Ontology for assessment studies of human-computer-interaction in surgery

Objective: New technologies improve modern medicine, but may result in unwanted consequences. Some occur due to inadequate human-computer-interactions (HCI). To assess these consequences, an investigation model was developed to facilitate the planning, implementation and documentation of studies for HCI in surgery. Methods and material: The investigation model was formalized in Unified Modeling Language and implemented as an ontology. Four different top-level ontologies were compared: Object-Centered High-level Reference, Basic Formal Ontology, General Formal Ontology (GFO) and Descriptive Ontology for Linguistic and Cognitive Engineering, according to the three major requirements of the investigation model: the domain-specific view, the experimental scenario and the representation of fundamental relations. Furthermore, this article emphasizes the distinction of "information model" and "model of meaning" and shows the advantages of implementing the model in an ontology rather than in a database. Results: The results of the comparison show that GFO fits the defined requirements adequately: the domain-specific view and the fundamental relations can be implemented directly, only the representation of the experimental scenario requires minor extensions. The other candidates require wide-ranging extensions, concerning at least one of the major implementation requirements. Therefore, the GFO was selected to realize an appropriate implementation of the developed investigation model. The ensuing development considered the concrete implementation of further model aspects and entities: sub-domains, space and time, processes, properties, relations and functions. Conclusions: The investigation model and its ontological implementation provide a modular guideline for study planning, implementation and documentation within the area of MCI research in surgery. The emergence of consumer priced bio-feedback devices, such as brain interfaces, biometric sensors, or health monitoring lead the pathway to new possibilities in human-computer interaction, and the creation of consumer experiences. The goal of this paper is to define categories for emotive media, present application scenarios, and introduce emotive media as a paradigm in human-computer-interaction.

In this paper the organisers present a brief overview of the second workshop on Emotion Representation and Modelling in human-computer-interaction-Systems. The ERM4HCI 2014 workshop is again held in conjunction with the 16th ACM International Conference on Mulitmodal interaction (ICMI 2014) taking place in Instanbul, Turkey. This year's ERM4HCI is focussed on the characteristics which are used to describe and further, to identify emotions. Moreover, the corresponding relations to personality and user state models are of interest. Especially, options towards a minimal set of characteristics will be discussed in the contex of multimodal affective human-computer interaction.

Ambient media are novel, and this new media form alters our daily-living experience in many ways. Ambient media refer to media environments that are embedded throughout the natural space where people are following their daily activities. These digital media environments become part of the living space and altering our daily-living experience in many ways. The goal of this article is to elaborate the status of ambient media today and to forecast how ambient media will develop in the next decade. It clearly identifies megatrends and develops scenarios (e. g., ambient-assisted living) for the future. These scenarios shall shed light on the potentials and give a glimpse on the potential future development of embedding digital objects into the daily living space. This paper is based on a future wheel approach and on an analysis of the results of an expert workshop. The article concludes with a discussion of the results and an evaluation of the impact of each scenario.

Emotion recognition using facial expression by fusing key points descriptor and texture features

Emotions have a great significance in human-to-human and in human-to-computer communication and interaction. In this paper, an effective and novel approach to recognize the emotions using facial expressions by the fusion of duplex features is proposed. The proposed approach broadly have three phases, phase-I: ROIs extraction, phase-2:Fusion of duplex features and phase-III: Classification. The proposed approach also gives a novel eye center detection algorithm to detect centres of the eyes. The outcome of the algorithm is further contribute to locate and partition the facial components. The hybrid combination of duplex features also gives the importance of fusion of features over individual features. The proposed approach classify the 5 basic emotions i.e. angry, happy, sad, disgust, surprise. The proposed method also raise the issue of high misclassification rate of emotions in higher age groups (>40) and successfully overcomes it. The proposed approach and its outcome evaluation is validated by using four datasets: the dataset created by us including 2500 images of 5 basic emotions (angry, happy, sad, disgust, surprise) having 500 images per emotions, CK+ dataset, MMI dataset and JAFEE dataset. Experimental results shows that the proposed work significantly improves the recognition rate (approx. 97%, 88%, 86%, 93%) and reduces the misclassification rate (approx.1.4%, 7.6%, 6.6%, 2.7%) even for the subjects of higher age group.

