It is very important to measure a grinding wheel surface topography. Therefore a three dimensional measurement system of grinding wheel surface with image processing has been proposed. This system can evaluate a variety of the wheel surface topographies. For example, a histogram of the area or the shape of cutting edges and the distribution map of every shape of cutting edges were obtained. In this paper, a three dimensional model of the cutting edges and a correlation between the state of the wheel surface and grinding mark on the workpiece are reported and the effectiveness is evaluated through an experiment.

A number of techniques have been proposed in the past for automatic quality evaluations of pre–processed tobacco using image processing. Although some studies have aimed to evaluate the quality of processed tobacco. There is no automatic system that is capable of evaluating the processed tobacco. This paper proposes a new method for counting the number of normal FCV tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) as well as foreign elements using machine vision. By proposed method a quality evaluation of processed FCV tobacco can be done which would be very beneficial for the purpose of its quality which is ready to be eat product.

The tetrahedral interpolation method for color space conversion consumes the longest time in the entire color management process. This makes it difficult to implement a purely software-based high-end image processing system. In this study, SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) and GPGPU (General Purpose Graphics processing Unit) based optimizations for tetrahedral interpolation are implemented. To exploit DLP (Data-Level Parallelism) with SIMD extensions, the program is restructured and conditional branches are removed so that inter-pixel parallelism is used for tetrahedron determination, while inter-output-channel parallelism is employed for the table lookup and weighted sum. TLP (Thread-Level Parallelism) is exploited with GPGPU by allocating different input pixels to each thread. Memory access cycle is minimized using constant memory for color lookup table. We conclude that both DLP and TLP optimization is essential for recent multi-core CPUs with wider SIMD registers and reducing the communication overhead between the host and the device is critical for TLP optimization with GPGPUs.

The quality of hot mix asphalt (HMA) is directly related to the quality of the input aggregates and the control of the production process. Many factors such as aggregate gradation and moisture level affect the quality of hot mix asphalt. As state agencies dictate certain standards on quality of the product, some quality assurance techniques have been used in HMA plants. In the current practice, a production sample is taken and analyzed in the lab. The lab analysis takes approximately two hours, making it difficult to quickly correct production mix problems. In this paper, a new online process control of asphalt production system designed to overcome this problem is described. In the proposed system, an image processing system continuously analyzes images of the samples and the required corrective action is taken instantly by a computerized optimization system. In this paper, the simulation model of the proposed online process control system is presented and the results are discussed.

This paper presents an image processing system which is suitable for JPEG2000 FPGA implementation. The system contains a CMOS camera, two FPGA chips, an UART interface and some external memories. In order to verify the system, images captured by the CMOS camera are stored in external memories and then transmitted to PC through the UART interface, the receiver program then captures the data and displays the images on CRT. The Verilog HDL modules of image capture and the UART interface are programmed, simulated and synthesized to FPGA. The receiver program is designed and the image processing system is implemented successfully.

Fault diagnosis of industrial machineries become very much important for improving the quality of the manufacturing as well as for reducing the cost for product testing. In modern manufacturing scenario, a fast and reliable diagnosis system has turned into a challenging issue in the complex industrial environment. In this work, the diagnosis of gearbox is considered as a mean of health monitoring system by used lubricant. The proposed methodology has been performed on the basis of wear particle analysis in gearbox at offline stage. Possible wear characterization has been done by image vision system to interpret into soft computing techniques like fuzzy inference and neural network mechanisms. A programmable real-time system based on DSP and FPGA for the image object tracking is proposed. The high-performance fixed-point DSP TMS320DM643 as kernel processor is suitable for processing video signal. This paper presents in detail the work flow of the solution, the function and principle of components, such as preprocessing and OSD FPGA, the external memory interface, the transport and control of digital video data stream, the module of multi-voltage power supply and monitoring. The experiments and analysis show that peak-value, poid, and correlation tracking algorithms using gray-scale of video sequence could be implemented on the hardware platform in real time.

Dental pulp is located in root canal of tooth. To modem root canal therapy, "Root canal preparation" is the main means to debride dental pulp infection. The shape of root canal will be changed after preparation, so, when assessing the preparation instruments and techniques, the root canal shaping ability especially the apical offset is very important factor. In this paper, a novel digital image processing and measurement system is designed and applied to quantitative analysis of simulated canal shape. By image pretreatment, feature extraction, registration and fusion, the variation of the root canals' characteristics (before and after preparation) can be accurately compared and measured, so as to assess the shaping ability of instrutnents. When the scanning resolution is 1200dpi or higher, the registration and measurement precision of the system can achieve 0.021mm or higher. The performance of the system is tested by a series of simulated root canals and stainless steel K-files.

The constitution, operating principle, hardware and software of adaptive contrast enhancement system based on image processing method is presented. In view of the feature that reconnaissance camera working in different illumination conditions, modified histogram equalization method is introduced. Developed system by this method, can be adaptive to low-contrast image obtained in multiplicate illumination conditions. It can adjust contrast automatically and ameliorate quality of video image from reconnaissance camera. Quality of adjusted image is not debased obviously at least for clear images.

Today, studies on biological systems are often realized acquiring, processing and analyzing 3D-time lapse images. Different structures of the organism can be simultaneously observed by acquiring multi-channel image datasets. In this paper we present a software framework that aims at providing support for managing these kinds of multidimensional images, designing and validating new image processing algorithms, and analyzing processed images through different visualization techniques. We present a real scenario where the framework has been used for the detection and segmentation of biological cell membranes and nuclei imaged from live zebrafish embryos.
