An efficient adaptive DCT encoding for the data compression is described. This algorithm is simple and is suitable for digital still cameras. At the bit-rate of 1.2 bits/pixel, a S/N ratio of about 40db was achieved when applied to SIDBA "girl Y". The data of DCT coefficients are compressed by the adaptive run-length coding, in which either of the run-length coding and the non-run-length coding was selected according to the number of zero data in each of the subdivided pictures. By adopting non-linear quantizers the Huffman code table was successfully compressed with very little degradation of images.

The outline of an approach for image data compression using a 2-D lattice predictor is presented. Preliminary results indicate that acceptable quality images (quantised to 15 levels) at information rates, bit rates and signal/noise ratios ranging, respectively, from 1.16 to 1.38 bpp, 1.19 to 1.40 bpp and 20.6 to 22.5 dB have been obtained for lattice stages 1 to 5.

The fully adaptive prediction error coder (FAPEC) is an entropy coder that typically offers better results than the adaptive Rice compressor. It uses basic preprocessing stages such as delta preprocessing, but it can also be combined with a discrete wavelet transform. We describe a new algorithm called hierarchical pixel averaging (HPA). It divides an image into blocks of 16 x 16 pixels, which are subsequently divided into smaller blocks, up to the basic level where one block corresponds to one pixel. Average pixel values are determined for each level from which differential coefficients are extracted. HPA allows the introduction of controlled losses with several quality levels, also allowing to progressively decompress a given image from lower to higher quality. It achieves better resolution in sharp image edges when compared to other lossy algorithms. HPA is based on simple arithmetic operations, allowing a very simple (thus quick) implementation. It does not use any floating-point operations, which is an interesting feature for satellite or embedded data compression. We present a first implementation of HPA and the results obtained on a variety of images, both for the lossless and lossy cases with different quality levels. Wavelet based image compression schemes are under consideration for a future Mars lander. JPEG2000 is favored but the lack of the lander's computing power limits its application. Therefore, schemes to simplify the entropy coding of JPEG2000 are under examination. Applying such schemes will reduce consumption of computing power, but may also degrade the quality of the reconstructed image.

The Consultative Committee for Space data Systems (CCSDS) 122.0 recommendation defines a particular image data compression algorithm for space. It is based on a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) algorithm followed by bit-plane encoder stage (BPE) based on Rice codes. The low complexity and memory efficiency of the algorithm makes it suitable for use onboard a spacecraft. On the other hand, fully adaptive prediction error coder (FAPEC) is a quick entropy coder aimed to achieve excellent compression ratios under almost any situation, including large fractions of outliers in the data and large sample sizes. A new image compression solution based on the DWT stage of the CCSDS 122.0 recommendation is presented, followed by our FAPEC entropy coder, thus removing the BPE stage. The purpose is to obtain a low-complexity algorithm for image compression able to provide similar or even better compression ratios than those obtained using the CCSDS 122.0 recommendation. A prototype of DWTFAPEC, the combination of the DWT stage with FAPEC, is presented here. Its lossless operation, as well as the results with a first lossy option with selectable quality using a wide variety of images, including the official CCSDS 122.0 image corpus as well as several astronomical and ground images, is tested. The results are satisfactory, achieving significantly better compression times. The lossless ratios are very close to those of the standard, while the lossy ratios are higher (for the same level of quality loss). Thus, DWTFAPEC can be used as an alternative to CCSDS 122.0 standard for space missions. c 2013 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

We propose a novel method for simultaneous noise reduction and data compression based on shrinking, quantizing and coding the wavelet packet (WP) coefficients. A dynamic programming and fast pruning algorithm is used to efficiently choose the best basis from the entire library of admissible WP bases, and jointly optimize the bit allocation strategy and the quantization scheme in the rate-distortion framework. Soft-thresholding in the wavelet domain can significantly suppress noise, e.g., the speckles of the synthetic aperture radar images, while maintaining bright reflections for subsequent detection and recognition. Optimal bit allocation, quantization and entropy coding achieve the goal of compression while maintaining the fidelity of the image.

A new method for data compression is presented. The method is based on the use of a dictionary that is called context sensitive dictionary. we discuss a data compression model that uses the context sensitive dictionary. The experimental results of the compression model show that the method using context sensitive dictionary can reduce several kinds of redundancy in data files and approach a higher compression ratio.

In this paper, we evaluate the error resilience of an image data compression IP core, an FPGA-based accelerator of the CCSDS 121.0-B-2 algorithm used to compress the ESA PROBA-3 ASPIICS Coronagraph System Payload image data. We have enhanced a fault injection platform previously proposed for the SEU evaluation of FPGA soft processor cores to interface with the target image data compression IP core and calculate the required for failure analysis image quality metrics. Through an extensive fault injection campaign, we analyze the vulnerability of the image compression core against Single Event Upsets (SEU) in a SRAM FPGA configuration memory. The soft errors are classified and evaluated depending on their effects in the operation of the compression core and the quality of the reconstructed images based on the structural similarity index metric (SSIM). The experimental fault injection results demonstrate error resiliency inherent to the image compression algorithm implementation that can be exploited to tradeoff an acceptable lossless compression performance degradation or a negligible effect on compression fidelity for significant savings in FPGA resource utilization (23% LUTs and 17% FFs) using a selective protection of the compression core modules.
