This work concerns the characterization of the fiber distribution and mass density of paper samples (extracted from paper sheets) using an optical laser system previously designed and implemented by our research team. To accomplish this task, the developed optical system was used to illuminate the paper samples with laser radiation, by opposite sides, while two image detectors captured images of the retro-diffused and transmitted laser radiation on each side of the paper samples. The captured images were then submitted to several processing routines to enable the assessment of the fiber distribution and mass density. In our experiments, two paper samples extracted from paper sheets of different characteristics were used. In terms of experimental work, the samples were both scanned with the system considering several points dispersed across their entire area, allowing the assessment of both parameters locally (for specific locations of the samples) and globally (considering the samples as a whole).

In this work, two optical systems previously designed and implemented by our research team, were used to enable the surface and bulk inspection of the ink-paper interaction by image analysis. Basically, the first system works by ejecting micro-liter ink drops onto the papers surface while monitoring the event under three different views over time. The second system is used for sectioning the paper samples through their thickness and to simultaneously acquire images of the ink penetration of each section cut. In the performed experiments, three black inks of different brands and a common copy paper were chosen, used, and tested with the two developed optical systems. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were carried out at the surface level and in the bulk of the paper. In terms of conclusions, it was shown that the three tested ink-paper combinations revealed very distinct characteristics.

Segmentation of Ascidian Notochord Cells in DIC Timelapse images

We have developed a method to automatically segment notochord cell boundaries from differential interference contrast (DIC) timelapse images of the elongating ascidian tail. The method is based on a specialized parametric active contour, the network snake, which can be initialized as a network of arbitrary but fixed topology and provides an effective framework for simultaneously segmenting multiple touching cells. Several modifications to the original network snake were necessary for high-quality segmentation, including linear Gaussian derivative filtering to reconstruct edge maps from DIC images and a new energy function to improve the segmentation of critical cell-cell vertices. We find that post-intercalation ascidian notochord cells exhibit two distinct cell behaviors: lateral cell edges expand along the AP axis while showing a rapid pulsatile behavior, whereas anterior and posterior cell edges contract smoothly. Biomolecular image analysis creates new perspectives for scientific communities such as chemists, biophysicists, and computer scientists. Data processing changes our understanding about the manner in which biosensing devices function. This information can be used for biological and medical applications alike. A key challenge in the field of nanoscience is to gain an understanding of conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPEs) aggregation with respect to biomolecules such as DNA and/or proteins. Polymers such as CPE are water-soluble multicomponent molecules that combine semiconductor and light harvesting properties and they have been successfully used for fluorescence sensing. We have developed a software tool capable of reconstructing topological images in sequential fashion to provide precise statistical data about the aggregations and composition of deposited material. Atomic force microscopy has been used to analyze various processes of polymer-DNA formation. In this paper, we present a new approach to image analysis and processing of atomic force microscopy (AFM) data. The software presented is based on multistage thresholding and mathematical morphology methods and can be used for any other topological images.

Field Calibration of Wind Direction Sensor to the True North and Its Application to the Daegwanryung Wind Turbine Test Sites

This paper proposes a field calibration technique for aligning a wind direction sensor to the true north. The proposed technique uses the synchronized measurements of captured images by a camera, and the output voltage of a wind direction sensor. The true wind direction was evaluated through image processing techniques using the captured picture of the sensor with the least square sense. Then, the evaluated true value was compared with the measured output voltage of the sensor. This technique solves the discordance problem of the wind direction sensor in the process of installing meteorological mast. For this proposed technique, some uncertainty analyses are presented and the calibration accuracy is discussed. Finally, the proposed technique was applied to the real meteorological mast at the Daegwanryung test site, and the statistical analysis of the experimental testing estimated the values of stable misalignment and uncertainty level. In a strict sense, it is confirmed that the error range of the misalignment from the exact north could be expected to decrease within the credibility level.

