FAST COMPUTATIONAL ALGORITHM FOR TRANSFORM CODING

A transform coding scheme has been widely used in the field of image data compression. A lot of computational power is required for the realtime operation. A new fast computational algorithm, pruned transform coding (PTC), which can reduce the computational complexity compared with the conventional transform coding is proposed. Excellent coding performance is demonstrated through a computer simulation.

Fractal image compression using upper bound on scaling parameter

This paper presents a novel approach to calculate the affine parameters of fractal encoding, in order to reduce its computational complexity. A simple but efficient approximation of the scaling parameter is derived which satisfies all properties necessary to achieve convergence. It allows us to substitute to the costly process of matrix multiplication with a simple division of two numbers. We have also proposed a modified horizontal-vertical (HV) block partitioning scheme, and some new ways to improve the encoding time and decoded quality, over their conventional counterparts. Experiments on standard images show that our approach yields performance similar to the state-of-the-art fractal based image compression methods, in much less time. (c) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, we study the probabilistic distribution properties of a set of medical images. It is shown that the generalized Gaussian function provides a good approximation to the distribution of AP chest radiographs. Based on this result and a goodness-of-fit test, we propose a generalized Gaussian Autoregressive model (GGAR). Its properties and limitations are also discussed. It is expected that the GGAR model will be useful in describing the stochastic characteristics of some classes of medical images and can be used in image data compression and other applications.

The fundamental goal of image data compression is to set an optimal compression ratio while maintaining an acceptable reproduction quality. This study describes the principles of design of image compression system that automatically sets an optimal compression ratio for particular image content by identifying the image compression method while maintaining a tolerable reproduction quality. The proposed image compression system employs subjective and objective criteria for an assessment of the quality of the image compression system. The supervised artificial neural network is used to identify a compression method among different compression techniques by using subjective criterion. An objective criterion is used to determine an optimal compression ratio, which is calculated by using linear regression analysis that establishes analytical expression between a compression ratio, a property of an image and a reconstructed quality of an image. It was proved that the system is an effective tool for medical image compression applications.

A simple and robust thinning algorithm

In this paper a new thinning algorithm is presented. It is simple yet robust, and can maintain the same advantages of other key skeletonization algorithms. In this new algorithm, only a very small set of rules of criteria for deleting pixels is used. It is faster and easier to implement. Its advantages and limitations are discussed and compared with others. Several examples are illustrated.

Block truncation coding (BTC) is a recent technique used in the coding of image data. In the letter a modified technique for BTC coding of image data is presented which is algorithmically simple and hence easy to implement. This new technique uses only the first-order statistical information as `block overhead??. The new algorithm is shown to be optimum in the mean-square sense for a particular class of BTC algorithms. The letter presents the results of using the new algorithm for a typical image and compares the performance with that of the earlier algorithm for the same image.

Newly developed communication-and information networks offer a large number of services which make use of image data, leading to an increasing demand for image storage systems. This paper focuses on a new emerging technology, namely image data compression techniques for digital recording. image coding for storage equipment covers a large variety of systems because the applications differ considerably in nature. In this paper, video coding systems suitable for digital TV and HDTV recording and digital electronic still picture storage are considered. In addition, attention is paid to picture coding for interactive systems, such as the compact-disc interactive system. The relation between the recording system boundary conditions and the applied coding techniques is outlined. The main emphasis is on picture coding techniques for digital consumer recording.

The high-performance computing is necessary for remote sensing image compression to achieve real time output. There are one Panchromatic (PAN) band and four Multi-Spectrum (MS) bands with total 970Mbps data rate in the FORMOSAT-5 Remote Sensing Instrument (RSI). Three Xilinx Virtex 5 FPGAs with external memory are used to perform real time image data compression based on CCSDS 122.0-B-1. Parallel and concurrent handling strategies are used to achieve high-performance computing in the process.

Nowadays, virtual 3D imaging is very commonly used in various domains, i.e. medical imaging or virtual reality. So far these 3D objects are projected to be displayed on 2D visualization systems (i.e. computer monitor or printed paper sheet), by the application itself, a graphic library or a specific hardware. Now, new displaying systems that allow computers to display 3D objects in real 3D appear, often based on the stereo-vision principle, which ultimate evolution is the multi-view auto-stereoscopic system, that displays different images at the same time, visible from different positions by different observers. When the number of images grows and these different images are directly stored, the needed memory becomes very large. This article proposes an algorithm for coding multi-view stereograms with very low quality loss and very fast and simple decoding that allows to calculate all the stereoscopic images with a low need of memory. This algorithm projects the objects on the screen but stores the associated depth of each one. Some of the background voxels are not erased by foreground voxels even if they are projected at the same point of the screen. All those Noxels are sorted in a way that fasten the decoding which is reduced only to few memory copies.
