image recognition technology in Smart Agriculture: A Review of Current Applications Challenges and Future Prospects

The implementation of image recognition technology can significantly enhance the levels of automation and intelligence in smart agriculture. However, most researchers focused on its applications in medical imaging, industry, and transportation, while fewer focused on smart agriculture. Based on this, this study aims to contribute to the comprehensive understanding of the application of image recognition technology in smart agriculture by investigating the scientific literature related to this technology in the last few years. We discussed and analyzed the applications of plant disease and pest detection, crop species identification, crop yield prediction, and quality assessment. Then, we made a brief introduction to its applications in soil testing and nutrient management, as well as in agricultural machinery operation quality assessment and agricultural product grading. At last, the challenges and the emerging trends of image recognition technology were summarized. The results indicated that the models used in image recognition technology face challenges such as limited generalization, real-time processing, and insufficient dataset diversity. Transfer learning and green Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer promising solutions to these issues by reducing the reliance on large datasets and minimizing computational resource consumption. Advanced technologies like transformers further enhance the adaptability and accuracy of image recognition in smart agriculture. This comprehensive review provides valuable information on the current state of image recognition technology in smart agriculture and prospective future opportunities.

With the rapid progress of image processing technology, image recognition technology has become an indispensable part of artificial intelligence. At the same time, this technology is also widely used in various fields of agriculture, providing great help for agricultural production. This article explains the basic principles of image recognition technology and discusses its practical applications in pest and disease control, crop weed control, and intelligent agricultural machinery. Additionally, image recognition technology in the agricultural field also faces many challenges, such as the lack of lightweight image recognition models, the lack of comprehensive agrarian image databases, and the low recognition accuracy caused by the complex operating environment. Addressing these challenges will require significant advancements. In the future, it will be possible to build lighter equipment, enhance image databases, and improve identification accuracy in complex environments. Moreover, integrating machine learning and IoT with image recognition can further optimize agricultural practices, making them more efficient and sustainable. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

Reflection Prediction of Black Silicon Texture Under the Guidance of image recognition technology

Black silicon texturing has been considered to be a promising wafer texturing technology and can effectively improve the short-circuit current and, thus, power conversion efficiency, which has been widely used in the multicrystalline silicon photovoltaic industry. In this article, we propose a new method to "recognize" the black silicon morphology from the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and to predict the resultant reflectance. imageJ software was applied to recognize and analyze the SEM images for the first time, to obtain the acid-etched pit parameters. Then, we applied the recognized parameters into the sigmoid-Boltzmann equation to obtain an accurate distribution of the pit size. Finally, a modified model has been established to describe the exponential relations between the reflectance and the ratio of pit depth d over wavelength lambda (d/lambda), pit size, and pit coverage proportion. For the typical pit size 500-800 nm in mass production, its depth is about half of the wavelength lambda. Thus, we can predict the reflectance of the black silicon surface precisely, by monitoring their SEM images. The average reflectance deviation between the measured and the predicted reflectance is similar to 3.7% relatively.

Driven by global educational reforms, interdisciplinary learning has become a key approach to cultivating well-rounded, innovative talent. However, effectively assessing students' adaptability in interdisciplinary learning environments remains a significant challenge in educational research. With the rapid development of image recognition technology, behavior-based intelligent analysis offers new opportunities for adaptability assessment by capturing students' behavioral performance in real-time and dynamically. Traditional approaches, such as surveys and interviews, are limited by subjectivity and inefficiency, making them insufficient for the precise, real-time analysis required in interdisciplinary settings. This study defines the key behavioral indicators of adaptability in interdisciplinary learning environments, develops an algorithm for detecting student behavior, and evaluates adaptability based on the detected results. An intelligent evaluation system is constructed to provide educators with objective data support, thereby enhancing teaching effectiveness and optimizing interdisciplinary learning environments.

Speech is easily affected by different background noise in real environment to reduce the speech intelligibility, in particular, for hearing impaired listeners. In order to improve the above issue, several hearing aids have been developed to enhance the speech signal in noisy environment. Most of current hearing aids were designed to enhance the component of speech and suppress the component of noise. However, it is difficult to separate other speech sources. Adaptive signal enhancement with the beamforming technique might improve the above issue. However, how to distinguish the location of the desired speaker effectively is still a difficult challenge for adaptive beamforming method. A novel concept of hearing aid was proposed in this study. Different from the beamforming-based hearing aids, which use the cross-correlation-coefficient method to estimate time difference of arrival (TDOA), an image recognition technology was used to estimate the location of the desired speaker to obtain the more precise TDOA. An adaptive signal enhancement was also used to enhance the noisy speech sound. From the experimental results, the proposed system could provide a smaller absolute error of TDOA less than 1.25 x 10(-4) ms, and a clear speech sound from the target speaker who the user wants to listen to.
