This paper proposes a Unified LZ and hybrid coding (ULHC) method for compound image and video compression. The method is macroblock-based. Each macroblock is first coded simultaneously by both H.264 and gzip, then rate-distortion optimization is used to select either H.264 coding or gzip coding as the final coding of the macroblock. To improve the compression performance of ULHC, gzip uses the most recent 32k bytes of reconstructed macroblock data as the dictionary. Moreover, deblocking is disabled if at least one macroblock in an image is coded by gzip. Experimental results show that for images composed of natural video picture, text, and graphics, the proposed method provides up to 18 dB higher PSNR than H.264, while for text and graphics mixed images, the rate-distortion performance improvement is more significant. Another important feature is that ULHC can achieve partial-lossless and partial-near-lossless coding with a very high compression ratio, typically over 18.

A watermarking scheme combining with hybrid video coding is proposed in this pap er. The intra-coded frame, which is called intra-frame, is blocked and discrete cosine transformed (DCT), watermark is embedded in the low-frequency coefficients in DCT domain. While for the intercoded frame, the blocked motion compensation is discrete cosine transformed as in I frame, then the DC coefficient in the DCT matrix is watermarked. In out scheme, perceptual model is considered, and the spread spectrum technology is borrowed from communication theory when watermark is embedded into the DCT coefficients. The watermark detection is based on the correlation and hypothesis testing, and the union detection of multidimensional watermark improved the performance of watermark detection.

In order to avoid the tedious charges adjustment of the traditional charge simulation method (CSM), and reduce the potential error, the paper proposes the improved charge simulation method (ICSM) on the basis of hybrid coding to calculate the electric field. In the method, it needs to set the number of the matching points more than the simulation charges. The new initial population of genetic algorithm introduces the simulation charges information and constructs hybrid coding and the corresponding genetic operators to obtain the location and charge of the improved simulation charges. Finally, the improved simulation charges information is applied to the calculation of the electric field under the transmission line, which provides a theoretical basis for the optimal calculation of electric field.

The secrecy performance of a source-channel model is studied in the context of lossy source compression over a noisy broadcast channel. The source is causally revealed to the eavesdropper during decoding. The fidelity of the transmission to the legitimate receiver and the secrecy performance at the eavesdropper are both measured by a distortion metric. Two achievability schemes using the technique of hybrid coding are analyzed and compared with an operationally separate source channel coding scheme. A numerical example is provided and the comparison results show that the hybrid coding schemes outperform the operationally separate scheme.

A co-evolutionary algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and ant colony optimization (ACO) is given to solve the bound constrained mixed-integer programming problem (BCMIP). For the specificity of the problem, the hybrid coding includes the real coding and the integer coding. The real coding part is evolved by PSO while the integer coding part is evolved by ACO. The entire population is co-evolved by PSO and ACO. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm is feasible and effective to solve BCMIP. We also obtain satisfactory result to solve MIP when the proposed algorithm is combined with penalty function method.

In traditional coding algorithm, sampling and compressing are used to reduce the utilization of sampling data, without taking into account the visual redundancy of human eyes. Therefore, a hybrid coding algorithm based on wavelet zerotree and fractal is proposed. Firstly, the concept of wavelet zero tree and fractal is explained. According to the gradient formula, the blocks of video image after segmentation are divided into 3 kinds, and the coding of image blocks is transformed into wavelet domain. At the same time, the wavelet coefficients of all the restored wavelet coefficients are transformed to obtain the reconstructed image. The experimental results show that the algorithm enlarges the range of search space, enriches the diversity of coding, and improves the global search ability of the algorithm, which has some application value.

Visual terrain classification can provide crucial and important information for motion control and autonomous navigation for mobile robots in complex terrain environment, becoming an important but challenging task. This paper uses a novel hybrid coding architecture, Deep Filter Banks (DFB), combining stacked denoising sparse autoencoder (SDSAE) and Fisher Vector (FV) for visual terrain classification. Then, we propose a terrain dataset, termed "Terrain8", which is the first publicly available benchmark for visual terrain classification. This dataset contains 2400 terrain images, covering 8 terrain classes with 300 images in each class. Our method achieves superior performance on the Terrain8 dataset. Moreover, we design the framework to deal with terrain videos and carry out the field experiments in arc-legged mobile robot. The field experimental results also indicate the effectiveness of our proposed methods.

The hybrid Wyner-Ziv (WZ) and intra video coding system has many interesting features, like the possibility to perform real motion estimation, at the decoder, and low latency coding. In this letter, we present an improved system and we will generalize it to include the other types of WZ coding. Thus, we propose a new quantization and a new cyclic redundancy check checking technique and, most importantly, we propose many new coding modes to produce a more efficient system that exploits the strong features of each type. The resulting system can thus produce many types of hybrid frames and allows mode adaptive coding. The simulation results show an improvement of the rate-distortion efficiency and can largely outperform those of state of the art.
