Generator Coherency Analysis in ENTSO-E Continental System: Current Status and Ongoing Developments in Italian and Swiss Case

This paper discusses the Generator Coherency Analysis (GCA) in large interconnected power systems such as the ENTSO-E continental system. Once reviewed the state of art about the topic and hence analyzed the available investigation approaches, an overview of some European WAMS activities related to the Italian and Swiss case is briefly presented. Then, the GCA computational framework under debate in ENTSO-E community is described and the measurement-based identification algorithms used are introduced. A real contingency recorded in ENTSO-E continental system is analysed by processing off-line WAMS data, in order to extract useful information for ensuring adequate system security margins. © 2016

Multilayer Epitaxial Graphene on Silicon Carbide: A Stable Working Electrode for Seawater Samples Spiked with Environmental Contaminants

The electrochemical response of multilayer epitaxial graphene electrodes on silicon carbide substrates was studied for use as an electrochemical sensor for seawater samples spiked with environmental contaminants using cyclic square wave voltammetry. Results indicate that these graphene working electrodes are more robust and have lower background current than either screen-printed carbon or edge-plane graphite in seawater. identification algorithms developed using machine learning techniques are described for several heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides, and industrial compounds. Dose-response curves provide a basis for quantitative analysis.

For a class of unstable discrete-time multi-variable switched systems with parametric uncertainty, an identification scheme is developed in this paper. Specifically, the identification algorithm is derived to identify the parameter vectors of potential subsystems based on the idea of least geometric mean squares. Furthermore, an neural network classifier is put forward for partition of the identified subsystems. Finally, feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed identification scheme are verified by numerical simulations, which show that the desirable identification performance is guaranteed with the proposed scheme. © 2015

Estimating Dynamics in Particle Tracking Microscopy Using Nonlinear System identification

A common technique for analyzing certain biophysical phenomena involves “tagging” a feature of interest with a uorescent particle and observing it over time. This technique, known as particle tracking microscopy, typically involves two steps: (1) localization of the particle in space, and (2) estimation of parameters related to a mathematical model of the particle's motion. There exist several methods that accomplish each task independently; however, there is currently no general framework that can perform both tasks simultaneously with arbitrary motion and observation models. In this work, we describe how this can be accomplished through the application of a framework recently developed by Schön, Wills, and Ninness. This framework, which uses the Expectation Maximization algorithm in conjunction with Sequential Monte Carlo methods, can simultaneously localize a particle's location while calculating maximum likelihood estimates of model parameters. Since the precision and computational complexity of this method significantly depend on the number of particles used, we also describe a potentially faster, albeit suboptimal, method based on the assumed normality of the posterior densities. We demonstrate these methods by applying them to the tracking of a nanometer-scale uorescent particle undergoing anisotropic diffusion in a plane. © 2015

Comparison of leakage estimation strategies in a real industrial pipe network

This work addresses the leakage estimation problem for a real industrial network of pipelines and tanks. For this aim, we propose two different approaches that rely on the mass conservation principle. The first method models the leakages as multiplicative faults and applies the recursive least square identification algorithm to identify them. The second approach deals with the leakages as additive faults and relies on PI observers for estimating the leakages. We include performance-based analysis w.r.t fault estimation and fault diagnosis issues. We also study the influence of the non-Gaussianity of real noise of the measurements in the response of the estimations. © 2017

Parametric Methods for identification of Time-Invariant and Time-Varying Joint Stiffness Models

Joint stiffness has been extensively used to study joint biomechanics. It can be described by a block-oriented, nonlinear, parallel-cascade structure under quasi-stationary conditions defined by the joint operating point. The model parameters are modulated dramatically during functional tasks where the joint operating point is varied with time. This paper reviews three parametric methods developed by our laboratory to identify joint stiffness: a refined instrumental variable method for transfer function identification of time-invariant stiffness, a MOESP subspace method for state-space identification of time-invariant stiffness, and a linear parameter varying subspace method for time-varying stiffness. The effectiveness of each method is demonstrated using experimental data recorded during posture and movement. © 2015

A method for the nonparametric estimation of the Frequency Response Function (FRF) was introduced in Hagg et al. (2011) and later called Transient Impulse Response Modeling Method (TRIMM). We present here a slightly improved version of the original method and, more importantly, we thoroughly analyze the method in terms of bias and variance errors. This analysis leads to guidelines for the choice of the design parameters in TRIMM. Our theoretical expressions for the bias and variance errors are validated by simulations which, at the same time, highlight the effect of the design parameters on the performance of the method. Methods for the identification of Time-Varying Hammerstein Systems with Applications to the Study of Dynamic Joint Stiffness

The Hammerstein system provides a good model for the stretch reflex contribution to joint stiffness under quasi-stationary conditions. However, the model parameters change dramatically with the operating point defined by the joint angular position and muscle activation. Both position and activation level undergo large, rapid changes during movement and consequently reflex stiffness will be timevarying. Our laboratory has developed a series of algorithms to identify time-varying Hammerstein systems using approaches involving: large input-output ensembles, multiple short segments, temporal expansion, and linear parameter variation. This paper reviews these methods and evaluates their relative strengths and weaknesses. © 2015

On Arbitrary Fractional System identification in Frequency Domain

An identification algorithm for arbitrary order fractional system is proposed with frequency domain information. According to the frequency domain characteristics of fractional differential operator, the parameters estimation of the arbitrary order fractional system is transformed into a nonlinear equations problem. The variable damping least square method is applied to solve this nonlinear problem. In order to improve the efficiency of the parameters identification, a method to reduce the number of unknown parameters is also investigated. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2015

Optimal Parameter identification for a Hydrodynamic Roll Gap Model in Hot Strip Rolling

When using modern model-based control concepts in a hot strip rolling mill, an accurate prediction of the roll force is crucial for the achieved control accuracy in terms of the strip thickness. Hence, the influence of various process parameters, e.g., lubrication, on the roll force is of central interest. Commonly used roll gap models are based on the slab method and are often not capable of describing these influences. The hydrodynamic roll gap model, however, can capture the influence of varying friction conditions between the strip and the work rolls. Varying friction conditions can be caused, for instance, by lubrication. This paper presents a combination of the hydrodynamic roll gap model with tailored material models for a more accurate prediction of the roll force in a tandem rolling mill. To parametrize the model, an optimization-based identification algorithm is proposed for unknown friction coefficients and material parameters. The identification algorithm is used on measurement data from an industrial hot strip rolling mill. A comparison with a commonly used roll gap model shows that the parametrized hydrodynamic roll gap model predicts the roll force with significantly higher accuracy. © 2018