Preventing mind-wandering during driving: Predictions on potential interventions using a cognitive model

In this study, we made predictions on the effects of different interventions by adaptive automation systems designed to prevent mind-wandering while driving. Although cognitive load associated with secondary tasks tends to affect driving negatively, a simple secondary task can improve driving performance when the driving scenario is mundane. Nijboer and colleagues (2016) have hypothesized that if the driving task is simple, people might start mind-wandering, which interferes with driving. Furthermore, the authors proposed that a simple secondary task, which imposes less workload than mind-wandering, could prevent this from happening and thereby improve driving performance. Automation systems that are informed about and adapt to the cognitive state of the driver could leverage this effect by inducing mild cognitive load during mundane driving scenarios. To test suitable interventions, we combined an existing driver model with an existing model of mind-wandering implemented in the cognitive architecture ACT-R as executable theories of mind-wandering and cognitive processing in driving. Using these different models we show how mind-wandering harms driving performance at the behavioral level and that interventions eliciting mild cognitive load can mitigate this behavioral effect. However, the model indicates that some interventions incur a significant cognitive processing cost that adaptive automation systems must account for.

Gaze Generation for Avatars Using GANs

The movement of our eyes during conversations plays a crucial role in our communication. Through a mixture of aimed and subconscious control of our gaze, we nonverbally manage turn-taking in conversations and convey information about our state of mind and even neurological disorders. For animated avatars or robots, it is hence of fundamental importance to exhibit realistic eye movement in conversations to withstand the scrutiny of an observer and not fall into the Uncanny Valley. Otherwise, they will be rejected by the observer as unnatural and possibly scary, provoking disapproval of the entire avatar. Although there exist many promising application areas for avatars and great attention has been given to the automatic animation of mouth and facial expressions, the animation of the eyes is often left to simplistic, rule-based models or ignored altogether. In this work, we aim to alleviate this limitation by leveraging Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a potent machine-learning approach, to synthesize eye movement. By focusing on a restricted scenario of face-to-monitor interaction, we can concentrate on the eyes, ignoring additional factors such as gestures, body movement, and spatial positioning of conversation partners. Using a recently published dataset on eye movements during conversation, we train two GANs and compare their performance against three statistical models with hand-crafted rules. We subject all five models to statistical analysis, comparing them to the ground-truth data. We find that the GANs produce the best data of the four models that synthesized reasonable eye movement (excluding the best-scoring model for generating absurd movements). Additionally, we perform a user study, comparing each model pairwise against the others based on 73 participants, resulting in a total of 1314 pairwise comparisons. It shows that the GANs achieve acceptance ratings of 55.3% and 43.7%, outperforming the baseline model with an acceptance rate of 34.0%. Althou

Automation transparency: implications of uncertainty communication for human-automation interaction and interfaces

Operators of highly automated driving systems may exhibit behaviour characteristic for overtrust issues due to an insufficient awareness of automation fallibility. Consequently, situation awareness in critical situations is reduced and safe driving performance following emergency takeovers is impeded. A driving simulator study was used to assess the impact of dynamically communicating system uncertainties on monitoring, trust, workload, takeovers, and physiological responses. The uncertainty information was conveyed visually using a stylised heart beat combined with a numerical display and users were engaged in a visual search task. Multilevel analysis results suggest that uncertainty communication helps operators calibrate their trust and gain situation awareness prior to critical situations, resulting in safer takeovers. In addition, eye tracking data indicate that operators can adjust their gaze behaviour in correspondence with the level of uncertainty. However, conveying uncertainties using a visual display significantly increases operator workload and impedes users in the execution of non-driving related tasks. Practitioner Summary: This article illustrates how the communication of system uncertainty information helps operators calibrate their trust in automation and, consequently, gain situation awareness. Multilevel analysis results of a driving simulator study affirm the benefits for trust calibration and highlight that operators adjust their behaviour according to multiple uncertainty levels.

A practical augmented reality-assisted maintenance system framework for adaptive user support

This paper describes an Augmented Reality Maintenance System (ARMS) that can provide adaptive support and feedback to a user during maintenance. An innovative wrist-based haptic tracking methodology is implemented to provide maintenance step awareness to the maintenance operator when he/she is working within the maintenance workspace. This is integrated with an image-based step detection module to facilitate the determination on whether a step has been conducted correctly. To further adapt to the user's visualisation requirements during maintenance, a novel adaptive human-machine interface module has been incorporated. The result is a seamless AR-assisted maintenance platform that can better cater to the needs of the operators during maintenance by providing useful feedback to the operators. The system has been demonstrated through a case study to highlight the viability of the methodology in actual industrial scenarios.