An image processing algorithm for the reversed transformation of rotated microscope images

This paper presents an image processing algorithm for reversed transformation of rock structure images taken with polarizing microscope stage rotations. The algorithm is applied for the analysis of microscope images of Tumlin sandstone. The most important property of the proposed method is that the operation is based on global image information to find the best fit angle and vector. The idea of the algorithm is based on finding the optimal rotation angle and optimal translation vector, thus ensuring the best correspondence between analysed images. The criteria for optimization are formulated on the basis of the shapes of edges located on images. The proposed algorithm can be used as an alternative solution in the case when a rotating polarizer stage is not available. Moreover, the proposed algorithm makes it possible to use matched images for the automatic identification of the rock structures such as grain boundaries, cracks and pores. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Tailoring PET time coincidence window using CT morphological information

In this paper we propose a general method to reduce the electronic time coincidence window in PET, based on a-priori morphological information obtained via a CT scan. A different time coincidence window is assigned to each line of response based on the CT p-map. A minimum and a maximum time-of-flight are computed based on the position of the patient in the field of view, and data are rejected if their time-of-flight is not compatible with the accepted range. This allows us to reduce the random fraction in the data, improving image quality and true data throughput. Experimental results based on phantom and patient studies show a random fraction decrease of about 70% and an image signal to noise improvement between 2% and 7%.

Comparative study of scintillators for PET/CT detectors

A growing interest in the development of dual modality PET/CT scanners prompts the comparative study of numerous scintillators to select the best one, which could be used simultaneously in PET detectors working in the pulsing mode and in the CT detectors working in the current mode. In the comparative measurements, done in the same experimental conditions, various samples of BGO, GSO, GSO:Ce, Zr, LGSO, LSO, LYSO, MLS, LaC13, LaBr3 and CWO scintillators were tested. The measurements covered a determination of the light output, energy resolution, non-proportionality of the light yield, decay times of the light pulses and for the selected crystals their time resolution for 511 keV annihilation quanta. Moreover, a comparative study of afterglow, induced by 60 keV gamma-rays from a strong Am-241 source (13.9 GBq), was done in the second range of time. The LSO-like crystals are the best in the PET scanners application. However, they do not fit to the CT requirements, due to a ig afterglow. The studies conclude that besides of the well known BGO, only GSO:Ce and most likely LaBr3 might be considered for the simultaneous PET/CT detector.

Use of a central positron emitting reference source to improve the timing alignment of a singles list-mode small animal PET scanner

To minimize the system-wide timing resolution of a PET scanner, and hence the applied coincidence window, a delay must be added to the signals from each crystal to compensate for inherent time differences between detectors. Without an absolute time reference, this must be been done iteratively. We propose using a new timing probe, consisting of a Ge-68 source imbedded in a plastic scintillator coupled to a fast PMT, to time-calibrate the MADPET-H small animal PET scanner. The probe provides a precise trigger signal with each positron decay and emission of 511 keV photons and, when placed in the center of the scanner, allows all crystals to be aligned to a common reference. MADPET-H is based on the one-to-one coupling of LSO crystals to APD detectors, each of which is read out by a dedicated electronic channel. Time stamps for each singles event are stored in list-mode format, allowing time offsets to be assigned directly to each detector. Signals from the probe were fed into an Ortec 934 CFD, and the trigger signals were digitised using the MADPET-H data acquisition system. Histograms generated by the time difference between the detection of 511 keV photons in the detectors and the corresponding positron decay in the probe give the time offsets for each crystal. After applying the offsets to the singles data, the system-wide timing resolution of the 256 channel MADPET-H prototype improved from 16.5 ns FWHM to 10.2 ns FWHM (450 keV threshold).

Computing distance from captured images is a common task in image analysis and scene understanding. Distance serves as building block for calculating other geometry information, such as area and volume. Besides directly measuring distance on the spot, it can be computed using projective geometry from scene images. Existing work on distance measurement consider point or line constraints. Since circles are common in daily life, we propose two methods of measuring distance using circles in one captured image. The first method deals with two separate circles, which can be coplanar or in parallel planes. The second one handles two concentric circles on the same plane, which offers higher accuracy than directly solving equations of concentric circles. Both methods are verified by experiments with simulated data and real images.
