The star tracker is one of the most promising attitude measurement devices widely used in spacecraft for its high accuracy. High dynamic performance is becoming its major restriction, and requires immediate focus and promotion. A star image restoration approach based on the motion degradation model of variable angular velocity is proposed in this paper. This method can overcome the problem of energy dispersion and signal to noise ratio (SNR) decrease resulting from the smearing of the star spot, thus preventing failed extraction and decreased star centroid accuracy. Simulations and laboratory experiments are conducted to verify the proposed methods. The restoration results demonstrate that the described method can recover the star spot from a long motion trail to the shape of Gaussian distribution under the conditions of variable angular velocity and long exposure time. The energy of the star spot can be concentrated to ensure high SNR and high position accuracy. These features are crucial to the subsequent star extraction and the whole performance of the star tracker. (C)2014 Optical Society of America

Two historical maps of Cebu City dated 1833 and 1873 were digitized and piecewise linearly transformed to align street maps with current Google Maps of the city. The calculated RMS errors of the transformed maps are established to be comparable with other studies. Disappearance of water basins and river path changes were observed in the current map. Overlaying a flood hazard map on the transformed historical maps reveals a correlation between sites of reclamation and river path changes with current flood prone areas. Old maps can inform land use planners about ancient water ways that can become flooding hazards if improperly managed.

In this paper, we describe a platform that aims to help developers on the construction of embedded AR applications. The infrastructure is based on Field Programmable Gate Array and enables the creation of hardware based AR systems, contributing to high speed processing and low power consumption. In addition, the platform uses a componentized design model, where the steps needed to develop an AR application consist in combining the necessary components. A number of image processing algorithms have been implemented and some AR applications have been created using this infrastructure in order to demonstrate the platform capabilities. The performance obtained with the hardware version (at 100 MHz) of the algorithms has also been compared with their software counterparts (at 2 GHz).

These dimensions were then compared to a nominal value and an error signal was generated based on the measurement deviation from nominal. This error signal was generated by the vision system in the form of a -10Vdc to 10Vdc analog signal proportional to the measurement deviation. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Crown is the apparent part of the dental implant. Detection of crown defects is important for health of the patient before the surgery. In this study, a computer aided detection system developed to analyze tooth dental implant crown digital images to detect defects. The developed system detects various implant defects such as fractures, cracks, dents, spots and roughness. Micro fractures are detected using morphologic operations by the system. Dents and spots are also detected using this imageprocessing techniques. Textural analysis can be performed on digital images to detect different roughness and porosity areas on dental implant. The developed system prevents waste of time and decreases costs. Using the system also will increase patients' satisfaction.

Ultrasound elastography is able to provide a non-invasive measurement of tissue elasticity properties. Shear wave imaging (SWI) technique is a quantitative method for tissue stiffness assessment. However, traditional SWI implementations cannot acquire 2D quantitative images of tissue elasticity distribution. In this study, a new shear wave imaging system is proposed and evaluated. Detailed delineation of hardware and image processing algorithms are presented. Programmable devices are selected to support flexible control of the system and the image processing algorithms. Analytic signal based cross-correlation method and a Radon transform based shear wave speed determination method are proposed with parallel computation ability. Tissue mimicking phantom imaging, and in vitro imaging measurements are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed system. The system has the ability to provide a new choice for quantitative mapping of the tissue elasticity, and has good potential to be implemented into commercial ultrasound scanner.
We propose infrared neural stimulation as an application for end-fire integrated optical beam steering devices. We show some initial results and discuss its implications for the future development of the technique.
