGR in terms of satisfaction, comfort, and interactivity is very high, with an average Mean Opinion Score (MOS) value as high as 4.4, whereas the alternative approaches did not reach 3.8, which encourages a more pervasive adoption of the natural gesture interaction.

Exploring the Long-Term User Experience of an Interactive Loading Screen Using UX Curve and QUIS

User experience can change with time, and achieving a positive long-term user experience is an important goal in a successful product design. The long-term user experience of the interactive loading screen in Honor of Kings was studied by using two evaluation methods, UX Curve and QUIS questionnaire. The experiment included valid responses from a total of 23 participants. The results show that an interactive human-computer interface can achieve a good long-term waiting experience. It is also necessary to make changes to the UI or functions of the interactive screen after a period of time to ensure a good user experience. A toolbox including the QUIS questionnaire and UX Curve was proven effective in measuring the temporal aspects of user experience of the computer interface. The findings obtained in the experiments help understand the long-term user experience of human-computer interfaces. They may also provide a reference for developing different long-term user experience evaluation methods in different product contexts.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is extensively explored in human-computer interface (HCI);complementary to the electrophysiological activity of the muscles, the hemodynamic information that measured from near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is less investigated. Properly combining the sEMG and NIRS would provide a novel approach for HCI applications. This paper presents a multi-channel wireless wearable sEMG and NIRS acquisition system aiming for enhanced human-computer interaction, by providing more information about the muscle activity for subject's motor intention decoding. Extensive tests were carried out to evaluate the system performance. It showed that this novel system proved to be able to capture sEMG signals similar to those of the commercialized sEMG acquisition devices, and had a comparable NIRS sensor performance. Furthermore, simultaneously recording of sEMG and NIRS signals, the system had shown the ability to provide more information about the muscle activities for a better HCI performance. The classification accuracy of 13 hand gesture motions was significantly (P<0.001) improved by using combined sEMG and NIRS features comparing to sEMG or NIRS features individually, suggesting that the proposed sEMG and NIRS system could be potentially available for an enhanced HCI.

Humidity sensors were widely used in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. According to medical respiration monitoring, noncontact sensing, and human-computer interface requirements, fast response and high repeatability are important for efficient and precise signal acquisition. Previous research works mainly focus on sensitivity improvement with the scarification of response time, stability, and repeatability. In this paper, we proposed the surface acoustic wave (SAW) humidity sensors with comprehensive performance using the uniform multiwrinkled graphene oxide (GO) films as the sensing material obtained by vacuum filtration and liquid phase transfer method. The multiwrinkled GO films offered controllable thickness (thin to 29 nm), uniform wafer-level fabrication (2 in.), and abundant wrinkle, making them become effective sensitive films for SAW humidity sensors due to numerous adsorption sites and transfer channels for water molecules. The experimental results showed that the sensors can obtain high sensitivity (10.5 kHz/RH%@60 nm thick film), ultrafast response (similar to 45 ms), good stability (variation amplitude similar to 0.1%), repeatability (variation amplitude similar to 1%), and wafer-level fabrication capability demonstrating their practical applications for medical respiration monitoring, noncontact sensing, and human-computer interface.

Intention Among Information Technology Professionals to Adopt Paid MOOCs from E-Learning Platforms: An Empirical Study

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) can be considered an important tool for professionals to reskill and upskill as well as a cost-efficient way to stay relevant. However, evidence-based research is still needed to identify why specific categories of people, especially professionals, take paid MOOCs. The paper aims to analyze the factors that influence IT working Professionals to adopt paid MOOCs using the UTAUT 2 model. Based on a survey conducted on 250 respondents, the study uses multiple regression to understand the significance of factors affecting the intention to adopt paid MOOCs. A multigroup analysis was also done to understand the differences among different age groups and genders. The results establish that social influence, facilitating conditions, brand credibility and price value are significant in the adoption of MOOCs. Performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and curiosity were found to be insignificant. Based on the research findings, the implication of the study and future scope for research have been suggested.

