The rapid development of online shopping offers new opportunities to the express delivery industry, but also brings enormous challenges due to its characteristics of multi-frequency and small-batch distribution. And the lack of cooperation among express companies in the urban distribution has resulted in uneconomical distribution. In the context of the sharing economy, this paper attempts to solve this problem by implementing joint distribution strategy with sharing the network resources. Based on the customer's time window of receipt, a two-tier vehicle routing optimization model of urban joint distribution considering transfer stations' sharing is established, and a hybrid heuristic algorithm has been designed accordingly. The results of a case study show significant optimization effect by comparing the independent distribution and joint distribution as well as robustness of the designed algorithm.

The integrated optimization problem of multi-level production planning for large and complex discrete manufacturing system was taken as research object in this paper. Firstly, the decision-making process of multi-level distributed production planning in large and complex system was proposed based on system survey. Secondly, the integrated optimization theoretical model of multilevel production planning was formulated by weighted combinatorial optimization method, considering customer satisfaction (quality and delivery), lean manufacturing (bottleneck utilization and cost) as the optimization objective. Finally, augmented lagrangian relaxation method and heuristic algorithm were adopted and a rule-based hybrid algorithm was designed in order to efficiently solve nonlinear inequality constraints combinatorial optimization problems. This study provided a theoretical approach to solve the scientific problem of production planning decision for the large and complex discrete manufacturing system.

A hybrid metaheuristic algorithm for location inventory routing problem with time windows and fuel consumption

We introduce a multi-period location-inventory-routing problem with time windows and fuel consumption, which simultaneously optimizes the location, routing, and inventory decisions for both the distribution center and customers in a multi-echelon supply chain. To better reflect reality, the fuel consumption is also incorporated into the variable transportation cost. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming model. We then propose a two-stage hybrid metaheuristic algorithm to address this problem. In the first stage, a customized genetic algorithm is proposed. In the second stage, a gradient descent algorithm is used to improve the inventory decision to further reduce the total cost. Results of numerical experimentations on generated instances confirm the effectiveness of the algorithm. Results show that inventory management activities contribute considerably to total cost saving. Given the cost trade-off between transportation and inventory, the retailers' inventory level shows more shortages after post-optimization, while the inventory level in the distribution centers can be either reduced or increased, depending on the spatial distribution of retailers in the vicinity of the distribution center. Sensitivity analysis on the model parameters is also conducted to provide managerial insights.

Optimization of a rural bus service integrated with e-commerce deliveries guided by a new sustainable policy in China

Electronic business has expanded, resulting in flourishing rural e-commerce globally, and particularly in China. This paper introduces a novel rural public transit system that integrates passenger and freight services-a rural electric bus service that provides services for passengers and e-commerce packages. This blended service reduces logistical costs and generates additional income for the transit operator. The objective is to minimise cost for the transit user and operator by using a mixed-integer linear programming model that solves bus routing and bus trip scheduling for multiple rural towns;in addition, the model is tested by the Gurobi solver at small-scale instances. The developed solution is a hybrid heuristic algorithm based on adaptive large neighborhood search and tabu search approaches. Finally, a case study in China is conducted to examine the proposed cost-effective methodology and ensure that the integrated scheme will significantly save operational system costs without causing any passenger inconvenience. The research also shows how to optimally design the size of rural electric buses to reduce purchasing and maintenance costs. The optimal results of the case study, comprising 5 towns and 78 villages, show an annual cost saving of approximately yen 847,000 (approximately $121,000) and an annual mileage saving of approximately 66,000 km for the proposed scheme. In addition, the case study explicates key parameters selected for transfer package requirements and the effective deployment of the proposed scheme.

Transit Dynamic Operation Optimization Using Combination of Stop-Skipping Strategy and Local Route Optimization

The efficient operation and intelligent upgrading of public transportation can effectively enhance the attractiveness of conventional public transportation. In order to improve the delicacy management level of bus operations, this study designed a new dynamic optimization model for single-line bus operations with the dual optimization objectives of the lowest passenger travel cost and lowest operation cost, using a combination of the strategy of stop-skipping control and local route optimization. Simulated annealing (SA) was introduced into the genetic algorithm (GA) to design a hybrid heuristic algorithm for model solving. The effectiveness of the optimization model and the hybrid algorithm were verified and evaluated by using the No. 115 bus line in Ganzhou City as an example. The results showed that the proposed optimization model had a good usability, which can effectively improve the average vehicle speed, shorten the overall waiting time of passengers, and enhance the operational efficiency of the line. The hybrid algorithm saw significant improvement in terms of the iteration speed and the quality of the optimal solution compared with the conventional genetic algorithm.

