Graph coloring algorithms are commonly used in large scientific parallel computing either for identifying parallelism or as a tool to reduce computation, such as compressing Hessian matrices. Large scientific computations are nowadays either run on commodity clusters or on large computing platforms. In both cases, the current target platform is hierarchical with distributed memory at the node level and shared memory at the processor level. In this paper, we present a novel hybrid graph coloring algorithm and discuss how to obtain the best performance on such systems from algorithmic, system and engineering perspectives.

The fast-evolving theory and technology development in electronic and information have been reshaping the telecommunication engineering curriculum due to the fundamental problem between the increasingly volume of knowledge and the limited study hours. It is challenging to enhance students' engineering capability in a systematic approach. We have been designing and developing a telecommunication engineering pipeline and carefully design different courses of the curriculum for telecommunication engineering. The "signals and systems" is one of the fundamental theoretical courses in telecommunication engineering. In this paper, we designed and implemented a virtual laboratory system to improve students' hands-on experiences in effectively learning rather abstract concepts, models and methods in signals and systems. This learning system was developed using the LabVIEW and Matlab hybrid programming to reduce the requirement of the programming background for the students. This tool consists of 8 lab modules for the discrete signal processing and the continuous signal processing. We conducted various system testing experiments to evaluate its usability. Using this system, the students are able to design and implement the lab sessions integrated with a visual computing process and a virtual instrument interactive interface. Our pedagogy practice has shown that this system effectively improves the students learning performance, and more importantly inspires the enthusiasm and motivation of the students for the electronic information discipline.

This paper discusses a successful story of introducing High Performance Computing (HPC) concepts in an engineering curriculum over a period of the last 6 academic years at various levels of the undergraduate program. The paper also elaborates about the state of the stake holders and infrastructure available at the initial stage, issues and challenges addressed year after year and the current state of the art scenario in the author's institute. HPC introduction is started with shared and distributed memory programming concepts, added with accelerator programming concepts and enhanced using hybrid programming concepts along with the theoretical concepts. The paper also explains the process of teaching and evaluating the students with respect to HPC concepts. It concludes with the direct and indirect benefits to the institutes' stake holders through the introduction of HPC concepts.

We consider the algebraic and geometric issues of the advanced parallel domain decomposition methods (DDMs) for solving very large non-symmetric systems of linear algebraic equations (SLAEs) that arise in the finite volume or the finite element approximation of the multi-dimensional boundary value problems on the non-structured grids. The main approaches in question for DDM include the balancing decomposition of the grid computational domain into parameterized overlapping or non-overlapping subdomains with different interface conditions on the internal boundaries. Also, we use two different sructures of the contacting the neigbour grid subdomains: with definition or without definition of the node dividers (separators) as the special grid subdomain. The proposed Schwarz parallel additive algorithms are based on the "total-flexible" multi-preconditioned semi-conjugate direction methods in the Krylov block subspaces. The acceleration of two-level iterative processes is provided by means of aggregation, or coarse grid correction, with different orders of basic functions, which realize a low-rank approximation of the original matrix. The auxiliary subsystems in subdomains are solved by direct or by the Krylov iterative methods. The parallel implementation of algorithms is based on hybrid programming with MPI-processes and multi-thread computing for the upper and the low levels of iterations, respectively. We describe some characteristic features of the computational technologies of DDMs that are realized within the framework of the library KRYLOV in the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics, SB RAS, Novosibirsk. The technical requirements for this code are based on the absence of the program constraints on the degree of freedom and on the number of processor units. The conceptions of the creating the unified numerical envirement for DDMs are presented and discussed.

A visualization algorithm was presented for the optimization of geometrical shape matching in the wheel-rail contact system. The algorithm of the subsection cubic spline interpolation was adopted to fit the wheel-rail profiles curves, and curve boundary was got by the finite difference method;furthermore, the wheel-rail contact positions were figured out by computing the roll angles of wheelset iteratively with the dichotomy. Based on MATLAB and Visual C++, the wheel-rail contact geometrical parameters were calculated and visualized, the simulation results show the algorithm has the strong robustness.

