The specific requirements of spaceborne image compression are outlined. DCT (discrete cosine transform) compression complies well with these requirements. A dedicated design for use in the Huygens-DISR (Descent imager/Spectral Radiometer) camera is presented and compared to the commercial JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) standard. The potential versatility in tailoring the design to specific application profiles is emphasized and illustrated by simulation results.

Digital elevation models will be more and more important concerning the generation of geo information systems. Unfortunately, the consumption of image data is very high. To reduce data transfer time and cost high efficient image data compression techniques are required. LuRaTech is under way developing a wavelet based image data compression software for space applications uses, primarily. The question to be answered is how the individual processing steps of digital elevation modeling are influenced by the quality of image data sources. Very important in this scope is the automatic image matching and photogrammetric adjustment process. In this paper we discuss the automatic impact of losses due to data compression on the photogrammetric evaluation of 3-line scanner imagery coming from the modular optoelectronic multispectral scanner (MOMS-02), which has been flown successfully on the German space shuttle mission D2 in April/May 1993. We look at two methods for the quantification of the impact on parallax measurements. The results focus on the comparison of the automatically extracted interest-operator points, the displacement of objects for different compression levels, comparison of mean values of the quality figure, comparison of correlation value, standard deviation of object displacements, number of conjugate points, mean of maximum of correlation coefficient and the histogram statistics of different images for various compression levels.

In most of the telemedicine applications, the role of image compression techniques is important to deal with the medical images. This will be used for storage and transfer of data over a low bandwidth channel like the Internet by pathologist to a doctor for diagnosis problems of *** a medical image is compressed using methods of lossy compression, the doctor will not be able to perceive any deterioration in quality with respect to the original input image. One of the main disadvantage of the lossy compression algorithms that are commonly used for multimedia applications not for medical image, while the overall quality of the image can be controlled to some extent, in these cases, it is necessary to use lossless compression algorithms, because the compression and decompression of an image is identical to the original image since the information is preserved during the decompression process after image compression the reconstructed image is exact replica of the original image means no information is lost in the coding process. The aim of this paper is to provide a review on various image compression techniques, which is used in medical image compression, performance analysis and compared existing research on medical image compression.

The study deals with possibility of PCA technique (Karhunen - Loeve expansion) application for astronomical data compression. Achievable compression ratio and effects of the ratio on star position measurement are presented. The total amount of 20% KLE spectral components has been determined as a sufficient number for high precision measurement. The course of covariance matrix eigen values analysis has been carried out. Real images from BOOTES experiment have been used as testing signals.

The FORMOSAT-5 is an optical remote sensing satellite with PAN 2m and MS 4m resolution, which is under development by the National Space Organization (NSPO) in Taiwan. The payload consists of one Panchromatic (PAN) band with 12,000 pixels and four Multi-Spectrum (MS) bands with 6000 pixels in the remote sensing instrument. The image data compression method complies with the Consultative Committee for Space data Systems (CCSDS) standards(1,2). The compression ratio can be 1.5 for lossless compression, 3.75 or 7.5 for lossy compression. The Xilinx Virtex-5Q FPGA, XQR5VFX130 is used to achieve near real time compression.

Reduction of blocking effect in DCT-coded images based on a visual perception criterion

Blocking effect constitutes one of the main drawbacks of the actual DCT-based compression methods. We propose in this paper a new block reduction technique;it is based on a space-variant non-linear filtering operation of the blocking artifacts present in the image to be reconstructed. To account for the perceptual importance of the distortion, the amount of smoothing is adapted to the visibility of the blocking effect. A visibility parameter is computed for each artifact using the psychovisual properties of the human visual system (HVS). The postprocessing algorithm is in conformity with actual existing compression standards;it provides a way to greatly reduce the artifacts without degrading high-frequency information of the original image. First the proposed method is described and then experimental results are presented, showing the effectiveness of the correction. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Reconfigurable architecture for real-time image compression on-board satellites

A high-speed image compression architecture with region-of-interest (ROI) support and with flexible access to compressed data based on the Consultative Committee for Space data Systems 122.0-B-1 image data compression standard is presented. Modifications of the standard permit a change of compression parameters and the reorganization of the bit stream after compression. An additional index of the compressed data is created, which renders it possible to locate individual parts of the bit stream. On request, stored images can be reassembled according to the application's needs and as requested by the ground station. Interactive transmission of the compressed data is possible such that overview images can be transmitted first followed by detailed information for the ROI. The architecture was implemented for a Xilinx Virtex-5QV and a single instance is able to compress images at a rate of 200 Mpx/s at a clock frequency of 100 MHz. The design ensures that all parts of the system have a high utilization and parallelism. A Virtex-5QV allows compression of images with a width of up to 4096 px without external memory. The power consumption of the architecture is similar to 4 W. This example is one of the fastest implementations yet reported and sufficient for future high-resolution imaging systems. The Easy Path Wavelet Transform (EPWT),(20) has recently been proposed by one of the authors as a tool for sparse representations of bivariate functions from discrete data, in particular from image data. The EPWT is a locally adaptive wavelet transform. It works along pathways through the array of function values and it exploits the local correlations of the given data in a simple appropriate manner. In this paper, we show that the EPWT leads, for a suitable choice of the pathways, to optimal N-term approximations for piecewise Holder continuous functions with singularities along curves.

The increasing number of radiographic images is a problem in most radiology departments. The problem will be emphasized with the introduction of digital acquisition and storage of radiographs. Changes in image management strategies will therefore become necessary. Such strategies will have great technologic and financial impact and will probably determine the applicability and success of digital radiography. Based on the experience that not all radiographs are equally important and on the assumption that not every image in a radiology archive can be maintained on-line, we investigated the effect of storing only selected, clinically informative radiographs;i.e., clinical data compression. In 165 routine examinations (77 barium enemas, 16 barium meals and 72 urographies) 2433 films were used (14.7 films per examination). We archived only the 461 films (19%) which were considered to be of future informative value. During a one-year follow-up period none of the 1972 removed films was requested. This indicates that a considerable number of films and a considerable amount of image data can be removed from the archive without affecting the clinical work.
