Extended depth-of-field imaging employing integrated binary phase pupil mask and principal component analysis image fusion

The imaging depth of field (DOF) of white-light illuminated objects is extended by carefully integrating two image-processing techniques, one optical and one digital. The optical technique makes use of a tailored phase mask positioned at the pupil of the imaging system to cause different color channels to have different focal lengths;accordingly, the phase-mask equipped imaging system acquires a high resolution and reasonably focused image in at least one of the three, red, green, blue (RGB), color channels at any location within the specified DOE The digital processing comprises fusing the separate RGB images with an original technique that implements principal component analysis to deliver the overall sharpest grayscale composite image throughout the DOF region. The obtained experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the capability of the integrated technique to extend the DOF. How to make a #theDress

If we completely understand how a phenomenon works, we should be able to produce it ourselves. However, the individual differences in color appearance observed with #theDress seem to be a peculiarity of that photo, and it remains unclear how the proposed mechanisms underlying #theDress can be generalized to other images. Here, we developed a simple algorithm that transforms any image with bicolored objects into an image with the properties of #theDress. We measured the colors perceived in such images and compared them to those perceived in #theDress. Color adjustments confirmed that observers strongly differ in how they perceive the colors of the new images in a similar way as for #theDress. Most importantly, these differences were not unsystematic, but correlated with how observers perceive #theDress. These results imply that the color distribution is sufficient to produce the striking individual differences in color perception originally observed with #theDress-at least as long as the image appears realistic and hence compels the viewer to make assumptions about illuminations and surfaces. Digital x-ray medical image enhancement method based on human visual characteristics

Digital x-ray medical image with human visual characteristics is a kind of medical image formed by x-ray irradiation. Currently, medical image processing algorithm is the main hot topic. With the popularization of medical images in clinical diagnosis and the development of computer technology, the accuracy of clinical diagnosis can be greatly improved using medical image processing technology. For digital x-ray imaging in medical system, it is inevitable that the quality of medical image will be degraded by various factors, so it needs to be processed before they can be used. At the same time, with the development of medical digital x-ray detector technology, the range of medical images used will be much smaller than that of detectors. The medical digital x-ray image data received after detection also need to be processed by an effective image-processing algorithm before display. On the other hand, the research, analysis, and diagnostic use of computer in medical images can appropriately reduce the work intensity of doctors or medical staff, and also play an important role in the discovery of certain diseases. A method of digital x-ray medical image enhancement based on human visual characteristics is studied by analyzing the characteristics of histogram of x-ray image and the maximum entropy fuzzy threshold image enhancement algorithm. The experimental results show that the method can fully recognize the medical x-ray images with incorrect exposure, enhancing the effect of digital x-ray imaging and improving the recognition rate. History and metrology applications of a game-changing technology: digital holography [Invited]

In digital holography (DH), information in the hologram is recorded and stored in digital format in discrete bits. Like its parent, holography, DH evolved over many years with periods of dormancy and revival. Almost abandoned, multiple times, unanticipated events or developments in separate industries revived it with explosive, quantum jumps, making it useful and popular to a wide audience. Although its history has been treated in many papers and books, the field is dynamic and constantly providing new opportunities. Having been born long before low-cost, fast, powerful digital computers and digital detectors were available, DH was confined to the academic world, where practical applications and commercial opportunities were few if any. Consumer demand that led to low-cost personal computers, high-resolution digital cameras, supporting software, and related products changed the situation drastically by providing every potential researcher affordable, powerful hardware and software needed to apply image processing algorithms and move DH to new practical application levels. In this paper, as part of the sixtieth anniversary of off-axis holography, we include a brief introduction to the fundamentals of DH and examine the history and evolution of DH during its periods of rise and fall. We summarize many new emerging techniques, applications, and potential future applications along with additional details for metrological examples from the authors' research. Deep Learning Process and Application for the Detection of Dangerous Goods Passing through Motorway Tunnels

Automated deep learning and data mining algorithms can provide accurate detection, frequency patterns, and predictions of dangerous goods passing through motorways and tunnels. This paper presents a post-processing image detection application and a three-stage deep learning detection algorithm that identifies and records dangerous goods' passage through motorways and tunnels. This tool receives low-resolution input from toll camera images and offers timely information on vehicles carrying dangerous goods. According to the authors' experimentation, the mean accuracy achieved by stage 2 of the proposed algorithm in identifying the ADR plates is close to 96% and 92% of both stages 1 and 2 of the algorithm. In addition, for the successful optical character recognition of the ADR numbers, the algorithm's stage 3 mean accuracy is between 90 and 97%, and overall successful detection and Optical Character Recognition accuracy are close to 94%. Regarding execution time, the proposed algorithm can achieve real-time detection capabilities by processing one image in less than 2.69 s.