Scoping Review of Research on Augmented Reality in Environmental Education

Augmented reality (AR) is one of the key emerging educational technologies that has gained traction in recent years. Subsequently, researchers have also begun to acknowledge AR's potential as a pedagogical tool that can be integrated into school curricula for environmental education. Such progress is important since the urgency of the climate crisis as evidenced by recent extreme weather events (e.g., record-breaking storms, severe heatwaves across the globe) emphasizes the need to ramp up efforts for educating the youth on the environment. Thus, this scoping review aimed to summarize the characteristics of studies on the use of AR in environmental education to identify important gaps and trends in the literature. A search of three databases (Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect) was conducted. Forty-two articles were retained after the systematic search procedure and selection process. Findings point to the need for more studies on the use of AR in environmental education. The need to involve teachers in research on AR in environmental education is emphasized, due to the observed lack of participation of teachers in such studies. In future research on this topic, more inclusion and diversity are also recommended to test AR's utility and effectiveness across contexts. We also recommend an assessment of outcomes relevant to student learning for a more education-driven approach to evaluating the value of AR in promoting environmental education. Other implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Utilizing augmented reality for embodied mental rotation training: A learning analytics study

Mental rotation is the ability to mentally rotate two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects in one's mind. Previous studies have examined the relationship between mental rotation abilities and embodied cognition. However, conflicting findings underscore the necessity for further investigation. This study aims to investigate how different levels of embodiment in mental rotation training affect mental rotation training. Three versions of mental rotation training with different levels of embodiment (keyboard, touchpad and augmented reality) were developed for this study. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with a total of 125 university students to explore how different training versions affect participants' training performances, perception of the usability of the training and mental rotation ability. The results suggest those who used the versions with higher levels of bodily engagement performed better than those who used the versions with lower levels of bodily engagement (p < 0.001). Participants' mental rotation ability also improved significantly after training with the augmented reality (AR(1)) version compared to those in the keyboard group (p = 0.01). The learning analytics results provide additional clarity by indicating that the participants' mental rotation ability can be predicted by their training performance in the AR condition (p < 0.001). This study has significant implications for the potential of using embodied AR training to improve mental rotation ability.

Promoting musical instrument learning in virtual reality environment: Effects of embodiment and visual cues

While virtual reality (VR) provides a great potential for musical instrument learning, little attention has been paid to the instructional design in creating a VR musical instrument. Previous research has suggested that high embodied interaction or added visual cues (e.g., distinctive colors, flashing areas) on VR-based musical instrument may aid students' learning. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and efficacy of the embodied design (low and high level of embodiment;LoEmb and HiEmb) and visual cues (low and high level of visual cues;LoViz and HiViz) on students' musical instrument learning. Four corresponding virtual Chinese dulcimers (Yangqin) were thereby designed. A sample of 112 university students participated in our study, and they were randomly assigned into the four conditions (LoEmb & LoViz, LoEmb & HiViz, HiEmb & LoViz, and HiEmb & HiViz). Results showed that the LoEmb design benefited students' completion rate, the HiViz improved students' playing rhythmic accuracy. Both LoEmb and HiViz decreased students' playing errors and improved their overall performance. Moreover, we found that the HiViz and HiEmb designs had a combined effect on reducing students' cognitive load and improving the instructional efficiency of learning material. These findings collectively reveal that the design of VR learning materials should carefully consider the trade-off between the level of embodiment and visual cues.

Comparison of classification techniques for the control of EOG-based HCIs

Electrooculogram (EOG) is the measurement of the biopotential generated by eye movement. These signals are crucial for people with severe motor disabilities because they rarely suffer alterations in eye movement. Therefore, the correct classification of these signals could find application in the design of simple user interfaces that allow independence and communication skills. This paper presents a comparison of the main classification techniques in the literature for the control of EOG-based human-computer interfaces (HCIs). Static threshold, K-nearest neighbor (KNN), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM) techniques, together with two new ensembles of classifiers. One is based on a voting scheme while the other employs two stages to encode the outcomes from the KNN, SVM, and ANN classifiers. All classifiers were compared based on four parameters - precision, specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy - to select the most appropriate approach in real-time. This work also provides a novel data set consisting of signals from nine healthy participants and compares the above methods also on another public data set. Machine learning-based models proved to be more robust for continuous use of an EOG-based HCI, while static thresholds are better for specific and repetitive actions.
