This paper reviews image processing and pattern recognition techniques, which will be useful to analyze bioimages. Although this paper does not provide their technical details, it will be possible to grasp their main tasks and typical tools to handle the tasks. image processing is a large research area to improve the visibility of an input image and acquire some valuable information from it. As the main tasks of image processing, this paper introduces gray-level transformation, binarization, image filtering, image segmentation, visual object tracking, optical flow and image registration. image pattern recognition is the technique to classify an input image into one of the predefined classes and also has a large research area. This paper overviews its two main modules, that is, feature extraction module and classification module. Throughout the paper, it will be emphasized that bioimage is a very difficult target for even state-of-the-art image processing and pattern recognition techniques due to noises, deformations, etc. This paper is expected to be one tutorial guide to bridge biology and image processing researchers for their further collaboration to tackle such a difficult target.

During the repair of archaeological artifacts broken into pieces, there are positioning problems similar to when putting together a jigsaw puzzle. This study describes a computer-assisted system to conveniently reconstruct archaeological discoveries from fragments. A hybrid method based on a genetic algorithm and a hill-climbing algorithm was proposed and evaluated to rebuild a 3D object. Using the correct patterns as plane images from various camera angles, the proposed method with an improved genetic algorithm was able to regulate the 3D surfaces efficiently. In addition, the user interface, including the functions of design drawing, was constructed to assist in repair work. Further studies and improvements will be required to apply the proposed method and user interface for 3D remodeling to practical applications.

Existing image retrieval frameworks use the low-level visual features extracted from images to learn a set of semantic categories and tend to discard the conceptual properties of these features. In this paper, we propose to use the conceptual information of the low-level image features to establish a correspondence between the image features and a set of high-level semantic categories. In doing so, image objects are indexed using concepts that describe the low-level color, texture, and shape features in a way that reflects the human understanding of their visual properties. Experimentally, we show that using the conceptual information outperforms using the low-level features for indexing and classifying image regions. In the retrieval process, we demonstrate the effectiveness of using the conceptual information in queries to enrich the search process of users by handling non-trivial queries incorporating both the semantic concepts and the conceptual information of the queried semantic concepts.

Although face-to-face communication includes the richest information, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients cannot smoothly communicate with others and express their emotions because of paralyzed muscles. Therefore, the N170 responses of EEG signals were analyzed to detect face stimuli in real time. We also proposed an analytical method for feature extraction of a support vector machine (SVM) classifier with the bag of features scheme to overcome the general difficulty in setting of kernel parameters of SVM. The proposed method resulted in a constantly high accuracy in the face classification;the SVM classifier based on image pattern recognition in the time frequency domain efficiently enables easier setting of the non-linear kernel parameter. Further studies will be required to apply the proposed method for feature extraction to practical devices.

According to the strong interference in performance and the difficulty in register of the multi-color web offset press,this paper uses the anti-interference ability of PLC and rich hardware and software resources of computer, adopting PLC and PC respectively as the on-site slave computer and host computer, at the same time, it uses camera as image acquisition tool. Based on all these above, the paper constructs a new type of register control system of multi-color web offset press. The paper also introduces the compositions of the hardware and software of this system in details. The experiment has improved that the automatic detection, image recognition and automatic calibration of the register marks can be realized by the joint control on image, PLC and configuration software, and it has a strong practical applicability

We propose a framework highlighting symbolic shape concepts based on the characterization of their geometrical properties. Starting from seven basic shapes, we define transformations to generate novel shapes and discuss their organization within a lattice-based structure. These are then automatically assigned a conceptual representation after: i) the extraction of low-level shape features based on Fourier descriptors, ii) the mapping of the low-level features with shape concepts through a support vector matching architecture featuring a radial basis function kernel. Experimentally, we compute the accuracy of the symbolic shape characterization through 5-fold cross validation and demonstrate the effectiveness of the shape concepts for symbolic image retrieval. We indeed show, in a recall-precision evaluation framework, that our approach outperforms a state-of-the-art content-based image retrieval architecture based on query-by-example.

In this paper, a car plate image restoration system is presented, in which the PCA (Principle Component Analysis) based super-resolution method is applied to restore very low resolution car plate images (height < 10 pixels) from mainland China and Hong Kong. Several algorithms are proposed to improve the robustness and performance of this system. The core part of this system is a dynamic PCA algorithm, in which the training set is adjusted adaptively for achieving better restoration results. Extensive experiments on both simulated test images and practical test images show that our system performances satisfactorily in terms of the restoration error rate and the flexibility in practical applications.

An edge based rotation invariant algorithm(EBRI) is suggested to estimate the arbitrary rotation angle between images to be *** on the basic geometric invariants and a way of a voting scheme,rotation angle is estimated by edge points located in the correspondence rings selected. Simulating annealing algorithm is applied as the search strategy. By computer simulations with IRS-C(pan) satellite images as the input images,and SPOT(pan) images as the reference images,the performance of the method proposed is *** is found that the proposed method can significantly improve the success rate of matching for the images with arbitrary rotation, translation and large gray *** method may be used for position estimation of aircraft,and can also be used for object recognition,image retrieval,and motion tracking.

Human face detection with neural networks and the DIRECT algorithm

Based on Rowley's approach, this article proposes a new architecture that uses a specifi c optimization technique, the DIRECT (DIviding RECTangle) algorithm, to improve the effi ciency of face detection in images. The system consists of two main parts: a neural network-based face detection arbitrator, and a search strategy based on an integer-handling DIRECT algorithm. By the architecture, the number of arbitrations is dramatically reduced, and human faces, if they are present in an image, are not restricted to predetermined resolutions and aspect ratios. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture is effi cient in terms of both speed and robustness.
