Automated deep learning system for power line inspection image analysis and processing: architecture and design issues

The continuous growth in the scale of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications in transmission line inspection has resulted in a corresponding increase in the demand for UAV inspection image processing. Owing to its excellent performance in computer vision, deep learning has been applied to UAV inspection image processing tasks such as power line identification and insulator defect detection. Despite their excellent performance, electric power UAV inspection image processing models based on deep learning face several problems such as a small application scope, the need for constant retraining and optimization, and high R&D monetary and time costs due to the black-box and scene data-driven characteristics of deep learning. In this study, an automated deep learning system for electric power UAV inspection image analysis and processing is proposed as a solution to the aforementioned problems. This system design is based on the three critical design principles of generalizability, extensibility, and automation. Pre-trained models, fine-tuning (downstream task adaptation), and automated machine learning, which are closely related to these design principles, are reviewed. In addition, an automated deep learning system architecture for electric power UAV inspection image analysis and processing is presented. A prototype system was constructed and experiments were conducted on the two electric power UAV inspection image analysis and processing tasks of insulator self-detonation and bird nest recognition. The models constructed using the prototype system achieved 91.36% and 86.13% mAP for insulator self-detonation and bird nest recognition, respectively. This demonstrates that the system design concept is reasonable and the system architecture feasible .

Computer tomography (CT), combined with advanced image processing techniques, can be used to visualize the complex internal structures of living and non-living media in a non-destructive, intuitive, and precise manner in both two and three-dimensional spaces. Beyond its clinical uses, CT has been extensively employed within the field of geotechnical engineering to provide both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the microstructural properties of loess. This technology has been successfully applied in many fields. However, with the rapid development of CT technology and the expansion of its application scope, a reassessment is necessary. In recent years, only a few documents have attempted to organize and review the application cases of CT in the field of loess microstructure research. Therefore, the objectives of this work are as follows: (1) to briefly introduce the development process of CT equipment and the basic principles of CT and image processing;(2) to determine the current state and hotspots of CT technology research based on a bibliometric analysis of the literature from the past three decades in the Web of Science Core Collection and CNKI databases;and (3) to comprehensively review the application of CT to explore the microstructural characteristics (such as particle size, shape, arrangement, and the connectivity, orientation, and pore throats of pores, etc.) and the evolution of structural damage in loess within geotechnical science. In addition, the progress and deficiencies of CT applications in the field of loess microstructure are summarized, and future prospects are proposed.

Field Ground Truthing Data Collector is one of the four key components of the NASA funded ICCaRS project, being developed in Southeast Michigan. The ICCaRS ground truthing toolkit entertains comprehensive functions: 1) Field functions, including determining locations through GPS, gathering and geo-referencing visual data, laying out ground control points for AEROKAT flights, measuring the flight distance and height, and entering observations of land cover (and use) and health conditions of ecosystems and environments in the vicinity of the flight field;2) Server synchronization functions, such as, downloading study-area maps, aerial photos and satellite images, uploading and synchronizing field-collected data with the distributed databases, calling the geospatial web services on the server side to conduct spatial querying, image analysis and processing, and receiving the processed results in field for near-real-time validation;and 3) Social network communication functions for direct technical assistance and pedagogical support, e.g., having video-conference calls in field with the supporting educators, scientists, and technologists, participating in Webinars, or engaging discussions with other-learning portals. This customized software package is being built on Apple iPhone/iPad and Google Maps/Earth. The technical infrastructures, data models, coupling methods between distributed geospatial data processing and field data collector tools, remote communication interfaces, coding schema, and functional flow charts will be illustrated and explained at the presentation. A pilot case study will be also demonstrated.

Research on Chip Defect System based on Machine Vision

At present, machine vision based defect detection is a hot research channel to realize automatic defect detection technology. Based on the ultra thin Gigabyte single port network transformer chip product as the carrier, the paper puts forward a system research on the automatic defect detection technology based on machine vision to eliminate and sort the defective chip products in the manufacturing process. The research focuses on the development of a set of high efficiency, precision, stable ultrathin single port network transformer chip automatic defect detection platform. The research content mainly focuses on the design of detection platform, vision system setting, image analysis and processing, and control system implementation. The results show that the accuracy of defect detection is 95%, and the detection efficiency is 38% higher than that of manual testing, which meets the research expectation.

