Today, studies on biological systems are often realized acquiring, processing and analyzing 3D-time lapse images. Different structures of the organism can be simultaneously observed by acquiring multi-channel image datasets. In this paper we present a software framework that aims at providing support for managing these kinds of multidimensional images, designing and validating new image processing algorithms, and analyzing processed images through different visualization techniques. We present a real scenario where the framework has been used for the detection and segmentation of biological cell membranes and nuclei imaged from live zebrafish embryos.

Some image processing applications require an image meet a quality metric before processing it. If an image is so degraded that it is difficult or impossible to reconstruct, the input image may be discarded. In this paper, we present a metric that measures the relative sharpness with respect to a reference image frame. The reference frame may be a previous input image or an output frame from the system. The sharpness metric is based on analyzing edges. The assumption of this problem is that input images are similar to each other in terms of observation angle and time.

Some image processing applications require an image to meet a quality metric before performing processing on it. If an image is too degraded such that it is difficult or impossible to reconstruct, the input image may be discarded. When conditions do not exhibit time-invariant image degradations, it is necessary to determine how sharp an image is. In this paper, we present a metric that measures the relative sharpness with respect to a reference image frame. The reference image frame may be a previous input image or even an output frame from the image processor. The sharpness metric is based on analyzing edges. The assumption of this problem is that input images are similar to each other in terms of observation angle and time. Although the input images are similar, it cannot be assumed that all input images are the same, because they are collected at different time samples.

In this study, we report the measurement results of various spatial distributions, such as Sauter diameter, gas holdup ratio, and interface area per unit liquid volume, in a vessel using a real-time, high-speed image processing system developed by ourselves. We attempted to separate liquid side mass transfer coefficients, k(L), from overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients, k(L)a, based on the results mentioned above. And we examined the relations between power consumption per unit volume, P-nu, and both k(L) and k(L)a in order to establish correlation equations of k(L) and k(L)a with P-nu, gas holdup ratio, gas superficial velocity, v(s), and surface tension.

Automatic choosing of image threshold based on greedy genetic algorithm

In this paper, the greedy idea was introduced into the genetic algorithm. With the Otsu method being used as the fitness evaluation function, the greedy genetic algorithm was designed, which combines the local convergent ability of the greedy algorithm with the global exploring ability of the genetic algorithm. Compared with the simple genetic algorithm, the greedy genetic algorithm has stronger optimal searching ability and faster convergence speed. Experiment results indicate that the automatic choosing of image threshold based on the greedy genetic algorithm is fit for the real-time image dealing system.

Morphological features of major submarine landslides of Marmara Sea using multibeam data

Recent bathymetric surveys help us to understand morphological features of the Marmara Sea. Marmara Sea has unique and complex morphological features and active tectonics. In this study, morphologic features of major submarine landslides of the Marmara Sea were studied using advanced visualization and geomatic systems (digital terrain models, DTM;geographic-information systems, GIS;image-processing systems;high-resolution seismic and bathymetric data). The high-angle continental slopes of the Marmara Sea are produced by submarine landslides and slumps, which have potential tsunamis generations. In this study, tectonically active major submarine landslides were investigated in the Marmara Sea. Three of them are observed along the slopes, one is on the Eastern Ridge and the fifth forms the Western Ridge of the Marmara Sea. They are interpreted as rotational and translational slides, debris flows, and mudflows controlled by slope and tectonic activity. On the northern slope of Cmarcik Basin, rotational slide and debris flows, which are activated by faults, affect the current shape of this slope. Hence, we interpret that the present morphology of the slopes of the Marmara Sea may not be only controlled by faults but also the landslides. On the other hand, mudflows in Tekirdag Basin and in the Marmara Sea entrance of Izmit Bay (Cmarcik Basin) may be controlled by slope inclination and sediment supply rather than tectonics. Another mudflow on the Eastern Ridge initiated by the inclination of the ridge by a reverse fault in the northwest side of the ridge, thus, slope inclination controlled by tectonic activity affects the origination of this landslide. One of the largest landslides in the Marmara Sea forms the Western Ridge as a translational slide. Its initial shape has been destroyed by the new rupture of the North Anatolian Fault Zone, thus, it may be one of the oldest submarine landslides of the Marmara Sea.

The study of shaping ability is very important in assessment of instruments and preparation techniques. Using simulated canals in these studies have many advantages such as good standardization, good comparability, transparent et al. A new computer assistant measure system particularly designed for quantitative analysis of the shape of simulated canals is set up and described in this paper. This system can be used in automatic assessment of shaping ability of instruments, by image pretreatment, feature extraction, registration, fusion, and measurement. Comparing the simulated root canal shape before and after instrument in the fused image is good to reduce the errors from vision and enhance the repetition of results. The registration and measurement precision of the system can achieve 0.021 mm or higher, when the resolution of original root canal image is 1200 DPI or higher. The shaping ability of stainless steel K-files is evaluated by the system.

Snakes (Active Contour Models) are powerful model-based image segmentation tools. Although researchers have proven them especially useful in medical image analysis over the past decade, Snakes have remained primarily in the academic world and they have not become widely used in clinical practice or widely available in commercial pack-ages. A number of confusing and specialized variants exist and there has been no standard open-source implementation available. To address this problem, we present a Java Extensible Snakes system (JESS) that is general, portable, and extensible. The system uses Java Swing classes to allow for the rapid development of custom graphical user interfaces (GUI's). It also incorporates the Java Advanced Imaging (JAI) class library. which provide custom image preprocessing, image display and general image I/O. The Snakes algorithm itself is written in a hierarchical fashion. consisting of a general Snake class and several subclasses that span the main variants of Snakes including a new, powerful, robust subdivision-curve Snake. These subclasses can be easily and quickly extended and customized for any specific segmentation and analysis task. We demonstrate the utility of these classes for segmenting various anatomical structures from 2D medical images. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of JESS by using it to rapidly build a prototype semi-automatic sperm analysis system. The JESS software will be made publicly available in early 2005.

We describe the experimental system and some preliminary experimental results for the Micro-OLIVe mission launched in 2002. An important first step in developing an orbital maintenance system (OMS) is to autonomously recognize and rendezvous with a target satellite. The Communications Research Laboratory developed a microprocessor multi-chip module to control the OMS, including a robotic system and image processing system, and installed them on Micro-LabSat for a mission called Micro-OLIVe. The microprocessor and inspection camera using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) C-MOS imaging units exhibited adequate performance, showing the feasibility of using low-cost COTS.

Tools for code optimization and system evaluation of the image processing system PAPRICA-3

This paper presents the complex environment that was built to ease the prototyping of real-time applications on the PAPRICA-3 massively parallel system. Applications are developed in C++ using high level data types and the corresponding Assembly code is automatically created by a code generator. A stochastic code optimizer takes the assembly code and improves it according to a genetic approach;due to the high computational power required by this approach, the stochastic code optimizer was implemented with MPI and runs in parallel on a cluster of workstations. The availability of this complex environment allowed to test the performance of the system and to tune it according to some target applications before the actual development of the hardware. For this purpose a system-level simulator was also built to determine the number of clock cycles required to run a specific segment of code. The whole environment has been used to validate possible solutions for the hardware system and to develop, test, and tune several real-time image processing applications.