The Industrial Internet of Things is a new ecology formed by the deep integration of the Internet of Things and the industrial environment. Network is one of the core technologies of industrial Internet of things. However, in the face of billions of industrial Internet of Things applications, the traditional network architecture cannot meet the needs of these applications for network resources. Network virtualization technology can effectively solve the above problems by decoupling network services from the underlying network. However, the existing heuristic virtual network embedding algorithm is easy to fall into the local optimum, such as the virtual network embedding algorithm based on particle swarm optimization. Therefore, in order to solve the above problems, a virtual network embedding strategy based on the hybrid whale optimization algorithm is proposed. This strategy can avoid the introduction of the population into the local optimum while reducing the amount of calculation. Secondly, a node importance measurement strategy based on weighted aggregation coefficient and traffic prediction is introduced. This strategy can conduct a more reasonable and effective assessment of the importance of nodes. Thirdly, to reduce resource occupation and improve network security and stability, we propose a multi-node failure recovery strategy. It depends on the construction of candidate nodes and the selection of recovery points. Simulation results show that compared with other algorithms, the proposed algorithm reduces the cost and maintains a high success rate of fault recovery. In addition, its request acceptance rate is twice that of other algorithms.

A novel model and algorithm for designing an eco-oriented demand responsive transit (DRT) system

Since the flexibility and adaptability of demand responsive transit (DRT) give more potentials and spaces of embracing eco-routing strategy, this study develops a novel framework of embedding eco-routing technology into DRT service, in which module of vehicle dynamics and module of fuel consumption/emission are specifically integrated in response to varied traffic conditions and road types when designing of DRT system. To this end, a mix-integer model and the customized DP- based heuristic are proposed to determine eco-oriented DRT routes and schedules. A series of numerical cases based on realistic road networks are designed to unfold the comparison of the performance of eco-oriented DRT against the traditional one. The results demonstrate that introduction of eco-routing is able to significantly reduce the energy consumption and emissions by up to 37% in companying with a slight increase of total travel time and routing distance. The well-developed models and algorithm make the study is ready for real-world applications

Dynamic optimization of emergency resource scheduling in a large-scale maritime oil spill accident

Current maritime emergency logistics studies on oil spills are largely conducted based on static analysis to optimize resource scheduling. This does not suitably address the practical industrial demand, where the oil spill risk in nature dynamically depends on the motion of oil films. To better simulate the reality, this paper aims to conduct a study on a novel dynamic multi-objective location-routing model with split delivery considering practical characteristics, such as the time-varying demands of contaminated areas, uncertainty in the state of associated transportation networks and interrelationship between the changes in spilled oil films and emergency operations, which all result from the dynamic motion of oil films at sea. To address model complexity, we propose a two-stage optimization model, whereby a hybrid heuristic algorithm is developed to obtain Pareto solutions. To demonstrate the proposed model and approaches, a case study involving a series of sensitivity analyses is presented to highlight the importance of the proposed model and determines its implications.

Collaborative multiple centers fresh logistics distribution network optimization with resource sharing and temperature control constraints

Collaboration such as resource sharing among logistics participants (LPs) can effectively increase the efficiency and sustainability of logistics operations, especially in the transportation and distribution of fresh and perishable products that require special infrastructure (e.g., refrigerated trucks/vehicles). This study tackles a collaborative multi-center vehicle routing problem with resource sharing and temperature control constraints (CMCVRP-RSTC). Solving the CMCVRP-RSTC by minimizing the total cost and the number of refrigerated vehicles returns a fresh logistics operational strategy that pinpoints how a multi-center fresh logistics distribution network can be reorganized to highlight potential collaboration opportunities. To find the solution to the CMCVRP-RSTC, we develop a hybrid heuristic algorithm that combines the extended k-means clustering and tabu search non dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (TS-NSGA-II) to search a large solution space. This hybrid heuristic algorithm ensures that the optimal solution is found efficiently through initial solution filtering and the combination of local and global searches. Furthermore, we explore how to motivate individual LPs to collaborate by analyzing the benefits of collaboration to each LP. Using the minimum costs remaining savings method and the strictly monotonic path rule, a cost saving calculation model is proposed to find the best profit allocation scheme where each collaborating LP keeps benefiting from long-term collaboration. An empirical case study of Chongqing City, China indicates the efficiency of our proposed collaborative mechanism and optimization algorithms. Our study will help improve the efficiency of logistics operation significantly and contribute to the development of more intelligent logistics systems and smart cities.

Integrating Optimization of Berth Allocation and Quay Crane Assignment Decision Under Uncertain Situation

It is very important to jointly determine effective berth and quay crane allocation plan in order to make full use of the limited berth and quay crane resource and improve container terminal transportation efficiency. The uncertainty of ship's arrival time and the quantity of loading and unloading, however, will disrupt the execution of the berth and quay crane allocation plan and increase the cost. In order to minimize the total cost of time and position deviation, the optimal model of berth and quay crane allocation is proposed. The combination of SWO algorithm and PGA algorithm is presented to solve the optimization model, because SWO algorithm can effectively reduce the dimension of the solution and can avoid the PGA algorithm to converge to the local optimal solution. The correctness of the model and the validity of the algorithm are verified by numerical analysis.