Samples of triticale seeds of various qualities were assessed in the study. The seeds were obtained during experiments, reflecting the actual sowing conditions. The experiments were conducted on an original test facility designed by the authors of this study. The speed of the air (15, 20, 25 m/s) transporting seeds in the pneumatic conduit was adjusted to sowing. The resulting graphic database enabled the distinction of six classes of seeds according to their quality and sowing speed. The database was prepared to build training, validation and test sets. The neural model generation process was based on multi-layer perceptron networks (MLPN) and statistical (machine training). When the MLPN was used to identify contaminants in seeds sown at a speed of 15 m/s, the lowest RMS error of 0.052 was noted, whereas the classification correctness coefficient amounted to 0.99.

First of all, Tesseract OCR technology is used to automatically identify English words on the picture, including English words in the horizontal direction, vertical direction and a certain tilt Angle direction on the picture. Then, the automatic translation system is used to translate English words into Chinese words. Finally, OpenCV technology is used to automatically fill the translated Chinese words into the corresponding position in the English of the original picture, replace the original English words, and realize the automatic recognition and translation of foreign words in the picture. This research greatly improves the efficiency of machine translation. The research content of the project can also be applied to the automatic translation of images between any other languages.

In this paper an optical triangulation system is used to perform the three-dimensional surface reconstruction of different textile fabrics for an objective evaluation of wrinkling. The system works by projecting a light stripe onto the surface of the fabric samples and according to the amount of wrinkling exhibited on them, the light stripe will suffer larger or smaller deviations. By moving the fabric samples relatively to the light stripe, a complete scan of the fabrics is achieved. This process leads then to the creation of 3D images of the fabrics on which it is possible to distinguish their topographic differences. With the collected data of the fabrics, it is also possible to calculate several parameters to evaluate the wrinkling quantitatively. As expected, both analyses considered in the current work are completely in agreement with the reference grades of the subjective wrinkling evaluation method.

This work addresses the assessment of the anisotropy and orientation of the fiber distribution, at the surfaces and in the bulk of the paper sheet, using an optical system that works by laser scanning. In our experiments, the two parameters (anisotropy and orientation) were evaluated at a sub-millimeter level for five paper samples of different characteristics. As expected, the results that were obtained with the system were in agreement with the corresponding fiber distribution characteristics of each paper sample. Furthermore, the obtained results at the surfaces and in the bulk of the paper samples were also in agreement to each other having shown similar values for each analyzed sample. In terms of assessment, the implemented system offers the possibility of analyzing the paper samples by three different ways: image analysis, numerically, and through color graphical representations allowing a very complete analysis of the samples. The implemented system shows, therefore, to have potential to be used as a quality control tool to perform this kind of testing, and it is planned to be further explored for the study of the fiber distribution in the paper structure.

This work addresses the study of repeatability of an optical laser system, previously implemented by our research team, for characterization of the fiber distribution and mass density of two paper samples with different characteristics. In the experiment that has been carried out in the current work, both paper samples were laser scanned by the system on a total of 16 times (4 times per day in 4 different days). The data acquired and registered during the experimental work, associated to both tested samples, were then processed and the obtained results showed that the optical system is precise.

In this work is presented and described an optical system specifically designed and implemented to be applied for the study of the ink-paper interaction at the paper surface, considering the two main directions of the paper sheet (machine and cross directions). This work is particularly concerned with the system description, complete characterization, test, and its usage under real conditions. Concerning the system characterization, the main parameters were addressed and set having in mind its optimization. Relatively to the test of the system, several measurements using specific object samples with known dimensions were carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the obtained results. In terms of its usage under real conditions, an experiment was carried out using a commercial ink and common copy paper to dynamically collect data of its interaction. The collected data, after processing, enabled the determination of the main results of the analyzed ink-paper interaction, which allowed to reach the following conclusions;(1) the implemented system offers two different analysis approaches (qualitative and quantitative), both showing to be in agreement;and (2) the system also shows to be important to identify variations of the ink-paper interaction, manifested in the machine and cross directions of the paper.
