This article outlines the pedogogical imperatives and practical necessities that shaped the establishment of the new Master of Arts degree in humanities computing at the University of Alberta (Canada). Established as a graduate programme open to students across the Faculty of Arts, the programme provides a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary studies that combine the rigours of a traditional Liberal Arts education with hands-on experience in emerging technologies. Although research in humanities computing is not necessarily a broadly interdisciplinary proposition, the establishment of a humanities computing curriculum is. Teaching in humanities computing must incorporate the work of many different disciplines (either separately or in concert). It can serve as a powerful vehicle for promoting the type of collaboration between departments and faculties that many colleagues and administrators seek. Copyright © 2002, sage publications.

The paper describes Aelred, a web application that demonstrates the use of language technology in the Google App Engine cloud computing environment. Aelred serves up English literary texts with optional concordances for any word and a range of linguistic annotations including part-of-speech tagging, shallow parsing, and word sense definitions from WordNet. Two alternative approaches are described. In the first approach, annotations are created offline and uploaded to the cloud datastore. In the second approach, annotations are created online within the cloud computing framework. In both cases standard HTML is generated with a template engine so that the annotations can be viewed in ordinary web browsers.

Trust and user experience play an important role in visualisation in digital humanities. Digital humanities visualisation is not only a research process, tool, technique and methodology, but it is also increasingly becoming an experiential and exploratory activity for the public. However, there are few research fully investigated applications of visualisation from a user experience perspective, especially in terms of overall user experience beyond usability, such as pragmatic and hedonic experiences. We conducted an interview and eye-Tracking study with 30 participants using timelines and geographical maps as representatives of the digital humanities visualisations. The results show that casual users have richer hedonic than pragmatic experiences from their interactions with visualisations, and that timeline and geographical map visualisations bring a greater difference in immersion to the user experience. Users' experiences with different dimensions of data, narrative, visual, and visualisation all have an impact on trust, which further influences continuous adoption intentions. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

The integration of a colour scanner, three-dimensional CAD/CAM system and stereolithography apparatus provided a powerful means of building art to part. Artwork such as Chinese characters, human faces or flowers can be scanned by a scanner, converted into 3D reliefs within a CAD/CAM system and built using the SLA. In this article, the effectiveness of such an integrated system is illustrated with three examples from the coin industry.

Impact of facial tattoos and paintings on face recognition systems

In recent years, face recognition technologies have shown impressive recognition performance, mainly due to recent developments in deep convolutional neural networks. Notwithstanding those improvements, several challenges which affect the performance of face recognition systems remain. The authors investigate the impact that facial tattoos and paintings have on current face recognition systems. To this end, they first collected an appropriate database containing image-pairs of individuals with and without facial tattoos or paintings. The assembled database was used to evaluate how facial tattoos and paintings affect the detection, quality estimation, as well as the feature extraction and comparison modules of a face recognition system. The impact on these modules was evaluated using state-of-the-art open-source and commercial systems. The obtained results show that facial tattoos and paintings affect all the tested modules, especially for images where a large area of the face is covered with tattoos or paintings. The authors' work is an initial case study and indicates a need to design algorithms which are robust to the visual changes caused by facial tattoos and paintings.

Hadith is one of the most celebrated resources of Classical Arabic text. The hadiths, or Prophetic traditions (tradition for short), are narrations originating from the sayings and conduct of Prophet Muhammad. For Muslims, hadiths are the second most important source of Islamic jurisprudence after the Holy Qur'an. Each hadith consists of two parts, isnad and matn. Matn represents the actual text of the hadith, while isnad unwinds the chain of the authorities which precede and introduce the matn, the succession of people through whose channel the hadith reaches the last transmitter. The hadith corpus is huge and runs into hundreds of volumes. It has an even larger supporting work, e.g., commentaries, biographic material etc. Recently, there has been a renewed interest of this important subject by non-specialists. There are many research studies which have been published regarding hadith, specifically applying computational and natural language processing (NLP) techniques to help address some of the outstanding issues, or derive new insight into this classic resource. This paper surveys all major works that have addressed the subject of hadith through various computational and NLP methods, grouping them under three categories: hadith content-based studies, narration-based studies, and overall studies. We also take an in-depth look into pioneering works with many details appearing for the first time. Finally, we outline future research directions in Arabic hadith literature, including novel application of emerging natural language concept based sentiment and emotion mining techniques.

Movie abstraction via the progress of the storyline

An appropriate movie abstraction is helpful for movie producers to promote the progress of the storyline as well as for the audiences to capture the theme of the movie before watching the full-length movie. Most existing movie abstraction schemes rely heavily on video content only, which may not deliver ideal results because of the semantic gap between computer calculated low-level audiovisual features and human used high-level perceptual understanding. In this study, the authors incorporate script into movie content understanding and present a new movie abstraction approach via the progress of the storyline, which is the soul of a film that actually catches the audiences' attention. The authors first segment the movie scenes by analysis of the movie script. Then the authors conduct storyline analysis using the attention analysis and audiovisual features. Given the transition intensity values, the authors calculate the storyline progress score and adopt this as the criterion to generate movie abstraction. The promising experimental results demonstrate that the analysis of storyline evolution is an effective approach for the abstraction and understanding of movie content.

Multi-style Chinese art painting generation of flowers

With the proposal and development of Generative Adversarial Networks, the great achievements in the field of image generation are made. Meanwhile, many works related to the generation of painting art have also been derived. However, due to the difficulty of data collection and the fundamental challenge from freehand expressions, the generation of traditional Chinese painting is still far from being perfect. This paper specialises in Chinese art painting generation of flowers, which is important and classic, by deep learning method. First, an unpaired flowers paintings data set containing three classic Chinese painting style: line drawing, meticulous, and ink is constructed. Then, based on the collected dataset, a Flower-Generative Adversarial Network framework to generate multi-style Chinese art painting of flowers is proposed. The Flower-Generative Adversarial Network, consisting of attention-guided generators and discriminators, transfers the style among line drawing, meticulous, and ink by an adversarial training way. Moreover, in order to solve the problem of artefact and blur in image generation by existing methods, a new loss function called Multi-Scale Structural Similarity to force the structure preservation is introduced. Extensive experiments show that the proposed Flower-Generative Adversarial Network framework can produce better and multi-style Chinese art painting of flowers than existing methods.

Technique to correct yellowing and foxing in antique books

New algorithms for the automatic restoration of antique documents affected by foxing and by yellowing deterioration processes are proposed in the paper. The physical restoration of such objects is both expensive and hard to carry out by nonspecialised library personnel. The proposed algorithms ensure fast and less expensive results, and can be used also by nonqualified operators. Moreover, these techniques improve the performance of optical character recognition operators.
