Dermatologists as well as the cosmetical industry are interested in evaluating the mechanical properties of human skin. Many devices have been developed to measure skin's response to mechanical stress. In the presented paper a new approach to quantify the viscoelastic behavior of human skin on mechanical stress is proposed. image processing techniques are used to detect the two-dimensional deformation of the skin in uniaxial tensile tests. The apparatus consists of a computer-controlled stepper motor drive mechanism to extend the skin, a load cell to measure the force exerted on the skin and an optical image processing system to observe the test area. To get the strain state, displacement vector fields are calculated by a method based on local template matching and interpolation algorithms. From the displacement vector fields a strain tensor and the principal strain directions are evaluated. A model built up of springs and dashpots, is used to characterize the stress-strain-time relationships of skin and to obtain a set of parameters, which represent the instantaneous elasticity, the delayed elasticity and the viscosity of skin on loading. The results show the accuracy of the model. The method seems to be useful to investigate the influences of age, test area, cosmetics, etc. on the mechanical properties of human skin in vivo.

High-definition image processing system for FE SEM

A fully digitalized image processing system for field emission SEM (JSM-6340F FE-SEM) was developed. This can eliminate fluctuations in the emission current and avoid the specimen charging by high-speed scanning. The system can display, in real time, images with 1280x1024 pixels on a viewing CRT, allowing direct observation of high-definition SEM images. Using the viewing CRT with 1280x1024 pixels, the same image quality was obtained on photographs and viewing images. An electric circuit has been designed using a field programmable gate array. Therefore, the space occupied by the electric circuit of the imaging system has been reduced to 46% compared with the authors' previous model.

Computational sensor (smart sensor, vision chip in other words) is a very small integrated system, in which processing and sensing are unified an a single VLSI chip. It is designed for a specific targeted application. Research activities of computational sensor are described in this paper. There have been quite a few proposals and implementations in computational sensors. Firstly, their approaches are summarised from several points of view, such as advantage vs. disadvantage, neural vs. functional, architecture, analog vs, digital, local vs. global processing, imaging vs. processing, new processing paradigms. Then, several examples are introduced which are spatial processings, temporal processings, A/D conversions, programmable computational sensors. Finally, the paper is concluded.

A quantification of goldfish behavior by an image processing system

We developed a computer-image processing system to quantitatively score the goldfish behavior. The system was composed of two CCD cameras, set in the upper and side directions of a water tank, two graphics I/O boards (video interface) and an IBM PC/AT compatible computer. From the top and side views through the two CCD cameras, 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional positional coordinates of fish freely moving in an aquarium were acquired over a long period (60 min). A positional distribution histogram of the goldfish was made by measuring the number of coordinates. Goldfish have a tendency to move at the circumference and bottom of a water tank. The velocity of moving goldfish was calculated from the time and distance. The average velocity of goldfish was in the range of 6-36 mm/s. A directional histogram (go straight and turn right or left) of a moving goldfish in an aquarium was made to measure an angle formed by two vectors, which were defined as three (middle to terminal against initial to middle) points in a unitary length (50 mm) of the path of goldfish. Three directions (go straight, right turn and left turn) were quantified as a percentage (59 +/- 12%, 20 +/- 4% and 20 +/- 4%, respectively) of a l-h-event of moving goldfish. This image processing system thus can make an easy and quantifiable behavioral analysis of moving goldfish.

In this paper a new type of shape meter to measure the flatness of hot strip steel at the exit of the finishing mill is introduced. The meter consists of 7x3 laser diodes, a TV camera and an image processing system operated by a 486 microprocessor. The seven groups of three beams incident on the hot strip forming 21 bright spots captured by a CCD camera construct the measuring system. With the help of the detecting model developed by the writers, the values of height and flatness are then obtained. The accuracy of height measurement is identified to be +/- 1mm, The flatness measured on-line by the meter has been calibrated by the Steel Plate Co. Ltd. of Pangang.

