Automated Detection of Beddings From Borehole images: A New Improvement and First Comparative Study

Automatic bedding extraction from borehole images of shale beddings and cross beddings is essential for reducing labor-intensive manual tasks. Three main types of algorithms, including Autodip, random Hough transform (RHT), and pairing algorithm-based detection (PABD), have been proposed in the past decades but have never been directly compared. In this study, we first propose a novel method integrating a heuristic genetic algorithm (Autodip integrate with genetic algorithm, ADGA) to overcome the low efficiency of the Autodip algorithm. This method improves the efficiency by a factor of 3 and even by a factor of 21 with the addition of automatic constraints while maintaining the advantages of high accuracy. Furthermore, to verify the effectiveness of the improved algorithm, all extraction algorithms are compared and analyzed systematically for the first time. The results demonstrate that three algorithms have presented their unique advantages and adaptability. The ADGA has the best stability, extraction accuracy, and image fitness for shale beddings. The PBAD algorithm shows its superiority in cross bedding. The RHT has the best efficiency with moderate stability. In addition, the extraction results produced by RHT are of poor quality for images with high density and low amplitude bedding (less than about 10 pixels) due to the inadequate performance of the structure tensor image processing. This research will significantly promote the future development of automatic bedding extraction algorithms for industrial applications.

Centroid stabilization for laser alignment to corner cubes: designing a matched filter

Automation of image-based alignment of National Ignition Facility high energy laser beams is providing the capability of executing multiple target shots per day. One important alignment is beam centration through the second and third harmonic generating crystals in the final optics assembly (FOA), which employs two retroreflecting corner cubes as centering references for each beam. Beam-to-beam variations and systematic beam changes over time in the FOA corner cube images can lead to a reduction in accuracy as well as increased convergence durations for the template-based position detector. A systematic approach is described that maintains FOA corner cube templates and guarantees stable position estimation. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

This article presents the development of a vision system designed to enhance the autonomous navigation capabilities of robots in complex forest environments. Leveraging RGBD and thermic cameras, specifically the Intel RealSense 435i and FLIR ADK, the system integrates diverse visual sensors with advanced image processing algorithms. This integration enables robots to make real-time decisions, recognize obstacles, and dynamically adjust their trajectories during operation. The article focuses on the architectural aspects of the system, emphasizing the role of sensors and the formulation of algorithms crucial for ensuring safety during robot navigation in challenging forest terrains. Additionally, the article discusses the training of two datasets specifically tailored to forest environments, aiming to evaluate their impact on autonomous navigation. Tests conducted in real forest conditions affirm the effectiveness of the developed vision system. The results underscore the system's pivotal contribution to the autonomous navigation of robots in forest environments.

Vision and Geolocation Data Combination for Precise Human Detection and Tracking in Search and Rescue Operations

In this paper, a study and evaluation of the combination of GPS/GNSS techniques and advanced image processing algorithms for distressed human detection, positioning and tracking, from a fully autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based rescue support system, are presented. In particular, the issue of human detection both on terrestrial and marine environment under several illumination and background conditions, as the human silhouette in water differs significantly from a terrestrial one, is addressed. A robust approach, including an adaptive distressed human detection algorithm running every N input image frames combined with a much faster tracking algorithm, is proposed. Real time or near-real-time distressed human detection rates achieved, using a single, low cost day/night NIR camera mounted onboard a fully autonomous UAV for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. Moreover, the generation of our own dataset, for the image processing algorithms training is also presented. Details about both hardware and software configuration as well as the assessment of the proposed approach performance are fully discussed. Last, a comparison of the proposed approach to other human detection methods used in the literature is presented.

Innovative algorithm to evaluate the capabilities of visual, near infrared, and infrared technologies for the detection of veins for intravenous cannulation

Intravenous cannulation is the process of inserting a cannula into a vein to administrate medication, fluids, or to take blood samples. The process of identification and of locating veins plays an important role during the intravenous cannulation procedure to reduce health care costs and the suffering of patients. This paper compares the three technologies used to assess their suitability and capability for the detection of veins to support the cannulation process. Three types of cameras are used in this study;a visual, an infrared, and a near infrared. The collected images, 103 in total, from the three technologies have been analyzed using a wide range of image processing techniques and compared with identification templates to evaluate the performance of each technology. The results show that the near infrared technology supported by suitable LED illumination is the most effective for the visualization of veins. However, infrared thermography is found to be successful when followed by a cold stimulation. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Hybrid method for speckle noise reduction in digital holography

In digital holography, the inherited speckle noise degrades imaging quality due to the coherent laser source. To overcome this problem, a hybrid method for speckle noise reduction is presented by combining a novel angular diversity approach with the block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) algorithm. A serial of holograms is first captured by the proposed recording approach, and then the image with high signal-to-noise ratio is obtained by averaging multiple reconstructed intensity images. Finally, the residual noise in the averaged image is further eliminated by the BM3D filtering algorithm. The speckle noise is significantly suppressed, and a nearly speckle-free image can be obtained. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. High precision two-step calibration method for the fish-eye camera

Fish-eye cameras are widely used on many occasions due to their ultrawide field of view (about 180 degrees). In this paper, we present a high-precision two-step calibration method to calibrate fish-eye cameras. The two steps are the global polynomial projection model fitting and local line-fitting calibration optimization. In the first step, we obtain the projection model of the fish-eye camera and apply a quartic polynomial to fit the projection model over the entire image. In the second step, the fish-eye image is partitioned into several sections and line fitting is adopted in each section in order to further reduce the residual error of the first calibration step. Experiments show that the new method is able to correct the distortion of the real scene image well. In addition, its average reprojection error is 0.15 pixel better than 0.40 pixel of the general projection model described. The reason that higher calibration precision is obtained is that this method not only considers the global projection model of the fish-eye camera but also considers the local characteristics, such as small tangential distortion and asymmetry. Fringe visibility errors resulting from dual object imaging for stellar interferometers

Practical stellar interferometry for space domain awareness is challenged by the relative motions of orbital objects and telescope arrays that require array phasing using guide stars. Anorbital object's image sensitivity to the location and brightness of the guide star is problematic, possibly resulting in a degraded resolution or loss of image content when both objects fall within the interferometer's field of view. We characterized an orbital object's visibility using visibility contrast to noise ratios (CNR Delta v) as a performance metric for orbital object image quality. Experimental validations included orbital object visibility measurements for dual binary pinholes that were scaled in size and brightness individually to match expected interferometer data collection scenarios. We show agreement in CNR Delta v results, indicating resolvable orbital object signals during periods of collection when signal contributions from both the orbital object and guide star are present. Expanding presented results to imaging interferometers, we discuss how dual object imaging could degrade performance under the scenarios examined. (C) 2021 Optical Society of America

We present an algorithm to process images of reflected Placido rings captured by a commercial videokeratoscope. Raw data are obtained with no Cartesian-to-polar-coordinate conversion, thus avoiding interpolation and associated numerical artifacts. The method provides a characteristic equation for the device and is able to process around 6 times more corneal data than the commercial software. Our proposal allows complete control over the whole process from the capture of corneal images until the computation of curvature radii. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America
