The impact of avatar transitions, in which an avatar's appearance is changed, has been little studied. We implemented an avatar transition system that is decomposed into two parts: an active one and a passive one. In the active transition, the avatar's appearance is transformed according to the user's physical action. In the passive transition, users automatically experience the same transition without physical action. The influence of transitions on the user's physical performance and the sense of embodiment was explored. Our results show that active transitions increase the sense of agency and magnitude of surface electromyography (sEMG) compared to passive transitions, and both transitions increase the sEMG magnitude following the virtual Reality embodiment.

A critical component of user studies is gaining access to a representative sample of the population researches intend to investigate. Nevertheless, the vast majority of human-computer interaction (HCI) studies, including augmented reality (AR) studies, rely on convenience sampling. The outcomes of these studies are often based on results obtained from university students aged between 19 and 26 years. In order to investigate how the results from one of our studies are affected by convenience sampling, we replicated the AR-supported language learning study called VocabulARy with 24 teenagers, aged between 14 and 19 years. The results verified most of the outcomes from the original study. In addition, it also revealed that teenagers found learning significantly less mentally demanding compared to young adults, and completed the study in a significantly shorter time. All this at no cost to learning outcomes.

Spatial information understanding is fundamental to visual perception in Metaverse. Beyond the stereoscopic visual cues naturally carried in Metaverse, the human vision system may use other auxiliary information provided by any shadow casting or motion parallax available to perceive the 3D virtual world. However, the combined use of shadows and motion parallax to improve 3D perception have not been fully studied. In particular, when visualizing the combination of volumetric data and associated skeleton models in VR, how to provide the auxiliary visual cues to enhance observers' perception of the structural information is a key yet underexplored topic. This problem is particularly challenging for visualization of data in biomedical research. In this paper, we focus on immersive analytics in neurobiology where the structural information includes the relative position of objects (nuclei / cell body) in the 3D space and the spatial measurement and connectivity of segments (axons and dendrites) in a model. We present a perceptual experiment designed for understanding the consequence of shadow casting and motion parallax in the neuron structures observation and the feedback and analysis of the experiment are reported and discussed.

We often encounter many situations where we manually interact with others collaboratively. This allows us to solve tasks that we would otherwise not be able to do on our own. Handover tasks are an everyday interaction that we perform with others without thinking about it. However, these tasks are complex coordinated actions between two actors based on sensory feedback that are performed in a very short time. In this work, an overview of handover tasks will be provided from a perspective of the interdisciplinary fields of human-robot interaction (HRI), neuroscience, cognitive science and human-computer interaction (HCI). For this purpose, the structure and process of a handover interaction will be examined and the current state of research will be reflected. The ability to represent realistic manual interactions in an immersive collaborative scenario enables the simulation and training of complex workflows in a realistic context. The study design presented in this paper is intended to improve the understanding and design of handover interaction techniques in virtual environments. Furthermore possibilities to substitute missing haptic feedback with other sensory stimuli will be evaluated.

Diminished reality (DR) is one of the frameworks in augmented reality, which visually makes obstructive objects transparent and shows their background. The techniques in DR can be divided into observation-based and inpainting-based methods. The observation-based method completes the region of interest (ROI) with the color and shape observed as the camera moves, while the inpainting-based method completes the region by inferring it from the surrounding pixels. In this paper, we propose a method that adaptively integrates the advantages of both methods with online surface reconstruction. The inpainting-based method completes the ROI at the beginning, while the observation-based method gradually completes the region using the reconstruction with RGB-D SLAM as the camera moves. In this way, our proposed method adaptively utilizes both the inpainting-based and observation-based methods according to the camera movement online. The evaluation with various scenes was conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed integration method by comparing it with each method.

Misinformation has disruptive effects on our lives. Many researchers have looked into means to identify and combat misinformation in text or data visualization. However, there is still a lack of understanding of how misinformation can be introduced when text and visualization are combined to tell data stories, not to mention how to improve the lay public's awareness of possible misperceptions about facts in narrative visualization. In this paper, we first analyze where misinformation could possibly be injected into the production-consumption process of data stories through a literature survey. Then, as a first step towards combating misinformation in data stories, we explore possible defensive design methods to enhance the reader's awareness of information misalignment when data facts are scripted and visualized. More specifically, we conduct a between-subjects crowdsourcing study to investigate the impact of two design methods enhancing text-visualization integration, i.e., explanatory annotation and interactive linking, on users' awareness of misinformation in data stories. The study results show that although most participants still can not find misinformation, the two design methods can significantly lower the perceived credibility of the text or visualizations. Our work informs the possibility of fighting an infodemic through defensive design methods.

Due to the additive light model employed by current optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMDs), the perceived contrast of displayed imagery is reduced with increased environment luminance, often to the point where it becomes difficult for the user to accurately distinguish the presence of visual imagery. While existing contrast models, such as Weber contrast and Michelson contrast, can be used to predict when the observer will experience difficulty distinguishing and interpreting stimuli on traditional displays, these models must be adapted for use with additive displays. In this paper, we present a simplified model of luminance contrast for optical see-through displays derived from Michelson's contrast equation and demonstrate two applications of the model: informing design decisions involving the color of virtual imagery and optimizing environment light attenuation through the use of neutral density filters.

In a collaborative environment where more than a single user need to complete a task together, being able to understand each other's emotional status is essential for a successful outcome. This is especially evident in remote collaboration tasks where the physical distance may create a lack of understanding, empathy, and comprehension between the partners. Typical remote collaboration systems share less information than that can be communicated in a physical interaction, which makes supporting awareness very challenging. Our proposed visual representation allows users to infer emotional patterns from physiological data, which could impact their communication style towards a more forceful or inactive and calm association. We investigate the potential effects of the proposed visual representation to support empathetic communication during remote collaboration, as well as the design guidelines for building such systems.

Feral data visualization is a posture offering theories and practices for designing data visualizations for collaborative survival in the midst of ecological and social turmoil. Feral data visualization demands an embrace of situated, embodied, vegetized, and feral forms of visual pattern making that might allow us to take up the task of building livability in our surrounding ecologies and communities. We demonstrate how these imperatives might unfold in practice through Tsuga Convictio, a research through design project. Feral data visualization calls designers to action, outlining three paths for crafting data visualizations for the feminine, vegetal, and embodied.
