Information graphics, such as graphs and plots, are used in technical documents to convey information to humans and to facilitate greater understanding. Usually, graphics are a key component in a technical document, as they enable the author to convey complex ideas in a simplified visual format. However, in an automatic text recognition system, which are typically used to digitize documents, the ideas conveyed in a graphical format are lost. We contend that the message or extracted information can be used to help better understand the ideas conveyed in the document. In scientific papers, line plots are the most commonly used graphic to represent experimental results in the form of correlation present between values represented on the axes. The contribution of our work is in the series of image processing algorithms that are used to automatically extract relevant information, including text and plot from graphics found in technical documents. We validate the approach by performing the experiments on a dataset of line plots obtained from scientific documents from computer science conference papers and evaluate the variation of a reconstructed curve from the original curve. Our algorithm achieves a classification accuracy of 91 % across the dataset and successfully extracts the axes from 92 % of line plots. Axes label extraction and line curve tracing are performed successfully in about half the line plots as well.

Several studies have demonstrated that polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) can be used to nondestructively measure the severity of subsurface demineralization in enamel and dentin. The reflectivity in the polarization state orthogonal to the initial linear polarization incident on the tissue is low at sound tissues interfaces and high in demineralized areas that strongly scatter and depolarize the light. The purpose of this study was to develop improved algorithms for assessing the depth and severity of demineralization from PS-OCT scans for use with 2D and 3D tomographic images. Subsurface caries-like lesions of increasing depth and severity were produced in adjoining windows on ten bovine enamel samples by exposure to demineralization over periods of 1 to 4 days. Each sample also had a sound window to be used as a control. PS-OCT scans were acquired for each sample and analyzed using various methods to calculate the lesion depth and area. algorithms were developed and used to automatically detect the lesion depth and area, and calculate the volume for improved assessment of lesion severity. Both fixed-depth and automatic edge-finding algorithms were able to detect significant differences between each of the days and sound enamel. The lesion depth and mineral loss were also measured with polarized light microscopy and transverse microradiography after sectioning the teeth. Mean lesion depths ranged from 40 to 100 mu m. This demonstrates the edge-finding algorithm can be used to automatically determine the depth and severity of early lesions for the rapid analysis of PS-OCT images.

Evaluation of the Meibomian glands morphology is becoming a popular assessment for dry eye. This evaluation is usually done by imaging the glands on the everted lids while they are illuminated with infrared light. Nowadays techniques to determine gland condition and dropout are based on grading scales with which meibography images are subjectively evaluated. In this work, we have measured the contrast of Meibomian gland images from ten subjects and for a range of wavelengths of the monochromatic illuminating light. We have used a xenon lamp and a monochromator as a light source, and a semiautomatic image processing technique for measuring the image contrast from 600 nm to 1050 nm. Contrast values inside glands are from 0.025 to 0.015 and between glands from 0.06 to 0.04. The greater values of contrast are obtained when Meibomian glands are illuminated with a wavelength close to 600 nm. Traditionally, optical remote sensing payload design satisfies highly defined specifications arrived at by consensus of the scientific constituency. Designs are constrained by required performance such as resolution, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), and Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR). Payload designers satisfy the specification by performing hardware and cost trades. This process may lack continuous feedback between the performance of the scientific algorithms and the payload design, potentially missing optimal design points. The traditional method has produced separate and specific designs for imagery (over-sampling ratio Q > 0.8) vs. radiometry (Q < 0.8). Radiometers are scientifically precise, with highly accurate scene collection over a tightly defined pixel size exclusive of other scene points, often across several spectral channels. imagers reveal sharper features, but have considerable "bleeding" of scene radiance into adjacent pixels, causing errors in application of multispectral scientific algorithms. Recently, we created end-to-end models that optimize end scientific data products by considering the payload design and data processing algorithms together, rather than simply satisfying a payload specification. In this process, we uncovered optimal payload design points and insights. We explore end-to-end modeling results that show an optimal single converged payload design, and data processing algorithms that produce simultaneous radiometer and imager products. We show how payload design choices for Instantaneous Field of View (IFOV) and Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) maximize SNR for multiple data products, resulting in an optimized design that increases flexibility of space assets. This approach is beneficial as we move towards distributed and fused image systems.

In order to realize the on-line detection and elimination of unqualified can covers, a binary-channel inspection system based on machine vision is proposed in this article. The system mainly consists of two illumination sources, two cameras, two sensors, an IPC, an interface circuit, two eliminating devices, a set of algorithms for image processing and a software for the control of independent binary-channel. In working status, each channel of the system is placed directly above a conveyor, which transports can covers to the detection position so that the camera is triggered, and then an image is captured with a flash. The cover images are transferred to the IPC and then processed by the algorithm that based on template matching and variation model. Depending on the processing results unqualified covers are eliminated. The system is proved to be non-pollution, low-cost, and defects such as double covers, no glue, shoulder scratch, distortion can be detected with a 98.7% accuracy and a speed of 1200 covers per minute.

Previous studies have demonstrated that Polarization Sensitive Optical Coherence Tomography (PS-OCT) can be used to image the remineralization of early artificial caries lesion on smooth enamel surfaces of human and bovine teeth. However, most new dental decay is found in the pits and fissures of the occlusal surfaces of posterior dentition and it is in these high risk areas where the performance of new caries imaging devices need to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that PS-OCT can be used to measure the subsequent remineralization of artificial lesions produced in the pits and fissures of extracted 3(rd) molars. A PS-OCT system operating at 1310-nm was used to acquire polarization resolved images of occlusal surfaces exposed to a demineralizing solution at pH-4.5 followed by a fluoride containing remineralizing solution at pH-7.0 containing 2-ppm fluoride. The integrated reflectivity was calculated to a depth of 200-mu m in the entire lesion area using an automated image processing algorithm. Although a well-defined surface zone was clearly resolved in only a few of the samples that underwent remineralization, the PS-OCT measurements indicated a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the integrated reflectivity between the severity of the lesions that were exposed to the remineralization solution and those that were not. The lesion depth and mineral loss were also measured with polarized light microscopy and transverse microradiography after sectioning the teeth. These results show that PS-OCT can be used to non-destructively monitor the remineralization potential of anti-caries agents in the important pits and fissures of the occlusal surface.

High precision, repeatability, and quality are the three vital requirements in laser welding production. For accurate real-time tracking and inspecting the laser welding process, the high-performance sensors are extremely demanded. Monitored signal reliability can be significantly increased by using high resolution, digital CMOS sensors and high-speed, real-time image processing technologies. This feature presents the latest developments in high-performance optical joint tracking systems and optical inspection systems based on these technologies. Using a coaxially aligned CMOS imaging detector, the optical signals emission of the plasma during CO2 laser welding was studied. The camera images taken from the process were analyzed with image-processing algorithms. Compared with the lateral systems, coaxial arrangement of the camera allows observing the significant process characteristics. Experimental evidence shows that the system can monitor the instability of the keyhole, the gap caused by the welding distortion, and the deviations from the desired welding path. By the image analysis, the spatially distribution intensity of the plasma emission was analyzed, and it can be correlated to the penetration state and the penetration depth. Thus the laser welding process and the weld quality can be evaluated.