In this paper, the system of chemical materials with design of chemical molecular structure images identification is introduced in detail. In order to reduce the algorithm complexity, increase the program execution efficiency, the system is completed based on the hybrid programming of VC++6.0 and MATLAB. The method proposed combines the advantages of VC++ and MATLAB, it shortens the time to write code algorithm, reduces the workload in programming and simultaneously increases the execution efficiency.

The advent of multi-/many-core processors in clusters advocates hybrid parallel programming, which combines Message Passing Interface (MPI) for inter-node parallelism with a shared memory model for on-node parallelism. Compared to the traditional hybrid approach of MPI plus OpenMP, a new, but promising hybrid approach of MPI plus MPI-3 shared-memory extensions (MPI+MPI) is gaining attraction. We describe an algorithmic approach for collective operations (with allgather and broadcast as concrete examples) in the context of hybrid MPI+MPI, so as to minimize memory consumption and memory copies. With this approach, only one memory copy is maintained and shared by on-node processes. This allows the removal of unnecessary on-node copies of replicated data that are required between MPI processes when the collectives are invoked in the context of pure MPI. We compare our approach of collectives for hybrid MPI+MPI and the traditional one for pure MPI, and also have a discussion on the synchronization that is required to guarantee data integrity. The performance of our approach has been validated on a Cray XC40 system (Cray MPI) and NEC cluster (Open MPI), showing that it achieves comparable or better performance for allgather operations. We have further validated our approach with a standard computational kernel, namely distributed matrix multiplication, and a Bayesian Probabilistic Matrix Factorization code.

Aspheric optical components are an indispensable part of modern optics systems. With the development of aspheric optical elements fabrication technique, high-precision figure error test method of aspheric surfaces is a quite urgent issue now. We proposed a digital Moire interferometer technique (DMIT) based on partial compensation principle for aspheric and freeform surface measurement. Different from traditional interferometer, DMIT consists of a real and a virtual interferometer. The virtual interferometer is simulated with Zemax software to perform phase-shifting and alignment. We can get the results by a series of calculation with the real interferogram and virtual interferograms generated by computer. DMIT requires a specific, reliable software system to ensure its normal work. Image acquisition and data processing are two important parts in this system. And it is also a challenge to realize the connection between the real and virtual interferometer. In this paper, we present a software system design for DMIT with friendly user interface and robust data processing features, enabling us to acquire the figure error of the measured asphere. We choose Visual C++ as the software development platform and control the ideal interferometer by using hybrid programming with Zemax. After image acquisition and data transmission, the system calls image processing algorithms written with Matlab to calculate the figure error of the measured asphere. We test the software system experimentally. In the experiment, we realize the measurement of an aspheric surface and prove the feasibility of the software system.

To take full advantage of future HPC systems, hybrid parallelization strategies are required. In a previous work, we demonstrated the Divide and Conquer, D&C, approach for efficient parallelization of finite element methods on unstructured meshes. In this paper we experiment the concept of proto-application as a proxy between computer scientists and application developers on a real industrial use-case. The D&C library has been entirely developed on the proto-application and then validated on the original application. We also ported the D&C library to another fluid dynamic application, AETHER, developed by Dassault Aviation. The results show that the speed-up validated on the proto-application can be reproduced on other full scale applications using similar computational patterns.

Industrial control requirements have been elevated from basic control to an optimal control height. Various advanced control algorithms, such as predictive control, has obtained plenty of approvals in industrial control with its good control effect. Advanced control algorithms are difficult to be used in practical industrial control effectively at present. To solve this problem, a new method is proposed based on mixed programming technique of Matlab and VC++. Taking Siemens S7-300 PLC as the controller, neural network predictive control can be achieved after registering the algorithm's ActiveX in the SCADA software of WinCC. The operation can be detached from the experimental environment of Matlab completely. An experimental verification is conducted in the four tank water system. The results indicate that the method is feasible and effect of control is excellent. Predictive control algorithm, for example, is widely accepted in industrial control with its satisfactory control effect.