High speed sequences allow a subjective assessment of very fast processes and serve as an important basis for the quantative analysis of movements. Computer systems help to acquire, handle, display and store digital image sequences as well as to perform measurement tasks automatically. High speed cameras have been used since several years for safety tests, material testing or production optimization. To get the very high speed of 1000 or more images per second, there have been used mainly 16mm film cameras, which could provide an excellent image resolution and the required time resolution. But up to now, most results have been only judged by viewing. For some special applications like safety tests using crash or high-g sled tests in the automobile industry there have been used image analysing techniques to measure also the characteristic of moving objects inside images. High speed films, shot during the short impact, allow judgement of the dynamic scene. Additionaly they serve as an important basis for the quantitative analysis of the very fast movements. Thus exact values of the velocity and acceleration, the dummies or vehicles are exposed to, can be derived. For analysis of the sequences the positions of signalized points mostly markers, which are fixed by the test engineers before a test-have to be measured frame by frame. The trajectories show the temporal sequence of the test objects and are the base for calibrated diagrams of distance, velocity and acceleration. Today there are replaced more and more 16mm film cameras by electronic high speed cameras. The development of high-speed recording systems is very far advanced and the prices of these systems are more and more comparable to those of traditional film cameras. Also the resolution has been increased very greatly. The new cameras are ''crashproof' and can be used for similar tasks as the 16 mm film cameras at similar sizes. A particle image probe comprising a CCD camera and an image processing system has been developed for on-line monitoring of granule size distribution and shape in a fluidized bed granulation. Continuous granule measurements by the image probe were digitized and processed by the image processing system, and granule size distribution and shape were computed in real time. The developed system was applied to the monitoring of granule growth in pharmaceutical granulation and its validity was confirmed. Application of this system to the dynamic control of granule size and shape was also demonstrated.

Automobile crash tests are filmed in order to demonstrate the resistance of the vehicles and the safety guaranteed to the passengers. The conventional analysis of the high speed films works by manual measurement of specified markers in each frame. In cooperation with the automobile industry the computer system MOTION was designed which automizes all steps necessary for generation of calibrated trajectories. It provides all hardware features for scanning, displaying and storage of image sequences as well as an extensive software package with an user interface adapted to the task. The robustness, accuracy and reproducibility of the evaluated results is achieved by a new developed tracking algorithm based on a special marker type.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF SUPER HIGH-DEFINITION image-processing ON A PARALLEL DSP system

In this paper, we evaluate the sustained performance of the prototype SHD (Super High Definition) image processing system NOVI-II HiPIPE, and discuss the requirements of a real-time SHD image processing system. NOVI-II HiPIPE is a parallel DSP system with 128 PEs (processing Elements), each containing one vector processor, and its peak performance is 15 GFLOPS. The measured performance of this system is at least 100 times higher than that of the Cray-2 (single CPU), but is still insufficient for real-time SHD image coding. When coding SHD moving images at 60 frames per second with the JPEG algorithm, the performance must be at least ten times faster than is now possible with NOVI-II HiPIPE. To extract higher performance from a parallel processing system, the system architecture must be suitable for the implemented process. The advantages of NOVI-II HiPIPE are its mesh network and high performance pipelined vector processor (VP), one of which is installed on each PE. When most basic SHD image coding techniques are implemented on NOVI-II HiPIPE, intercommunication occurs only between directly connected PEs, and its cost is very low. Each VP can efficiently execute vector calculations, which occur frequently in image processing, and they increase the performance of NOVI-II HiPIPE by a factor of from 20 to 100. In order to fur-ther improve the performance, the speed of memory access and bit operations must be increased. The next generation SHD image processing system must be built around the VP, an independent function block which controls memory access, and another block which executes bit operations. To support the input and output of SHD moving images and the inter-frame coding algorithms, the mesh network should be expanded into a 3D-cube.
