Weareverypleasedtopresenttheproceedingsofthe4thInternationalCognitive vision Workshop, held as part of the 6th InternationalConference on computervision Systems on Santorini,Greeceduring May12–15,*** aim of ICVW 2008 was to document the progress of the relatively young ?eld of cognitive computervision, bringing together researchers working and interested in this ?eld and giving them a platform to discuss the results of the di?erent European cognitive vision projects as well as international projects in this area. Original research papers were solicited in all aspects of cognitive vision, targeting the following areas in particular: – Memory: The coupling between visual perception, tasks, knowledge and the ***- grating memory into vision systems include: how to manage representations with limited resources;modelfor attention;integrationofinformationacross representations and time. – Learning and Adaptation: A system whose goal is that of interacting with the real world must be capable of learning from experience and adapting to unexpected changes. Also, there is a need for integration of multiple - sual features to enable generation of stable hypotheses, and for methods for combination of cues in the presence of uncertainty. – Categorization: Research has in particular focused on recall of speci?c - ject instances, events and actions. Whereas recently some progress has been achieved in systems that allow limited recognition of object classes, events and scenes across visual appearance, new methods are needed to enable abstractions and e?ective categorization across variations in color, surface markings, geometry, temporal scenes, context and tasks.

Shape detection techniques are an important aspect of computervision and are used to transform raw image data into the symbolic representations needed for object recognition and location. However, the availability and application of research data relating to shape detection has traditionally been limited by a lack of computational and mathematical skill on the part of the intended end-user. As a result progress in areas such as the automation of visual inspection techniques, where shape detection couls play a pivotal role, has been relatively slow. In this volume, Violet Leavers, an established author and researcher in the field, examines the Hough Transform, a technique which is particularly relevant to industrial applications. By making computational recipes and advice available to the non-specialist, the book aims to popularize the technique, and to provide a bridge between low level computervision tasks and specialist applications. In addition,;assesses practical and theoretical issues which were previously only available in scientific literature in a way which is easily accessible to the non-specialist user.;fills an obvious gap in the existing market. It is an important textbook which will provide postgraduate students with a thorough grounding in the field, and will also be of interest to junior research staff and program designers.

The 2007 IEEE International Workshop on Analysis and Modeling of Faces and Gestures(AMFG)isthethirdworkshopofitstypeorganizedinconjunctionwith ICCV, this time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Our primary goal is to bring together researchersand research groupsto review the status of recognition, analysis and modeling of face, gesture, activity, and behavior; to discuss the challenges that we are facing; and to explore future directions. This year we received 55 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by three program committee members. The whole reviewing process was double blind. However, due to size limit, we were only able to accommodate 22 papers, among which 8 are orals and 14 are posters. The topics covered by these accepted papers include feature representation, 3D face, robust recognition under pose and illumination variations,video-basedface recognition, learning, facial motion analysis, body pose estimation, and sign recognition. A special word of thanks goes to Dr. Feng Zhao, our organizing chair, for his dedication and great e?orts in maintaining both the online submission system and workshop website and in handling most of the author contacts. We are indebted to the advisory committee members for their valuable suggestions and to the program committee members for their hard work and timely reviews. Finally, we thank Cognitec System GmbH and Siemens Corporate Research for their sponsorship. October 2007 S. The pervasive creation and consumption of content, especially visual content, is ingrained into our modern world. We’re constantly consuming visual media content, in printed form and in digital form, in work and in leisure pursuits. Like our cave– man forefathers, we use pictures to record things which are of importance to us as memory cues for the future, but nowadays we also use pictures and images to document processes; we use them in engineering, in art, in science, in medicine, in entertainment and we also use images in advertising. Moreover, when images are in digital format, either scanned from an analogue format or more often than not born digital, we can use the power of our computing and networking to exploit images to great effect. Most of the technical problems associated with creating, compressing, storing, transmitting, rendering and protecting image data are already solved. We use - cepted standards and have tremendous infrastructure and the only outstanding ch- lenges, apart from managing the scale issues associated with growth, are to do with locating images. That involves analysing them to determine their content, clas- fying them into related groupings, and searching for images. To overcome these challenges we currently rely on image metadata, the description of the images, - ther captured automatically at creation time or manually added afterwards.