Existing feature-based methods for homography estimation require several point correspondences in two images of a planar scene captured from different perspectives. These methods are sensitive to outliers, and their effectiveness depends strongly on the number and accuracy of the specified points. This work presents an iterative method for homography estimation that requires only a single-point correspondence. The homography parameters are estimated by solving a search problem using particle swarm optimization, by maximizing a match score between a projective transformed fragment of the input image using the estimated homography and a matched filter constructed from the reference image, while minimizing the reprojection error. The proposed method can estimate accurately a homography from a single-point correspondence, in contrast to existing methods, which require at least four points. The effectiveness of the proposed method is tested and discussed in terms of objective measures by processing several synthetic and experimental projective transformed images. Wide-band high-resolution synthetic imaging of a segmented large-scaled lightweight diffractive telescope

In this Letter, we report a segmented large-scaled lightweight diffractive telescope testbed newly built in our laboratory. The telescope, consisting of one 710-mm-diameter element in the center surrounded by eight 352-mm-diameter elements and a smaller eyepiece of achromatic lenses, can realize wide-band high-resolution imaging of 0.55-0.65 mu m. The stitching errors are coarsely corrected by adjusting the motion stage mounted on each element. In particular, an optical synthesis system inserted. behind the eyepiece is designed to compensate the residual tip-tilt-piston errors. We present the experimental imaging result of two stitched elements, which is the first successful experimental verification obtained by a practical segmented diffractive telescope to enhance the resolution. Moreover, spatial modulation diversity technology is used to restore the synthetic image so as to improve its quality and contrast. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Goblet cells (GCs) in the conjunctiva are specialized epithelial cells producing mucins on the ocular surface. GCs play important roles in maintaining homeostasis of the ocular surface, and GC dysfunction is associated with various complications including dry eye diseases. Current GC examination methods, which are conjunctival impression cytology and confocal reflection microscopy, have limitations for routine examination. Fluorescence microscopy using moxifloxacin was recently introduced as a non-invasive and high-contrast imaging method, but further development is needed to be used for GC examination. Here we developed a non-invasive high-speed high-contrast GC imaging method, called moxifloxacin based axially swept wide-field fluorescence microscopy (MBAS-WFFM). This method acquired multiple fluorescence images with the axial sweeping of the focal plane to capture moxifloxacin labeled GCs on the tilted conjunctival surface in focus and generated all-in-focus images by combining the acquired images. The imaging field of view and imaging speed were increased to 1.6 mm x 1.6 mm and 30 fps. An image processing method was developed for the analysis of GC density. MBAS-WFFM was applied to alkali burn mouse models and detected GC damage and recovery via longitudinal imaging. MBAS-WFFM could assess the status of GCs rapidly and non-invasively. We anticipate MBAS-WFFM to be a starting point for non-invasive GC examination and the diagnosis of GC associated diseases. For example, MBAS-WFFM could be used to classify dry eye diseases into detail categories for effective treatment. Retinal microvasculature and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) play vital roles in maintaining the health and metabolic activity of the eye. Visualization of these retina structures is essential for pre-clinical studies of vision-robbing diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We have developed a quantitative multi-contrast polarization diversity OCT and angiography (QMC-PD-OCTA) system for imaging and visualizing pigment in the RPE using degree of polarization uniformity (DOPU), along with flow in the retinal capillaries using OCT angiography (OCTA). An adaptive DOPU averaging kernel was developed to increase quantifiable values from visual data, and QMC en face images permit simultaneous visualization of vessel location, depth, melanin region thickness, and mean DOPU values, allowing rapid identification and differentiation of disease symptoms. The retina of five different mice strains were measured in vivo, with results demonstrating potential for pre-clinical studies of retinal disorders.
